This is a Hip Hop album, complete with the wondrous elements consistent with a broader musical appreciation. And it just might be 9th Wonder's best yet.

It’s a bit ironic to hear 9th Wonder distance himself from the burden of describing his own legacy in the opening monologue of his third official solo album, The Wonder Years. “I don’t think we define our own legacy,” he states plainly. “When you leave the game or you leave this Earth, people will decide the legacy for you.”

The Grammy winning producer sounds earnest, unabashedly humble almost. Then his quintessential snare hops in on “Make It Big” (featuring Khrysis) and that beautifully chopped soul sample bounces perfectly all over the place. Then on the opening bar, a rapping “Ninth Wondra” shares how he really feels: “Mattic now one of the best / Who wanna test?” before detailing seemingly every step along his rise to acclaim - 6th grade, Jay-Z’s “Threats,” his work with Ludacris and Destiny’s Child. It’s more than a great song; it’s a statement.

“They say that boy’s back / Nigga this is blackboard rap / You go and chalk it up to a loss,” raps Phonte on “Band Practice,” (also featuring Median) seamlessly reuniting with his Little Brother producer, sounding as if they never disbanded. “I know you’re probably used to dudes who lie a lot / Take you to the mall, trick some doe, they buy a lot / Saying they taking you to a higher spot / But steady be getting they browse on like Chrome or Firefox,” Tay raps nine tracks later on “One Night,” a groovy, two step ready jam loaded with crashing snares and subtle horns. 9th Wonder’s production has always espoused the best of boom-bap rap. But jazzed out extended breaks like the one on the Terrace Martin and Talib Kweli assisted “Never Stop Loving You” or “Peanut Butter & Jelly” with Marsha Ambrosius or the sultry, uplifting “20 Feet Tall” (featuring Rhapsody and Erykah Badu) live in a space much broader than Hip Hop. It’s impressive, even as a background listen.

Warren G, Murs and Kendrick Lamar add appreciated West Coast stylings on “Enjoy.” Skyzoo, Fashawn and King Mez all come rhyme tight on “Hearing The Melody.” Raekwon drops a truly inspired verse on “No Pretending” and Mela Machinko’s soulful vocals on “Now I’m Being Cool” are enough to hope a 9th produced solo album is on the horizon. From mic to plug, The Wonder Years flows consistently lovely, even with a sporadic score of singers and emcees from across the musical divide stopping by to show skills.

9th Wonder makes a solid point in that opening monologue: defining his legacy isn’t his responsibility. And the legacy of his career and this album will undoubtably be hashed out at the pleasure of fans and rap critics. At an hour in length, The Wonder Years is long, but doesn’t feel like it. A handful of filler tracks like “That’s Love” (featuring Mac Miller and Heather Victoria) and “Your Smile” (with Holly Weerd & Thee Tom Hardy) still fit the project’s overall feel, never encroaching on replay value -- the truest testament of a quality LP.

If there was ever a shred of incredulity concerning the stature of 9th’s legacy, even by 9th himself, The Wonder Years serves as a seismic rebuttal. This is a Hip Hop album, complete with the wondrous elements consistent with a broader musical appreciation. And it just might be 9th Wonder’s best yet.

mac miller?what the fuck is a mac miller.section80 is a hiphop classic.read the review on djbooth.net where its called "hiphop scripture"..not some hipster watered down dog shit

    • jg

fuck you man, this is best release of the fuckin year. Secone place goes to either mac miller or phonte

  • Lacsap

I own 9th's, Phonte's and J. Cole's albums and let me tell you that Phonte's just barely edges out this LP. But that's certainly no knock on 9th's effort here. I LOVE this album and I have yet to skip a track since I've been banging it all day. I've had it on repeat. The songs, guest artists and styles of production never allow for a boring moment. Phonte's album just pips this effort because he finally came into his own as a solo rap artist and some on the tracks on that are FIRE! It also probably helps that I've been a Little Brother fan since the Listening and have been dying to hear a Phonte album. I love J. Cole as well (since the come up, warm up and friday night lights) but as great as his rhymes were, his album was lacking. It just felt like a minor disappointment. Maybe it's the beats. Or maybe it's the fact that at least 3 of the songs were on previous mixtapes. In any event, Cole's release was the weakest of the albums I mentioned (though still a good album). Phonte>9th Wonder>J. Cole...'nuff said! I'm looking forward to hearing the new Evidence joint, too.

