G-Eazy beat out some Hip Hop heavyweights at the 43rd Peopleā€™s Choice Awards, winning the award for Favorite Hip Hop Artist on Wednesday night at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

TheĀ When Itā€™s Dark OutĀ rapper from Oakland beat off stiff competition from fellow Cali native Kendrick Lamar, as well as from DJ Khaled, Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa. Drake ended up in the R&B category while other popular rappers like Chance The Rapper, Gucci Mane and J. Cole were nowhere to be seen.

The 27-year-old took to Twitter shortly after receiving the award to thank his fans.

ā€œLove and respect to the fans yall are the reason weā€™re here in the first place and get to do the shit we do, forever gratefulā€

G-Eazy also seemed to acknowledge his underdog status in the race for the accolade, writing ā€œBeat the odds do numbers & remain humble.ā€

It wasnā€™t a great night for Hip Hop culture at the awards, where Drakeā€™sĀ VIEWS,Ā BeyoncĆ©ā€™s LEMONADEĀ and Rihannaā€™sĀ ANTIĀ all lost out to country singer Blake Shelton in the Favorite Album category. Rihanna did at least take home the crown for Best R&B Artist, beating out her ex-man Drizzy.
