While speaking with Complex, Harlem, New York rapper A$AP Rocky spoke on the art of music. He revealed that just about anybody can make a song today, but added that when it concerns his own music, he does worry about how it’s “viewed and perceived.”

He then explained that his music and his need to create is the reason why he’s maintained a relatively low-profile for the past couple of years.

“Anybody can make a song today,” A$AP Rocky said. “Make a song about 10 bitches on your dick and it’s gon’ sell. All jokes aside. It just gotta be catchy…I’m not knocking anybody for what they do. I’m just saying what I prefer to do—what I want to do with my art. And how I want it viewed and perceived. I want people to know that I put my everything into my art. Even—I put it before myself. Not being seen in two years. Creating. Not putting out any projects. This is just me creating and trying to involve myself.”

A$AP Rocky also shared his opinion on the new drug laws taking effect in various states across the nation. He compared the treatment of marijuana today to that of alcohol during the Prohibition era.

“You should do what you want to do,” he said. “How they say ‘Yeah, you know, you can’t smoke weed. It’s illegal.’ And then on the West Coast you let people open up these dispensaries and then don’t tell ‘em ‘Okay, we gon’ raid you every once in a blue moon [when] we want to. Cause we feel like it.’ You know what I mean? Yeah, it’s legal in the state of California, but not federally. What kind of loophole shit is that…And that’s what I’m just saying. I’m not targeting the law. Even just the whole—Think about it, the weed is illegal now. But think about Prohibition era when fuckin’ liquor and shit…And now it’s free because they figured out they could make a commodity, monetize it, and they could capitalize off of it. That’s what they did. Tobacco industries and liquor industries is what run our political campaigns.”
