The half African-American and half Puetro-Rican incarnation of Spider-Man has been promoted to be an official member of the Marvel Comics universe, according to the Daily News.
Last year, it was announced that Childish Gambino was selected to voice the teen-aged Spider-Man in the forthcoming Disney XD Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.
In this series, which is slated to arrive in comic stores, tablets and smartphones this fall, Spider-Man is a teen named Miles Morales.

Series writer and co-creator Brian Bendis explains the reason behind changing the race of the character.
“Many kids of color who, when they were playing superheroes with their friends, their friends wouldn’t let them be Batman or Superman,” he says during an interview with the Daily News, “because they don’t look like those heroes but they could be Spider-Man because anyone could be under the mask.”
