Public Enemy’s Chuck D says that he has a new objective.
“My goal by year’s end is to change the face and sound of urban radio,” Chuck D says during an interview with Billboard. “I’ve been in this shit 30 years, too long to just sit and let it be. I’m not going to be the grim reaper. I don’t want to be the grim reaper. But people have to stand up and we need some change, and it’s time.”
The rapper says that the use of the N-word and the lack of New York representation at Hot 97’s Summer Jam earlier this month was “the last straw.” The former is particularly troubling to Chuck D.

“If there was a festival and it was filled with anti-Semitic slurs… or racial slurs at anyone but Black people, what do you think would happen?” he says. “Why does there have to be such a double standard?”
Chuck D also takes issue with the dearth of local acts on the Summer Jam bill, which featured performances from Iggy Azalea, the Roots, Wiz Khalifa, as well as such New York acts as Nas, 50 Cent and Nicki Minaj.
“It’s just a sloppy presentation of the art form, the worst presentation known to man,” D explained. “It’s negligent. There needs to be a greater representation of the culture and the community on that radio station.”

Chuck D has been blasting Hot 97 regarding this year’s Summer Jam since last week. On June 1, he posted a picture of himself showcasing a look that he says he has when he thinks about New York radio station Hot 97’s impact on Rap.
