Kanye West said today (June 17) during a discussion on the Cannes Lions Festival seminar “Technology, Culture, and Consumer Adoption: Learning to Read the Cultural Landscape” that he was not fond of Samsung because it is not the premier technology company.

“The reason I said I didn’t like Samsung particularly is because throughout my entire life, because of how my parents raised me, I have to work with the No. 1,” Kanye West said, according to Fader. “I can’t work with anyone but Jay Z, because he’s No. 1. I can’t be with any girl but Kim [Kardashian, his wife], because that’s the girl whose pictures I look at the most and get turned on by. I’m not going to represent any company but Louis Vuitton, because that’s No. 1. … Samsung is not quite Apple, but it showed that Jimmy [Iovine] and [Dr.] Dre would be able to connect with the No. 1 influencers.”

Apple purchased Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s Beats Electronics for $3 billion last month, according to Business Insider.

Iovine said in a statement last month that the Beats alliance with Apple is fitting.

“I’ve always known in my heart that Beats belonged with Apple,” Jimmy Iovine said at the time. “The idea when we started the company was inspired by Apple’s unmatched ability to marry culture and technology. Apple’s deep commitment to music fans, artists, songwriters and the music industry is something special.”

Kanye West also discussed the state of the world while at the Cannes seminar.

“The world as a whole is fucking ugly,” he said. “The Internet as a whole is fucking ugly, too. But I’m not in the construction business.”