    • hotshot

Cole World was...average. Thats it. No bangers, no timeless tracks you will be bumping years from now. That is the difference between CW and Wonder Years.Almost every track o this album has a memorable theme and that results in infinite replay value. JCOle and Mac Miller spit with the same sloppy kind of drawl but I gotta say Mac goes in way harder and I love his creativity. Jcole is just a generic hiphop clone

  • BeatWiz

This Nicca StoLE My Idea I uz gonna name my Album The Woda Years. Itz Coo He jus owe me some $$ thats all. I make beats using DUBTurbo. • OhREZ!

    Incredibly Blissful Hip Hop

  • mr. tibbs

This was another one of those this shit should have been raw.er situations. I think Im too hard on 9th because of his classic LB background and this project was looong over do. So for what it is, its a good listen until you listen to Phonte's shit then you just like just give me another little brother lp 9th.

  • 9th wonder is a disgruntled peasant

This watch the throne hater....gonna give him five stars coz his album was good and he definitively ain't selling much so at least he will get a high rating!

    • jg

i am a kanye fan too. But watch the throne was like 5 steps down from MDBTF

    • 9th wonder is a disgruntled peasant

ey man i loved watch the throne the second it came out because like a true fan of kanye i tried to get their message before judging it.. I did not act like a fake fan and tried to over hype it to bring it down... I didn't like 9th wonder's comments on the album because i think his comments were personally driven and he didn't give the album a chance (hater in other words). but his album is good is good i fuks wit it!

    • Donnie Wesley

So, what you're saying is that you're a disgruntled peasant as well...Got It!!! Second, like I said in another topic; 9th made the mistake most people made and are still making when it came to taking first listen to Watch The Throne...But, if you give that album some more listening to, you will see that it is a great album.

  • Jenny

The Company Man's reviews are always on point.

  • Shame

Evidence album was better, all these people could have stepped it up. Just because there Dope artists doesn't mean they always produce Dope music. 3 or a 3.5 shoulda been the rating

    • Donnie Wesley

I actually gave it 4-star rating, because, of the star-rating system...1-star being garbage, 2-star being garbage, but, has potential, 3-star being average with no potential, 4-star being very good, but, still no classic, and 5-star being a classic....I actually think that real hip-hop fans should stop judging real hip-hop...It's a waste and if evidence album was the best, then, you should go ahead and crown alchemist as having the best real-hiphop album of the year...Yes, his beats are similar to alchemist, but, still good beats...That's as far as I go with the album!

  • Muz

Above average, gr8 work from 9th, wonder yaers beyby!!

  • Anonymous

going to cop this dope album

  • obatron-one

Oh well if Pooh is absent at least Phonte & Median are bringing back that early LB/Justice League feeling. As much as I want to see LB reunite I'll take Median/Tay over a 9th track anyday.

  • Donnie Wesley

HONESTLY PEOPLE, SEPT.27TH WAS THE BEST DAY OF THE YEAR...HANDS DOWN!!!

  • Donnie Wesley

This album definitely deserves a 4-rating...Some of the production leaves you scratching your head, but, then some of the production have you uttering...That's why they call him 9th Wonder!!!! Funny thing is that 9th wonder headed two albums on the same day and both are 4-star rated!!!!

  • msva

I'm a big fan of 9th, and LB. The Wonder years was pretty good, but was it what I was expecting, no. I wanted to love it, but ended up just liking it. I was feeling the Phonte joint a little bit more. Those who have heard both probably do not want to compare the two, but its hard not too.

