Kendrick Lamar won five awards at last night’s Grammys. The Compton, California rapper also performed for the audience that included Taylor Swift, Alabama Shakes and Justin Bieber.
In addition to bringing his fiancee, Whitney Alford, as his guest to the event, Lamar brought some high school students from his alma mater, Centennial High School, on a field trip to the pre-show festivities.
“Seeing them out here, it just reminds me where you come from,” the rapper says in a video posted by Reebok. “I can see they got full energy, the same way I had, the motivation to wanna do something with themselves. In the next 10 years from now, hopefully they’ll be further than where I’m at. So it’s a beautiful thing.”

Earlier this month, Lamar received the key to the city of Compton from mayor Aja Brown.
