The fact you put, "message" in quotes is proof enough that you don't give a fuck about hip hop. Hold it to a higher regard than shit that just sounds dope in the moment. Thats pop music. If you want pop music go listen to it. But real hip hop is about the message, not just about how good of a rapper you are. Being able to slam good and catchy punchlines into your bars is the bare minimum. If you don't have social commentary its not hip hop bro, its hip pop. Thats just lyrically. Now production wise kendrick samples the music that is nostalgic to him, and an entire generation. The album has moments of G-funk, jazz, Spoken Word, and even Neo-soul. The structure of this album, and his methodical progression through the poem is a concept that nearly surpasses every hip hop album. ending with the interview with pac, while covering concepts from complexion bias within the black community to the tax code, to self doubt, to bringing yourself out of self doubt, obviously racial social commentary. There are no wholes in this album. If you like hip hop, and further music that defines us as a culture, Jazz, blues, neo soul, and the mother to hip hop, spoken word. Simply put if you don't like this album, simply put you don't like hip hop.

So King Kunta, I, Blacker The Berry, Alright, Complexion, Wesley's Theory, etc., are boring and will put people to sleep?
