Rappers need to form their own union, and govern themselves. That's the only way to keep the culture from becoming nothing more than a tool for the greedy and powerful. Rappers can't organize because they're too afraid they might lose one dollar. I was hoping this Zulu Nation shit would become that, but it doesn't look like anything is happening. Think about who the most powerful rappers are in terms of influence, popularity, respect, and money. Jay-Z, Eminem, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Nas, Lil' Wayne, even Drake's punk ass. Even guys like Common, Rick Ross, Diddy...none of these guys are dummies. You might not like their music, but they aren't stupid. They all have their niche and their audience. If they used the influence they have to start re-shaping the rap into something a little more focused on reality, growth, and awareness, it would make a big difference. People say "rap is not the reason for all the violence", but it's definitely a contributor though. When I see thug ass niggas walkin' down the street demonstratively yelling out rap lyrics, you can tell it's fueling them in a negative way. When a car pulls up next to me playing Bobby Shmurda loud as fuck, I already know what type of mothafuckas I'm gonna see in the car when I look over. It's cool to be ignorant right now. When I was growing up, rappers made it cool to have knowledge, and it made a difference in the community. You don't have to be 'preachy' in order to give your people knowledge. Even NWA, Ice-T, Wu-Tang, Scarface, and many others all dropped jewels back in the day while still being hardcore. It can be done, it just takes a little bit of effort. Don't give me this "they're just rapping about their environment". C'mon man, these fools are just bragging about money and being ignorant because that's what sells and they're hypnotized by money. It's worth it for the government to let a few niggas get rich if it keeps them from uplifting their brothers. Rappers gotta break the spell and form a union. It would be unprecedented.
