A petition claiming Iggy Azalea’s Billboard Award for Top Rap song should be retracted has garnered more than 18,000 signatures via Change.org.
Azalea nabbed the award for “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX at last week’s 2015 Billboard Music Awards. According to the petition, Iggy should not have been eligible to even receive a nomination. Christian Ferguson, the petition’s organizer, has pointed out that Billboard’s eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. “Fancy” was released February 17, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility started.
“This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to ‘Anaconda’ by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would’ve won,” Ferguson explained within the petition. “Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without ‘Fancy’ as a nominee.”
Within the first 24 hours, 5,000 people signed the petition. An additional 13,000 have signed since.
Iggy received two nominations in the category: “Fancy” and “Black Widow.” She beat out Big Sean’s “IDFWU,” Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” and Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot Boy.”
