Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 04/27/2014

Iggy Azalea enters the chart with "The New Classic," Future lands with "Honest" and Pharrell's "G I R L" keeps him in the Top 5.

This week, Iggy Azalea and Future enter the Billboard Top 200 albums chart with The New Classic and Honest, respectively. Meanwhile, Pharrell holds on to a Top 5 slot on the chart with his most recent album, G  I  R  L.

Future's Honest Effort Lands At #2

Future's Honest landed in the #2 spot and sold 53,352 units in its first week. Honest earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "While he doesn’t completely remedy the flaws that held back Pluto, 'Future Hendrix' has incrementally improved," HipHopDX says in its review. "He’s still plagued by bouts of lazy writing and the inclusion of older songs such as 'Karate Chop,' 'Sh!t' and 'Honest' have the unintended effect of making the project feel stale at times. 'Move That Dope' and 'Benz Friendz' may contend for two of 2013’s best collaborations, and having focused assists from Pusha T, Pharrell and Andre 3000 don’t hurt. As a soloist, Future is learning to play to his strengths. No one realistically expects Future to make the type of leap Three Stacks did between Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and ATLiens. But if he expounds on the type of substance he hints at on 'Special,' his album cuts will be as equally potent as his singles. For now, he’s returned with a slightly updated, less flawed version of 2012’s Pluto. It’s not the classic balance of style and substance ushered in by the Dungeon Family’s first generation. But it does help further the argument that both elements aren’t mutually exclusive."

Iggy Azalea's The New Classic Debuts At #3

Iggy Azalea took the #3 spot this week by selling 52,392 copies of her The New Classic album. The project earned a 2.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "The New Classic is a musical throne upon which the new blonde princess of Pop can rest her ample posterior," HipHopDX says in its review. "As Rap and Pop synergize again—yet this time without significantly embarrassing results—it opens the gate for Iggy Azalea to have an opportunity to shine. Sometimes, when Pop marketing and urban music perfectly commingle, we get Michael Jackson’s Thriller. In other cases, Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic aims high, but ultimately falls flat."

Pharrell's G  I  R  L Remains In Top 5

Pharrell's G I R L remains in the Top 5 this week, a placement it earned by selling 21,107 units to be this week's #4 album on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart.  P's G  I  R  L dropped from last week's sales by 36 percent. The effort sold 32,858 units last week. Overall, Pharrell has sold 325,483 copies of G  I  R  L in eight weeks of availability.

"Kendrick did well considering what he had and the climate of hip-hop sales now. Only three rappers now are selling more than him" What he had was the Interscope power machine behind him, tons of hype from his indie album, and Dre as his mentor. He should have done better, and the only reason he did was cause not many big albums came out.

    • Anonymous

So answer me this; how come French Montana and other rappers not named Eminem and Kendrick who have the Interscope machine behind them tanked hard with their albums? How come Meek Mill didn't even sell 400K of his debut album despite tons of hype from his mixtapes? How come J Cole didn't get a platinum album despite having Jay Z as a mentor?

    • Anonymous

Again, hype doesn't translate to sales and having Interscope and Dre on your side doesn't guarantee big numbers. K-Dot did well and doesn't need to do better. Besides, that last sentence is a lie. You're digging yourself an even deeper hole with your strawman arguments.

  • Anonymous

"Why can't rik rozz go 1x platinum just one time, drake and kendrick can do it" Cause his music is too dangerous.

  • Anonymous

Will we be saying that Iggy is most controversial, or hyped up from either her skin color or sex? Or will people just come to terms that talent doesn't have a sex or race?

  • Bizzalls

UUMMMMMIs this the laziest week album sales article DX has ever written??? They stop at the number 46 album on the Billboard 200? Don't mention anything about Asher Roth even DROPPING an album. Don't mention anything about the Army Of The Pharaohs album. WTF is this weak ass shit?!

