While making a promotional run in the UK, Compton rapper YG stopped by TimWestwoodTV for a freestyle over Drake’s “0 to 100.” Touching on his recent commercial success and name-dropping his hometown, the My Krazy Life artist also referenced Iggy Azalea’s hit single “Fancy.”
Hinting that the production team behind “Fancy”—London based trio The Invisible Men—borrowed heavily from DJ Mustard’s production style, YG rapped, “they jocking.”
“And DJ Mustard, that nigga producers is they jocking/ ‘Fancy,’ don’t it sound like he produced that shit?” he rapped while on the show.
The Los Angeles beat-maker produced the bulk of YG’s recent debut as well as singles like Tyga’s “Rack City” and 2 Chainz’ “I’m Different.”
In May, Mistah F.A.B. claimed that DJ Mustard had taken his approach to production from a Bay Area style. “We created a sound in the Bay Area and it took several years for it to catch on,” F.A.B. said at the time. “The Mustard sound that’s pippin’ right now…That was created in the Bay Area. We not mad at it at all. I’m not mad at it because I’m still able to get in and do what I do.”
While freestyling for Westwood, YG also made note of his album’s success, rapping, “They thought I was a one hit wonder, now I got three hits and a classic album up under my muthafuckin’ belt.”
YG’s “My Nigga” single has been certified platinum and the album itself debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release in March.
