Common’s decision to reunite with his longtime collaborator No I.D. has been rewarding.
Before his tenth album — Nobody’s Smiling — landed in the top 10 on Billboard Charts, No I.D. enlisted audio engineer extraordinaire Young Guru to mix the project.
No I.D. also asked Guru to contribute to Jhene Aiko’s debut, Souled Out.

Both albums have been nominated for Grammys at the 57th annual award show. Is Guru’s golden touch the reason why?
HipHopDX recently spoke to the mix-master about earning two Grammy nominations for his role on Common and Jhene Aiko’s albums.
“It’s always good to be acknowledged for the work that you do,” Guru told DX during Grammy weekend. “I love Common’s album because it’s Common, that’s my guy. Him and No I.D. getting back together is a great thing and also No I.D. is who pulled me in on the Jhene Aiko album, it was a really good experience.”

Nobody’s Smiling received a nomination in the Best Rap Album category and Souled Out is a part of the Best Urban Contemporary group. Guru won’t be there to step on stage if either album is announced as a winner but the occasion would signify his first victory at the prestigious ceremony.
“We’ll wait and see, you always hope for yourself to win a Grammy,” Guru says, “so it’d be cool if Common won or Jhene won.
“The one thing I do wish, is that more people from the Hip Hop and urban side were more involved in the voting process at the Grammys,” Guru continued. “Everybody talks about the misrepresentation in our genre of Hip Hop/R &B but the thing is we have to vote…Hip Hop has to properly recognize itself.”
