Kendrick Lamar and Quincy Jones were featured in Hypetrak Magazine Volume 2. The two artists sat down for a discussion about music.
“It’s funny because I was inspired by Back on the Block without even knowing it, combining Hip Hop and Jazz and you was the first to do it,” the Compton, California rapper says of Jones’ 1989 album.
Lamar asks Jones about his work as a producer on Michael Jackson‘s Thriller album.

“We went through 800 songs,” Jones says, “’cause I learned 50 years ago that a great song can make the worst singer a star and a bad song can not be saved by the three best singers in the world. So we went through 800 for Michael. We got a great singer. He’s got a great song. It’s over.”
Jones also details his advice for Lamar and younger generations.
“You don’t go for money or fame, ’cause if you do the shit that moves you, it’s gonna happen,” he says. “Music will never be more or less than you are as a human being, ’cause you get back what you give.”

The mogul praises Lamar for his work in the music industry.
“I’m glad you’re doing the amalgamation of all of our culture,” he says.
“That’s why people feel it,” Lamar responds. “It’s from God.”
