In the September issue of Vanity Fair, Taylor Swift discusses Jay Z‘s role in helping her and Kanye West make amends after West interrupted her 2009 MTV Video Music Award speech.

“I feel like I wasn’t ready to be friends with [West] until I felt like he had some sort of respect for me, and he wasn’t ready to be friends with me until I had some sort of respect for me” says the “Bad Blood” singer. “So it was the same issue, and we both reached the same place at the same time.”

Swift says becoming friends with Jay Z was a key step in reconciling with the Yeezus rapper.

“I think it was important, for Jay Z, for Kanye and I to get along,” Swift says.

“Kanye and I both reached a place where he would say really nice things about my music and what I’ve accomplished,” she continues, “and I could ask him how his kid’s doing.”

In 2010, West said he wrote a song for Swift and apologized for his actions at the awards.
