Mega Ran, a big fan of pro wrestling, pays homage to the legendary Bret “The Hitman” Hart in his new video for “Heel Turn (Bret’s Lament).”

“Bret is one of the greatest ever,” Ran tells HipHopDX. “But when a shift towards ‘attitude’ began in the 90s and bad guys became cool, Bret was trapped in a place he didn’t want to be. He had to make what they call the heel turn.”

Ran sees a parallel to Hart in the rap game, which inspired this track from the MC’s wrestling-themed project Mat Mania: Battle Royale.

“In Hip Hop, the bad boys win as well, so it can be very tempting for the nicest guy in rap to turn … because as they say, nice guys finish last,” he notes. “This is a rap version of how that conversation would go.”
