Vince Staples says that he envisioned the buildup at the end of “Señorita.”

Staples describes the creation of the track, produced by Chicago duo Christian Rich, in part of Def Jam’s New Agenda series.

“I said, ‘Put some shit at the end of the song,”‘ he says of the multi-layered beat. “They was like, ‘You mean like some chords?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know what that is…. We be real minimal, simple with the descriptions. ‘Put some shit here. Put some shit right here.’ Just put some shit places.”

The Long Beach, California rapper says that when he was a child, he wanted to be a police officer after seeing an Eddie Murphy movie and a television show.

Beverly Hills Cop and combined with like Power Rangers and some shit like that,” he says, “I was like, ‘I’m about to be the police.’ My mama looked at me, she had never been so disappointed in me in her life. She’s like, ‘Don’t ever say that again.'”

Staples’ debut album, Summertime ’06, is slated for a June 30 release date.