    • Donnie Wesley

Actually, it's not hard at all...Phonte gets a slight-edge!!! But, who really cares...EVERYBODY ON THIS SITE AND AROUND THE WORLD KNOWS THAT 9TH ISN'T GOING TO START MAKING LIL'WAYNE BEATS....9th stays consistent and while further exploring...9th is here to stay, Phonte is here to stay, J-Cole is here to stay, and Evidence is here to stay....I said all four because of the debates across many boards!!!!

  • starky love

album is DOPE. 9th is dope son all the beats are tight. First 8 tracks are crazy. and the rae song is crazy too. good review but do the phonte review already. 9th kills the boards on that shit too

  • Anonymous

th album is great. 9th put it together just right. this is HIS chronic album.

  • wouzi

CLASSIC ALBUM N U CANT EVEN SKIP A TRACK STRAIGHT UP FIRE!!!!!!!

  • Azhar

On 2nd thought after listening to this cd all week, while the beats are good and crisp, they're also similar sounding and he has too many R&B beats, it's funny that he said Watch The Throne didn't inspire him, I thought the beats on WTT were different and bangin. His cd does sound like one long song, albeit a good song but still one long song....CD is 3.5 to me

    • Mu

Donnie, you hit the nail on the head bro. I criticized WTT too when it first dropped, but that album definitely crept up on me...

    • Disagree Homie

Watch The Throne was not a good album.

    • Donnie Wesley

I think 9th made the mistake that most hip-hop fans made about WATCH THE THRONE; at first listening your like what the hell is this shit, but, then it crept up on you like a thief in the night showing Kanye's-genius...I bet you if 9th could take that back he would...However, Kanye has that ability to make people scratch their heads at first and the later say, "damn, that was actually a great album!!!

  • jg

straight-up hot, i been bumping this and the exile mixtape...Master of Ceremonies oct 4!!

  • Andrei Iacob

  • Abdou Karim Kandji

    good album, good production!!

  • Comptonsmostwanted

Dope album bought it 4 stars

  • Panther49

    9th Wonder yo!! Great album!!

  • Dwight 'D wiz' Anderson

    dope! enough said.

  • noahc313

I highly doubt people complaining about this rating actually listened to the album so what are they speaking on, their J Cole expectations?

    • Real Words

ummm, so let me see, you're making an assumption on shit you probably do. This album was dope front to back. And to be perfectly honest I didn't have high expectations for the Cole album. It's exactly what I would expect from a major label debut from an artist who is head and shoulders above most of the rappers on majors. But it is not a "classic," timeless," album. Half of it has replay value, maybe, the other half, well you already know. I'm not gonna debate about it. I hope Cole is spitting for the next few decades, but on the next album, lets get some help on the production. He can produce some of the joints, he's a capable producer, but switch it up cuz some of his shit sound stale. 9th's beats on the other hand, jazzy, soulful, boom bap. Recognize son.

  • Andre Cooper

Unreal....The e-thugs hate on whatever is not in there favor.... Just because j.cole got a lower score than 9th it is wrong?Just because you feel that cole album is better doesn't change another's opinion about another album..... And cole album is dope as hell.... Stop trying to make a dominoe effect so every one can hate.... Fuck what you feel everyone has a choice...Nuff said

    • BetterThanColeWorld

I'm saying The Wonder Years is better than Cole World. Cole World is good lyrically, but beats sound flat..PERIOD

    • Donnie Wesley

Album is not a 3.5; easily a 4-rating and deserving!!!

    • Donnie Wesley

      Exactly!!!

    • Andre Cooper

to each his own..... I didn't say it was better than j.cole album but these e thugs cats like to start the hating trend.... I could care less who album is rated lower or higher....I have my taste and if i wanna rate this a 5/5 so be it....Only my opinion matters and you have your own.... I have heard alot of hiphop in my 30yrs and this is a solid album just real hiphop.... If you think cole album is better good for you.....End of the day both albums bang!!!!! (No hate)

    • Anonymous

tHIS 9TH ALBUM IS A 3.5 BTW, AND I'M A 9TH FAN TO THE FULLEST

  • Pugz

This gets a higher rating than Cole World? Jump off 9th's dick people he's been around forever and isn't selling any albums compared to Cole. Cole is selling 250k first week. If you want to give 9th a 4 at least give Cole 4 as well. Give respect where respect is due.

