Kanye, Common, Method Man Sued For Sample

The three emcees are each accused of using a 70s jazz musician's music without permission.

Kanye West, Common and Method Man and their record companies are the subject of a $1 million lawsuit surrounding their use of a sample.

According to a report on Billboard, the daughter of late jazz musician Joe Farrell is accusing the emcees of using Farrell’s music without his approval.

The lawsuit said that each of the artists named used Farrell’s 1974 composition “Upon This Rock” in separate songs: West’s “Gone,” Common’s “Chi-City” and Method Man and Redman’s “Run 4 Cover.”

The lawsuit, filed by Kathleen Firrantello in U.S. District Court in New York, is seeking punitive damages of $1 million and asks that no further copies of the songs be made, sold or performed.

According to the article, none of the record companies or representatives for West, Common and Method Man were immediately available for comment.
