Wu-Tang Clan is one of the most storied groups in Hip Hop history so whenever a new-comer, especially one that isn’t from New York and doesn’t typically have as intricate a rhyming style as the Wu, decides to name a song after one of the Clan’s, it becomes controversial.
That’s exactly what Drake did when he titled a song off of his last solo studio album, Nothing Was The Same, with “Wu-Tang Forever.” Even the Clan was split about how to react to what the Toronto native did.
Recently, before a recent show in Toronto, Ghostface Killah, a long-known supporter of Drake, spoke to members of the Canadian press about the OVO boss.
“Drake is brilliant,” Ghost told members of the press after being asked about the Canadian emcee. “I don’t look at Drake like these other little rhyme guys nowadays, because I think he can really spit a rhyme. So I put him in a different category.”
The Staten Island emcee and Wu member also came to Drake’s defense when it comes to lyricism as many criticized him when he initially dropped the Wu-Tang-referencing track.
“A lot of people might try to play him out … but I’m a lyricist, so once my antennas go up and I hear somebody who sounds really nice on the beat and got a lot of fans and stuff like that … I keep listening to him,” Ghost explained according to Yahoo Music Canada. “He’s just one who caught my ear. He’s really, really doing his thing. I can’t (dump) on him. Nothing bad I can really say about him.”
Inspectah Deck is one member of Wu-Tang Clan who didn’t approve of Drake’s “Wu-Tang Forever” song. He cited the song had little to actually do with the Wu aside from it’s title and opening line. Read more of Ghostface Killah’s related statements here.
