Sitting down alongside Warren G for an interview with DJ Skee on SKEE Live, Kurupt recalled his early thoughts on Kendrick Lamar before speaking on the TDE rapper’s dedication track “Kurupted.”
“I mean Kendrick blew me away,” he said. “When I first met Kendrick was one thing, but then Terrace [Martin] put me up on a record called ‘Kurupted.’ It was like a dedication strictly to myself. I was just startled, like, ‘Wow. This is K. Dot?’”
“I was just startled at his dedication to his craft as well as how much love he has for the original generation,” he added. “A lot of people don’t show no love to the original generation. They always ask me, ‘Who’s your idol?’ I let’em know from the door, Rakim. Our generation was different. We had a lot of respect and love for the ones who inspired us. Nowadays they really don’t do that so much. So Kendrick really blew me away with that. Then, when he hit’em with ‘Control’…I told people, ‘Man, look, you better leave the kid alone.’”
Kendrick Lamar’s “Kurupted” was released in 2009. “Kurupted” is available for streaming on HipHopDX here.
In 2010, Kurupt featured on Kendrick Lamar’s Terrace Martin produced “Get Bizy.” Last year, Kendrick Lamar co-opted some of Kurupt’s lyrics from the song for his verse on Big Sean’s “Control.”
“I’m important like the Pope,” Kurupt raps on the 2010 song. “I’m the King of New York / I’m live from South Central / I’m a Muslim on pork.”
Besides a reference to his “big homie Kurupt” during the “Control” verse, Kendrick raps: “I’m important like the Pope / I’m a Muslim on pork / I’m Makaveli’s offspring, I’m the King of New York.”
