Straight Outta Comptonearned $60 million dollars on its opening weekend at the box office, nearly double projections and making it the #1 movie at the box office.

Despite its success, the city of Compton, California cannot screen the film due to having no movie theatre.

CBS Los Angeles spoke to the sociology professor at USC, Manuel Pastor about this shortcoming.

“It’s a low income area, it’s been heavily dis-invested in,” Pastor says. “When you live in a community that doesn’t have that kind of retail, it’s a sign that the community is devalued and people within the community feel devalued.”

Dr.Dre is donating all of the royalties made from his Compton: A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre album to building a performance arts centre in Compton.
