Method Man had to practice patience. After auditioning for a role he did not land in writer-director Judd Apatow’s 2009 film, Funny People, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper made a pledge to himself.
“I said if the opportunity ever came up again, I said I would jump at the opportunity to work with Judd,” Method Man says during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX.
Several years later, the Staten Island, New York rapper got the opportunity when he secured a role in the Apatow-directed Trainwreck, which was written by actor-comedian Amy Schumer and is due in theaters July 17.

“Being that it’s a Amy Schumer project and I love her comedy,” Method Man says, “it was a win-win for me.”
In Trainwreck, which follows Schumer’s character, a commitment-phobic career woman who meets a good guy, Method Man portrays Temembe, an orderly who had been a doctor in his native land.
“He came to America with hopes of being a doctor in America and wound up just being an orderly, so he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder, but he really genuinely cares about Amy’s father, played by Colin Quinn,” Method Man says. “I have this pseudo-African accent. I think I did pretty good. No one complained, so at the end of the day, I think I did pretty good.”

The rapper, whose The Meth Lab album is slated for an August 21 release, says that Schumer said that she wanted to rap for him. The exchange ended up being filmed on set.
“She’s a fan first and foremost, so she wrote a rhyme for me,” Method Man says. “She kept telling me the whole time that we were shooting that she was going to rap for me and she was preparing and getting it poppin and all that shit. I appreciate it because she’s a true friend. I don’t want to call her a fan because she’s a true friend.”
