N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton became one of the most anticipated movie releases of the year and now the box office numbers are backing up that sentiment.

According to Billboard, the movie featuring the likeness of five Compton legends opened at an estimated $24.2 million in 2,754 North American theaters. Those projections well exceeded any other movie on Friday (August 14).

The film is also on track to incur revenue in the high $50-million range, blowing past pre-release estimates. Thursday night early screenings pulled in an estimated $4.96 million, also doing much better than any other film debuting at the same time.
