Common continues to flex his acting chops, now set to take the starring role in the TV version of Marc Olden’s 1974 “Black Samurai” book series, Variety reports.
The project is still under development and hasn’t been linked to a network yet, but with Common on board, and RZA listed as an executive producer, the show is reportedly generating interest.
The “I Used To Love H.E.R.” rapper is cast to play Robert Sand, who trains with a Japanese samurai master before proceeding to kick terrorist ass and fight corruption and racism in the name of righteousness and justice.

Producer Andre Gaines described the character as “the black Jason Bourne” in a statement to Variety.

“Black Samurai is one of the most unique, timely and fun experiences I’ve ever read, while at the same time tackling some serious subjects around race and diversity,” said Gaines. “With ‘John Wick 2’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ coming up, Common was an obvious choice for the role, and I’m thrilled to have him on board. I believe he’s the next great American actor.”
Common has a long resumé in film and TV, appearing in the 2016 movie “Barbershop: The Next Cut” and as a regular character on AMC’s “Hell On Wheels” from 2011-2014.
Gaines also spoke on RZA’s connection to the series.

“There is a long tradition and storied relationship between hip-hop and martial arts. Having RZA and the WuTang brand on board to executive produce will validate the series even more and mobilize the fans,” he said.
