Big Hutch, also known as Cold 187um, worked with Dr. Dre on Above The Law’s 1990 album, Livin’ Like Hustlers, which they co-produced with Laylaw.

Cold 187um, who appears on Dr. Dre’s Compton song “Loose Cannons” with Xzibit, says that they discussed working together off and on throughout the years, but that talks picked up recently right before Dr. Dre began working with F. Gary Gray on Straight Outta Compton.

“[Dr.Dre] was like, ‘Man you know, I’m thinking about starting back to do some music again,'” Cold 187um says during an interview with VladTV. “This was when Beats had blew up, you know, but it was before the Apple deal.”

“He was like, ‘Man I was thinkin’ about doin’ some music, what about you?'” Cold 187um adds.

Cold 187um later called Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre did not answer, but that he called Cold 187um right back.

“‘I’m gonna be at the studio tonight,'” Cold 187um says Dr. Dre said to him at the time. “‘Slide through. I want to play some things for you. I think I’m on point right now.'”