    • Mu

I HAD to jump in on this thread... At the end of the day, this is all opinion but you guys are clearly misguided saying that Evidence is an above average emcee. What is obvious is the Dilated Peoples and Evidence as a solo artist understand real hip-hop and they are great at picking good beats to rhyme on. That DOES NOT mean the emcee is any hotter because of it. There is nothing above average about Evidence... he makes real hip-hop, that's it. Cole IS an above average emcee, he just made an average album

    • Donnie Wesley

Mike, I would ask you "what do you judge an hip-hop album on"....I hope not record sales and is it stands right now, that is not what's wrong with hip-hop; that's what's wrong with the industry....All the young fans want to do is"shake their tail-feathers and that's why certain albums will out-sale others!!!

    • Mike Meraz

J.Cole's my favorite emcee right now but WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT RECORD SALES??? LMAO!! WTF! That's what's wrong with Hip Hop.

    • AyA

@Anon Wow Evidence average?? Dilated overrated??You claim to have their catalogs but have you actually listened to their albums? go listen to The Platform, Expansion team and Evs Weather Man LP.. Your Emcee comparisons are pointless.. it truly brings into question you criteria for listening to music,, do you listen to music based on who you think is better or who makes good music? I listen to all the emcees you mentioned they all have quality catalogues.. kids today...

    • Anonymous

i have his entire catalog, he's a good listen, but his doesn't have the skill set to best mr.cole at anything.

    • 2Da9thPwr

Go listen to Mr Slow Flow and listen to the release party then come back and we'll chat.@anon

DIALATED PEOPLES ANDS EVIDENCE ARE OVERRATED, THEY JUST STAY RAPPING OVER THEE NICEST BEST. TELL ME ONE INSTANCE WHERE EVIDENCE HAS EXCELL AT STORY TELLING OR METAPHORS. I LOVE REAL HIP-HOP FREEWAY'S A BETTER RAPPER THAN EVIDENCE AND AT LEAST WHEN HE GETS A ILL BEAT HE KILLS, I FIND REKS BORING BUT SHYT HE MIGHT BE BETTER THAN EVIDENCE. AS A MATTTER OF FACT IN MY YEAR OF LISTENING TO HIP-HOP NVR SEEN SOMEONE STAND UP SO STRONG IN EVIDENCE'S CORNER AND DECLARE HIM A WINNER LOL

And if i think otherwise i will go and bump some shaolin vs wu-tang.... Who are you to tell to stop listening to hiphop? You ain't special and you sure didn't create hiphop...Now again get j cole's dick out your mouth(choke)

    • Andre Cooper

Nigga please^^^^...... Evidence been hot for awhile and average? You need to go get your head checked....And j.cole is a beast...but you clearly have his balls all down your throat saying evidence is average!!!!

    • Anonymous

^^ HAHAHAHAH EVIDENCE COULD HAVE THE GREATEST BEATS IN THE WORLD, BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE THE SKILL SET TO MAKE A BETTER ALBUM THAN J. COLE, SORRY & IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE STOP LISTENING TO HIP-HOP IMMEDIATLY. EVIDENCE BEEN AROUND 15 YEARS PLUS NO ONE KNOWS HIM BECAUSE HE'S AVERAGE

    • chiefzs

I disagree I went in blind to all 3 big albums cole, 9th, and evidences new album and coles is the worst by far the beats and rhymes are way better in both ev's n 9th's coles got skills but came up short this time around just keeping it real

    • Anonymous

^^^^AGREED, DX IS SO DUMB WITH THIS ISH

  • Eh

How is 9th guna shit on watch the throne when his album is worse? lol i love 9th but his album was a big disappointment every beat sounded the same, he worked with mediocre rappers for the most part (Mac Miller) and it was just ehhhhh.. love the westcoast joint wit kendrick tho

    • TiiDo

Whoa chill!!!! Mac Miller isn't the illest emcee out but his joint on 9th's album is actually real nice. My opinion,I liked the way he sounded. 9th put out a tight project, been a while. No arguments about Band practise with Phonte & Median Retards.

