Rapsody recently stopped through Hot 97 for a chat with hosts Ebro, Peter Rosenberg and Laura Stylez to discuss the impact of her Kendrick Lamar collaboration “Complexion (A Zulu Love)” off K. Dot’s recently released sophomore album, To Pimp A Butterfly.
During the conversation, the North Carolina emcee noted that although it was a great feeling when the song was released, her emotions didn’t overwhelm her as she’d been practicing for this moment for a while.
“It’s a huge platform,” Rapsody says. “Just to watch it live on Twitter and stuff and to see people’s reaction. All these people who this is their first time hearing you and discovering you. It’s crazy to watch but at the same time it really didn’t get to me because I’ve been practicing for this moment forever. Once you in there day and night and this is something that you dream and you envision and you see it over and over again — [for] the whole two or three months I had to keep this a secret, it was like, ‘I don’t know what to expect.’ And then when it came [out] it felt good but it felt normal too like, ‘This is how it’s supposed to be.’ It’s really been a good feeling, though. To put me on that platform, it’s just like you’re getting closer. It was dope.”

Later in the interview, Rapsody spoke on her opinion regarding other female artists, most notably Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea. Although Rap’ admits to not being fully into them, she does admit that Minaj’s talents are “undeniable.”
“Nah, I haven’t really gotten into that,” Rapsody says. “It’s not about being too mainstream, I listen to some mainstream things, it just doesn’t appeal to me. There are some Nicki [Minaj] songs that I like. She can spit, that’s undeniable. She is crazy talented… I listen to a little bit of everything.”
