Angie Martinez Resigns From Hot 97

"This was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make," Angie Martinez writes on her Instagram account, "but ultimately it is time to move on."

Angie Martinez resigned from her on-air post at New York radio station Hot 97 today (June 18).

"Today I resigned from HOT97,” the radio personality wrote in a post on her Instagram account. "I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly....the listeners... for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show stay tuned.... Love, angie”

The photo accompanying her Instagram post features a close-up shot of sunglasses and the following caption: “Life has to move forward. Everything has its time and everything ends.”

In April, Martinez described having worked for Hot 97 for more than half of her life.

“I’ve been working in this building since I’m 18,” she said at the time. “I started here as—I wasn’t really an intern because I was getting paid. I think I was getting paid $3 an hour. I was driving the vans. I learned how to run the boards so then I started board-opping. I was the assistant to almost every department at some point. I worked my way out. My thinking was I wanted to be a Program Director. So in order to be a Program Director I was going to learn every piece of the building. But then it just turned out that I kind of fell in love with being on-air. Now you couldn’t pay me enough money to be a Program Director because that part of the job is so much more fun.”

As an on-air talent, Martinez has interviewed Tupac and Jay Z, among others. With the former, she has said she had to edit a two-hour conversation with Tupac into a minutes-long piece for radio.

“When I had to do that edit, I still wanted to represent what he was trying to—I didn’t want to misrepresent him,” she said. “Yes I toned it down and took out all that other inflammatory stuff. But I still didn’t want to misrepresent him. ‘Cause I didn’t feel like if something bad happened after that it was something I was gonna be okay with. Even now to this day I still have it. I been wanting to reach out to his mother. If his mother says, ‘Yeah, put it out’ then maybe I would just put it out.”

Angie Martinez's Instagram post from today is as follows, as is a tweet from Hot 97 about Martinez's final show on the station:

to me both stations play the same music and sometimes the same song plays at the same time. I'm surprised that she is going to power 105.1 so soon. I guess there is not a non-compete clause in there contracts.

My butter pecan puerto rican Queen has escaped the shit dungeon that is Hot 97 now. Hopefully my asian goddess can escape too and have her own show on some other station... Fuck what if Info left too and her and Angie team up to do afternoons on Power 105.1?

Man... I remember when she hosted this lil Latina beauty pageant at Queens Center Mall back in the day... I answered some hip hop trivia question and she blessed me with a t-shirt. I quickly proposed marriage, and she responded "awww, I love you too, papi" sweetest letdown ever... still didn't stop my soul from burning when I saw her with my nigga Q-Tip...

Just got the call, Hot 97 is gonna change it's format to appeal to a wider audience by playing top club hits like WKTU The Beat meaning you're gonna hear EDM like that Testio dude, Pop like Beiber and top Rap like Drake. Slow gettin his a$ses whooped at Summer Jam is to blame and they're saying Ebro shouldn't have let 50 perform since he was banned for the very same thing his last Summer Jam 10 years ago.

This is interesting. Leaving Lukewarm 97 just after Star dissed the shit out of them. Anyway, good move IMO. Guess she finally woke up and didn't want to be associated with Shebro and Rodentberg anymore.

Lmao Star gonna have a field day with this one. What the hell happend though??? Shit sounds out of the blue.

    I wonder what happened.

  • EvenOdd

You know some shit went down. You don't just resign out of nowhere and it be your last day...especially in that type of business.

    • Anonymous

      no. what say you now?

    • Anonymous

      Ebro is that you!?

    • Anonymous

obviously you're not at a point where you're reflecting over your long tenure at work and life and weighing out your opportunities and existence, you're still striving but there's no need to look for conspiracy or gossip, it's very ugly of you to be that way

    stinky ass latina

  • #contemporaryFMrap

wow, dame speaking up, chuck d speaking up, angie dipping 3 people right there to get this contemporary format rolling, and on fm please, not satellite, the time is now spread the word if you tired of this state of radio, use the hashtag

Like everyone else said I'm sure she sick of dealing with Ebro. The man who took pay from Southern artists and destroyed the credibility of a New York radio station

  • LIPSapp

If you want to make History again, Angie, come help us build Radio. We have 24 stations so far, and one has your name on it.

Angie taking Dame's advice, good look.

This is a sign that Hot 97 is pretty much becoming the Rosenberg/Ebro FM. Funkmaster Flex needs to get on this podcast game quick and leave the ship before he gets co-opted.

    • contemporaryFMrap

used to think podcast was the way but there's over a million of then now, like websites fm hasn't grown in over 2 decades with more sports talk and similar top billboard stations than ever, flex would thrive in a contemporary world, if there was a job for that............. #contemporaryFMrap

Angie is a cutie! A MILF for sure. Glad she got away from that weak ass station and ol man Ebro. Hot 97 is now nothing more than a down south jukebox.

Lol tired of hearing nikkas throw that latino shit around like it's a race, muthaphucka latino ain't no race, that's like niggas saying "I'm american" instead of "I'm black". That ho is white by the way, she just hides behind that "I'm latina" shield so she can get away with much more fuckery

    • Anonymous