    • Jg

wack rappers? yea he has one fuckin track wit mac miller, he also has talib, phonte and FASHAWN...you need to check urself dog u obv havent even listened the album. If I beleived in buying music this is one lp i would invest in. Not a classic tho

  • Listen Up

I'm a fan of J Cole, his album was ehh, the 9th album was dope!. As of when I just looked there are 880 posts on Coles review and 41 on 9th's. What's wrong with this picture?

  • Troof

I came to the comments section just to see how many e-thugs would find a way to hate on this masterpiece... yall cats never disappoint...it's unreal...LOL

  • J Splif

9th steppin it up in the beats department, some of them might be better than his best little brother shit. 5 stars

  • Boondock

Love 9th and phonte, but Evidence and Cole were the standouts of sept 27th. Cole had a strong effort and Ev had what maybe was the album of the year. 9th and Phonte arent what they were at one time.

    • TiiDo

@Bade I Co-sign with what you saying. I said the exact same thing after I jammed Cole World. The Wonder Years is a good look, Tigallo's is also solid. But yeah, Te & 9th threw it back circa '03 on Band Practise. I wonder if it might not be a leftover from their little brother times...

    • Bade

Disagree.. Cole didn't live up to expectation album is of similar standard to his mixtapes not exceptional.. Evidence was ok.. 9th out put out possibly his best album and Phonte delivered a solid LP that could have used better beats but concept and rhymes were pure fire..

  • 9*

forgot a complaint... 9th, stay off the mic man. you're not pete rock, your voice isn't dope. your music is.

  • 9*

9th def came through with the production... if you like 9th wonder, cop this shit. "band practice" with phonte showed me little brother has more classic material in them, that joint is BY FAR the standout cut on the album. if 9th doesn't get back with te and pooh for a reunion, he's only hurting himself. it's clear the best shit these guys do, is together. and there ain't no shame in that. q-tip is the man, but he was unstoppable in tribe. my only real complaint is mac miller, i can't stand the kid, flow sucks, lyrics suck, image sucks, says nothing. other than that, this is a gem. 9th really serving up some soul for the heads here. will be copping this and feeling good about it. i'd say this is the best shit 9th has done since the minstrel show, top shelf production. 4/5 for me.

  • MP

I agree with this review. 4 stars for me too.

  • ASEE

REVIEW THE NEW J-LIVE AND PHONTE RECORDS!!!!

  • Christopher English

Ok... let me start off by saying that I'm definitely a fan of 9th and his whole camp... both before and after. Dude has made some truly incredible beats You can never front on that. But in my opinion, his latest work is just kinda boring. I'm talking about this album and Phonte's latest. My thing is that you can be a fan and not like EVERYTHING that someone does.

  • Ali Lafayette Rhea

No question the kid is nice and no doubt he gets busy- I'm not talking about him but Ali Lafayette Rhea. One Love

  • OK

Couldnt get thru the album without falling asleep/shooting myself in the face lol love 9th but he just aint the same.....same with phonte

  • Azhar

This is a compilation album..9th is a more polished producer than J Cole, he is not a rapper and a producer. He left the bars for the rappers and primarily stuck to the beats. I know they are the last 2 reviews but other than that i don't know why people are comparing the cd's. J Cole is a new artist 9th is not, honestly somebody on their 3rd solo cd and umpteenth cd period I would expect more from him than a new artist just coming out with his 1st cd.. Both CDs are good but shouldn't be compared, they're 2 different artist

  • Rj

9th wonder needed to feature a lot of artist just take make the music good. J cole handled his whole album by himself praticly ! J cole deserves 5 starts

    • Warm world

Dude you can't even compare. Cole is no where near 9th's level,

    • Speak Da Truth

Cole Album = OVERRATED. Half, maybe more is pop bullshit. Didn't Lights Please come out almost 3 years ago? Sorry Cole, its far from a timeless album. I'm a fan of Cole, just thought the album was a bit weak. He shoulda had some other cats do some production. His best beat I've heard to date is on Kendrick Lamars album. This 9th album is dope though. If I only had $10 and had to choose between 9th and Cole, I would take the 9th album. Evidence album is better than Cole too. Just sayin.

