Akon doubts the rape allegations against Nelly are true. TMZ caught up with the singer at LAX to ask whether he thought Nelly was capable of doing the crime.

“Not the Nelly I know,” he said. “He’s an amazing person, man. I just know how scary these type [of] situations can be. I’m almost 100 percent positive he’s innocent.”

Akon theorized that it could’ve been someone in Nelly’s entourage who was actually the guilty party, but the St. Louis rapper was caught up in it as the bigger name. He also said celebrities are targets for false allegations.

“I don’t think it was him directly though,” he explained. “And often times those are the situations that you gotta be mindful of anyway because people like us are licks for these girls now. We are targets on every level. Half the time, they’ll set up a charge just for us to settle out just so we don’t deal with the embarrassment and go through the process of fighting it. Once you get that stigma, it’s on you whether you are innocent or guilty.”

Nelly was arrested for alleged rape in Auburn, Washington on Saturday morning (October 7). He was released later that day without any changes and denied the allegations on Twitter.

“Let me say that I am beyond shocked that I have been targeted with this false allegation,” he wrote. “I am completely innocent. I am confident that once the facts are looked at, it will be very clear that I am the victim of a false allegation.”
