Speaking with HipHopDX about his contributions to Childish Gambino’sbecause the internet, Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson explained how he came to produce the majority of the rapper’s sophomore album.

Goransson, who is signed to Jay Z’sRoc Nation label, began his musical collaboration with Childish Gambino on the rapper’s mixtape Culdesac following their meeting through the television series Communitywhere he served as a composer. In addition to his role as a composer for the sitcom New Girl and last year’s film Fruitvale Station, Goransson has also worked with other musicians like Chance The Rapper and ZZ Ward.

“Gambino started talking about because the internet, I wasn’t sure I was gonna be really involved in it,” Goransson says in a clip that debuted as part of today’s DX Daily. “I knew he had gotten his house in the Palisades and at that time, Donald could—now he can work with anyone he wants. I know he wanted to experiment more and try to figure out how to create this really new amazing sound. I was like trying to like figure out if he even wanted me involved at all. I remember kind of inviting myself to the house. I was like, ‘Here, I am.’ Let’s work today.”

“I was in the room and heard ‘Crawl’ and was like, ‘This is amazing. If I’m gonna be involved in this project I really need to step my game up to the next level,'” he added. “I hadn’t heard production like that in a while and I thought it was so fresh and so cool. I got really inspired. We sat down and we did ‘Flight of the Navigator.’ And I was thinking to myself, ‘I can be on this level too.’ I really had to step up my game and I went back to the house a couple of times and the next thing was ‘The Worse Guys.’ And then the day after Donald had a session with someone else and he didn’t come up with anything cool so then I went back more and in the end, I guess 80% of the tracks were produced by me.”