    • obatron-one

Dude, 9th is a producer not an MC. Duh. Of course he needs to feature a lot of people, I don't recall this album being dubbed an instrumental album.

  • Zack Smith

Great album heard this n coles new 1 n its not close 9th came threw ol school fans gonna love it

  • jjjjjjjjjjjjjjj

Jesus! How good does an album have to be to get a 4.5. Joell Ortiz got 4.5 and this album is better than that.

  • rudy

Where's my Phonte review at? Completely agree with this, by the way. Well-written.

  • Max

well said. j. cole doesnt touch this

  • toppa shot

Some of these Cole stans are gonna have a shit when they see this got a 4. I'm not surprised by this. Haven't listened to this yet, but even the new Phonte album is better than Cole world

    • Doug Nichols

I don't put too much weight into the score differences when we're dealing with two different reviewers. It's the ones done by the same guy that raise my eyebrow (for example, Ketchum gave Cole 3.5 while he gave Big Sean 4)

  • Nii Martey

yo where can i download the album 4 free?? anylink??

    • calibeatbox420

Come on fam.....this is the music that we need to support.....you can download via Amazon and itunes......I bought mine at Bestbuy...thats right Y'all best buy has this....

  • Andre

If you dont think this album is more complete than J.Cole album, you need to take your lips off that niggas dick to speak to the real hip.hop fans, cause this album is complete, not a single song that can be questioned in production value and no repetitive subject matter, Come one 9th wonder is an MC!!! and J. Cole is just a Rapper. So both albums should be graded on a different scale J. Cole should get a 4 for his album and 9th Wonder should get a 4 as well, just because they need to be held to different standards, J. Cole is on the same scale as Wayne, Big Sean,Wale, etc.. and 9th wonder is on that scale of Jay-Z, Pharoahe Monch, DMX, ...etc.

  • blujet

My hometown hero drops another amazing album.

  • Anonymous

i waiting for everyone who says all 9th beats sound the same, but when the same argument is made for primo, pete rock, dre or any other producer, they call it a "signature sound." im from the 90's, but us old heads need to realize dude got skills

  • @meenAfresH

Took the words right out of my mouth with this review... Including the part about the filler tracks not taking away from the replay value... I will skip both of those cuts when I do replay though. However, I don't understand how The Wonder Years receives 4 when Cole World received 3.5. I agree with the 4 but Cole World is no where close to the quality of The Wonder Years? Doesn't make to much sense to me. Anyway... Dope review of a dope album.

  • ANONYMOUS

9TH DESERVES ANOTHER GRAMMY FOR THIS ONE! HIP HOP ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

tHIS ALBUM ISN'T BETTER THAN J. COLES CUT THE SHYT HIPHOPDX!

    • Anonymous

^^^^^9th's been mediorce for the last 5 years btw, it's not better than J. Cole DX sending the wrong message to the fans, and this album isn't on par with the RED album or Watch the Throne either

    • hod_guy

^how da fuk is this better, because it's not commercial, I love 9th big little brother fan too but the album was spotty but better than dream merchant 2, but Cole World is speacial, it's unique & people need to give it it's just view, the backlash stem from him comparing it to illmatic, if he never says tthat the purist wouldn't dog his album so much

    • asee

I'll be listening to this entire album for years to come, and I can't say that for more than one or two of Cole's new songs. 9th deserves his 4. Cole deserves his 3.5.

    • Anonymous

      much betterrrrrrr
