Alton Sterling & Philando Castile Shot Dead By Police Officers

We added two more names this week to the long list of Black people killed by police, including Mike Brown, Rekia Boyd, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Laquan McDonald and others. Alton Sterling was shot and killed outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he was selling CDs. A day after cell phone footage of the shooting spread like wildfire across social media, a Facebook live video captured the death of Philando Castile during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. Hip Hop mourned both deaths and called for an end to police brutality. Beyonce and Drake were among those who chimed in with statements calling for justice.

The Game and Snoop Dogg took their words beyond social media and led a peaceful rally to meet with the LAPD and have an open discussion in attempt to break through fear that the police and the Black community have for each other.

Many, including Jay Z and Chris Brown, released music to express their thoughts on the tragedy.

Five Dallas Police Officers Killed

A third shooting left five police officers dead in Dallas at a rally in response to the deaths of the two other men. The suspected sniper was identified as 25-year-old Micah X. Johnson, who authorities say was “upset about the recent police shootings.” He was killed at the scene in a nearby garage by an explosive planted by a police robot.

The social media responses continued to pour in. 50 Cent said he at first wasn’t surprised at the deaths of the police officers, but offered his condolences to their families and those of Sterling and Castile.

Joe Budden Continues Jabs At Drake

The week opened with “Wake,” Joe Budden’s second diss track directed at Drake, which was released a la “Back To Back.” This one was released Wednesday at 2:31 a.m., the time that Drake was born. It was packed with punches at Drizzy, involving Courtney from Hooters, his missing appearance in Fetty Wap’s “My Way (Remix)” video and his strained relationships with iLoveMakonnen and The Weeknd.

Of course, the Internet erupted, but no response from Drake.

The Slaughterhouse rapper then took to Instagram to say that he didn’t mean any harm to Drake and was only trying to get him to step his game up. Remember, he did say that VIEWS sounded uninspired.
