With Victory, his fourth album in five years, DJ Khaled continues his formula into the new millennium; big features, a street aura, and that

For better or worse, Miami-based DJ Khaled has been at the forefront of a clique-manifested movement, highlighted by the incessant use of southern rappers to promote his brand and name. True, he may provide the airwaves with street anthems and club bangers from time to time. However, his unabashed personality has been a deterring trait that castrates potential followers from his projects. With Victory, his fourth album in five years, Khaled continues his formula into the new millennium; big features, a street aura, and that’s about it.

Noticeably absent is Florida production duo Cool & Dre, who had been significant contributors to Khaled’s compilation discs in the past. On the other hand, The Runners keep their streak going through the single “Fed Up” , which features an all-star line-up of Drake, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, and Rick Ross. Over an infectiously energetic beat, the foursome goes on lyrical cruise control while Usher’s hook certainly does not disappoint. “On My Way” slows the tempo down by providing listeners with a mental picture of rappers in grind mode. However, with eight different artists laying out their own stories, the record is a bit laboring to listen to.

Despite Khaled’s passionate rants about bringing a positive image back to the hood, it’s clear that his definition of being victorious is synonymous with financial wealth. This is obvious on “Bring The Money Out,” where Nelly’s uninspiring lyrics make for a hot mess. Lil Boosie and Ace Hood don’t fare any better, leaving Schife’s bass-pounding production with nothing memorable. The cliché record “Rockin’ All My Chains” sounds exactly like you think it would; when in the club, rock all your chains. Opening with veteran emcee Bun B, the verses progressively get worse. In fact, it’s almost downright unfair to put Birdman and Soulja Boy on the same song as Bun B, which settles as an awful decision by Khaled.

One of the few highlights comes on the title-track, as Nas spends nearly two minutes weaving tales of extracurricular activities only available to the victors. Lending words to the unwise, Nas cunningly asks,  “He who has begun is half done, why you waitin’?” This is only topped by his line that acknowledges rumors of personal wealth (“I feel intelligence is my wealth / However, ‘how enormous is Nas’ pocket?’ is a pop-quiz to gossipers”). The Inkredibles and R&B singer John Legend play their positions well, taking a backseat and giving Nasir a soulful sound bed to flow over. “All I Do Is Win” is another notable performance, with the trio of Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross and Ludacris rocking the mic deservingly. When listening to this track, it’s definitely easy to imagine people in the club following T-Pain’s words like a game of Simon Says.

For listeners hoping to hear something brilliant from the Terror Squad member on Victory, they need only listen to the failed nostalgia in the intro. Attempting to reenact “Victory,” Diddy’s (then Puff Daddy) hit record from the '90s, DJ Khaled’s monologue sounds more comical than inspirational, a degradation that has been created in the last five years by his phrases “Listennnnnn!” and “We the best!” Interestingly enough, other notable rappers and deejays have established catchphrases without feeling the backlash. We may look back on DJ Khaled’s legacy in Hip Hop and see some shining moments. However, Victory as a whole product will certainly not be one of them.

khaled is fat joe's bitch like fat joe was to big pun. although i will give fat joe props to that darkside album. wellcome back don.

  • DJ_Howie

It's pretty sad when there's only one highlight track and that's the one with Nas. Sure All I Do Is Win is a positive outgoing song, but honestly, the radio is going to kill that very soon if not already so don't even consider it a banger. Everyone's going to be sick of it, just like I'm So Hood and Out Here Grindin (just to name a few tracks). I would have given it 2 stars, but it finally hit me that Bun B...was put on the same track as BIRDMAN...AND MuthaF_ _ _in SOULJA BOY!?!?! REALLY!?! SMH...shame on Khaled...SMH. Bad enough Wayne was on Nas & Damian Marley's track...(a step up from Soulja Boy)

    KHALED IS NOT THE BEST

  • HiraMane689

Honestly, I only listen to this album for the song with Nas, and All I Do Is Win, which BTW Ludacris killed it. I have been grew tired of Khaled and his chants, best songs he had before this is "We Taking Over" and "Im So Hood"....the REMIX! I give this album 2Xs for the two best songs on it....lol

  • L-dub

only gave it 2/5 cause Nas killed that track.

  • Big Slink

This one star is because i feel sorry for bun b that they put him on that track.

  • Brian Black

Khaled has worked hard to fit into hip hop and he has experienced success. He is lucky to be making money with the rappers and producers that work with him because his name alone in hip hop is NOT the selling point. Fact is, Khaled comes from money and has paid his way into hip hop since he was on pirate radio. Affiliating himself with the hood with his rants sounds comedic because IT IS. Here we have a rich Arab acting ghetto-what a joke. Hopefully he will continue to make money for the sake of his family and the people that get paid of his work. It's a shame this chipmunked voiced Dj can't present himself as he truly is. If he did maybe he would"nt exist in hip hop but he would have RESPECT.Hopefully at some point, he will value what it means to have respect.

    • ________________

i feel you on that one. idk why it's wrong to come from a family with money and be a hip-hop artist, it worked for will smith...btw, didn't will smith get the first grammy for a hip-hop song?

  • Jay The Producer

man... i jus wish he was more into workin wit better artists... nas is like really the only one on that cd that made a track hot.

  • big braveheart

Khaled just looks a sad idiot and the quality of his choice of music is utter pish. He does look a bit of a miserable cunt on that cover - smile u fucker!

