I'm so sad to hear that Afeni Shakur has passed away at the age of 69. Not only was she Tupac's dear mother, but Afeni was a courageous freedom fighter in her own right. A member of the Black Panther Party, Afeni committed her life to the liberation of Black people. When she and 20 of her comrades (known as the Panther 21 or NY 21) were railroaded by the State, she acted as her own defense attorney and was acquitted of all charges. Since the death of her son, Afeni became a philanthropist. In the last 20 years, she has created numerous institutions and donated millions of dollars to promote the Arts, especially among urban youth. And on a personal note, I have rarely met anyone more warm, generous, sincere, and humble. This picture was from the last time that I saw her. We were in NY at the premiere of the Tupac Broadway musical. I'll never forget the pride and joy in her eyes that day. I will miss her deeply. Rest in Power Mama Afeni!!!!!
