Mariah Carey might be ready to take a long and quiet vacation after what happened in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. During her internationally televised live set on the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” stage, the veteran singer experienced some technical difficulties that upended the performance.

The incident took place during Carey’s closing set for ABC’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest annual show before the big ball countdown. The first portion of Carey’s set went well, opening with her version of “Auld Lang Syne,” but things shifted quickly after. When the music for Carey’s hit single “Emotions” came in, the situation went haywire.

Carey spoke over a live mic that she couldn’t hear the track while her dancers kept to the routine. In that instance, Carey stopped attempting to sing the track as the music continued. She walked around the stage playfully for a bit before stating to the crowd there hadn’t been a soundcheck for the song and saying she was trying to be a “good sport” before going to her next song.

The performance of “We Belong Together” wasn’t as marred but Carey was apparently past caring at that point because she periodically stopped lip-synching.

It didn’t take long for social media to provide their own commentary and reaction to the fiasco. Carey herself tweeted that “Shit happens” along with a gif of herself shrugging.

We’ve collected some of the reactions to Mariah Carey’s performance below.