  • a force to be reckoned with

    garbage

  • iceyjesse

wasn't bad but not that good neither it has hits and also had horrid songs like (rockin my chains) and (bring the money out). But it has songs like Victory, Fed Up, All I Do Is Win, and Rep My City. I would say just get those songs and be done with the album. 4 stars for 4 good tracks.

  • KingNick

Uncle Khaled makes some great hits, but this album was deffinetly not his best. victory and rep my city where the 2 best tracks on the album.

  • MusicFiend

a good track here and there...luda and Drake came hard on this.

  • Gods_Son23

For an album/compilation like this you expect at least 2-3 hot tracks but there really ain't anything great here. The Nas verse is nice but the beat isn't great so not even that track fits into anything special.

  • box

    same shit as always yell

im guessing this is wack... http://watchthishiphop.blogspot.com

  • C-arson

WHY IS THIS ALBUM NOT RATED ANYMORE????

  • R.O.D 253

it gets one star 4 Nas dropping a hot verse and a hot song ''victory'' (title track) other than that it follows the same formula over & over again..money,cars,clothes,shoes,chains,hoes,sex blah blah blah..this is not a hip hop album..Nas had the best joint and the only highlight on the whole piece of shit album

  • DJPB

Khaled is the hotness. I don't know what you people are talkin' bout'.

  • Shawarma

Unlike khaled's past releases, this album doesn't have a slew of shitty songs and like 4 bangers, it has 1 banger and a slew of pretty-good-but-not-amazing tracks, so it's a pretty decent album...

  • Heat45

This album doesn't even deserve a 1... I didn't expect it to be great.. But this was flat out horrible..

  • HOEYUNO!!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Why is this guy still around. Your wack khaled.

  • nas

Overall, in my opinion, this album is whack. I rate it 1 simply for the song 'Victory' which is the sickest on the whole damn album. I dont understand why he would drop artists such as jadakiss and kanye from the album and instead have some next artists who we aint never heard of =S

  • MalcolmLittle

I gotta hate on him !!! His voice is annoying and he doesent make any of the music that is on this album. How are you just gonna take other peoples music and mash it up on an album and call it "yours" ? Wtf khalid ? WOW, Look at this black diamond chain for under $1600, you cant find that ANYWHERE else !!!! http://ning.it/asY6YQ Fine men's and woman's diamond jewelry at affordable prices http://www.212diamondcity.com

  • bali_305

I've been bumpin dis shit from its release..shit tight for real..stop hatin..

  • whatdoyouexpect

review nailed it.. 'all i do is win' & 'fed up' are good if you like the club/radio sound, and nas's great long verse on 'victory' is layered with rhymes.. rest is trash, but its not like khaled was trying to make something thats gonna change music, although he talks shit like he did - what a clown

  • Tizz Da Xtraordanaire

Album is cool, DJ Khaled albums never have my attention for long but you can usually count on a few gems on each release that validates it's existence. Homie has a lot of respect in the industry because the features list always has some heavy hitters, having the Runners in his corner keeps the production solid throughout. I think his main problem is putting the right artists on songs, sometimes it feels like he just puts people on it because he can and he thinks it's gonna be a hit just cause. "Rocking All My Chains On" is a cliche' concept to begin with then throw on birdman and Soulja Boy now you got a mess of a track. But then on the other end he get it right sometime like the Nas "Victory" track which is the hardest joint on the album. If homie ever makes a greatest hits of all his albums he could have a great compilation but his albums by themselves be just cool to say the least

  • C-arson

this album should of been called Failure

  • A1thegift

    This CD was Terrible!!!

  • Keezie

Stop hating & get money nuccas. It's not the best but he's working & getting play. His singles that are on the radio are good & he managed to show how well T-Pain still fits on a song despite his troubles after D.O.A. Rockin All My Chains was a stupid idea like the writer said (opinion) & throwing the amount of people he did had for On My Way was a bit much but he's the only DJ out that's really putting out mixtapes that are passing for albums at the moment. Seriously. Other DJ's aren't getting video play right now so he's using his time in the limelight properly for the moment.

  • BEHOLD-PRINCE-JIMMY

Mr.Bloggers.....................I already told you what i think of Khaled so i think this album MIGHT be one of the greatest albums of all times. Top 10 album. Maybe, if Khaled do it right he might have a masterpiece. "PrinceJimmy08 (Twitter) JOCK"

  • Articulate1

"We the best"...at being annoying faggots! Nas is the only thing remotely good about this horrible project. This wack sand nigga should take his dad's oil money and do something else besides fuck up hip-hop.

  • Tom

So... can someone tell me why Khaled is on the CD? It's not like he produces that many beats (6 tracks from all of his albums). He doesn't rap. He doesn't really DO anything except put some annoying-ass drops on the album and get motherfuckers into a room. Most of the other mixtape DJs will at least mix or remix something. Khaled just gets people into a room and screams "WE THE BEST!" or "DJ KHALED!" Dude is the Paula Jones of hip-hop... famous for being the buddy of someone famous. Not even Paris Hilton status.

  • John Cochran

I never hold Khaled's albums againgst hm cause its hard to make an album with 2 dozen artists feel cohesive. Anyone who know Khaled's work should know that by now. I do think that being as he doesn't even produce most of it, he could put a little time into mathcing the right artists for the right songs, and maybe pushing them to cover more than the cliche topics. He's becoming predictable, I'd like to see him do an album with just maybe two or three big artists, like TI and Jeezy or Weezy and Juelz. It would be more of an event. Try giving the Runners a break too.

  • forkster187
