With their newly-released project, Blade Of The Ronin, serving as their second studio album, the New York City duo known as Cannibal Ox recently took time to speak on their progress as artists, during an interview with iHipHopDistribution.

Both Vordul Mega and Vast Aire spoke on getting their start in the cypher scene, and the transition from artists heavy in the cypher scene to that of recording artists.

“We came from cyphering,” Vordul Mega said. “As soon as we put The Cold Veintogether, we was coming out of the cypher scene. So now, the difference I feel is we kinda reinstating ourselves as rappers. We getting into practices of writing and inspiration for production…It’s like all integrated now.”

“We definitely came from the cypher world…Just like going real hard,” Vast Aire added. “And learning how to do music. We was putting songs together. And learning how you can’t have eight dudes on every song. And going through all of that. So, there was a lot of trial and error back then, but we figured out that every song couldn’t have 10 dudes on it. And we figured out who sounded good with who. And who should get on a hook. And here we are now.”

In addition to speaking on their transition as artists, the duo also spoke on what they learned during the recording process for Blade Of The Ronin.

According to Vast Aire, the two were able to piggyback off of each other’s ideas while recording the album. He also revealed that Blade Of The Ronin remained authentic to their past sound.

“We like to draw from each other’s ideas,” Vast said. “And just pull from each other’s creative awareness. He might come up with the title. The title will create a theme. And then the next thing you know we’re just going off of ideas. So, we love that we kept that vibe raw. And that’s what you hear. That’s why people keep saying ‘It feels like nothing has changed.’ Because nothing has changed. We’re just natural. We just go in and we just write. And make the best song that we can make.”