  • Anonymous

50 Cent may be corny as fuck and a complete clown but PLEASE give the nigga credit for targeting white nerds to fatten his pockets, that nigga is exploiting the weakest of the weak and fucking white Hollywood bitches while he alas them Crakkers in his music so give that nigga credit!

"Most artists can't automatically go double platinum" Drake and Eminem do. Why can't Kdot?

  • Anonymous

Why would Ross be at 1.2 when he's never sold anywhere near a mill in his career? Think before typing.

Help me get Masterplan to go platinum, and I'll hook errebody up wit a free meal voucher at yo local Wingstop.. BAWSE! I gots 2 have at least 1 platinum... BAWSE!

  • Anonymous

Ross debuted in 2006 and should've been plat by now

  • Anonymous

Point was Kendrick should be closer to 1.9-2 mill by now. All that hype and acclaim. Common called him the other day and said he was disappointed in Kdot's sales. Told him to step his game up.

    • Anonymous

More like Wale crawled to Mariah for relevance. K-Dot is definitely not ignored if he's still appearing on people's songs.

    • Anonymous

Meanwhile Mariah Carey crawled over to wale for relevance while K Dot and Tony Yayo get ignored.

    • Anonymous

It's not 2002, Quoteboy. Most artists can't automatically go double platinum.

    • Anonymous

And your point was stupid and is full of bullshit and logic holes. Hype and acclaim doesn't guarantee big sales. Kendrick did well considering what he had and the climate of hip-hop sales now. Only three rappers now are selling more than him. You're the only one disappointed in his numbers while everyone else, Common & Interscope included, are satisfied by his sales.

Ross should be at 1.2 million by now but he's at 320k

Funny story. My client, Rick Ross, and I were close to signing the Iggy Azalea to Maybach Music Group. One day, Ross called up Iggy to offer her a 3.5 million contract and a chance to operate his own label; it was supposed to be called White Boomerang Records. While hanging out our studio, Iggy recorded a song entitled "This Is Chess, Not Checkers", a diss record directed towards mocking 50 Cent's "This Is Murder, Not Music". It was close to becoming the #1 song on Itunes, but unfortunately, we decided in everyone's best intrests to shelve it when the Iggy ultimately decided to sign with Grand Hustle.

What happened to Nas? Only he lasted 1 week? The time has come for Nas to step back and make room for an up and coming legend. I'm talking about the magnificent and charming Rick Ross, ladies and gentlemen. I guarantee you that in 20 - 30 years, you'll still be playing Trilla or Teflon Don and so will your kids and grand kids. Nearly ever disc in Ross' discography is considered a hp hop classic. Maybe one day, hip hop will stop considering him a laughing stock and actually recognize him as one of the greats, like Redman, Jay Z, Big Daddy Kane, KRS 1, Cube, Ice T, Nas, etc, etc. etc #bawse

Unlike Future and Pharrell Williams, Rick Ross raps from his heart & soul. Ross is widely considered the husky, thugged out version of Drake only more gifted when it comes to lyricism.

  • Rozay O'Donnell

Ross winning against g unit and aftermath. K Dot and Dr Dre each have ZERO no. 1 albums while Ross has 6. K Dot will bomb next album while Dr Dre can't even get his out because of Jimmy. Whiteboy is the only person saving aftermath but he's pop so he don't count.

      Platinum is better than #1.

    • Anonymous

Platinum does not mean number 1 album.

    • John Ole

Umm Eminem is aftermath and his album is over Ross (scratches head) and Kendricks album went platinum so that makes one number one album. About Dre that's another story his album never coming out they probably going to release it when he take a dirt nap.

    I'm glad that bitch bricked

If you really want something original to add to your album collection, then I suggest you go cop that new Mastermind, available now in stores and on iTunes. It's truly a classic with no filler, no skits, all originality. Ross proves to us that he has a far greater penchant for picking beats than Nas'. Hopefully, when Ross reaches another couple decades in the game, he'll hire some up-and-coming producer to create "Port of Miami - 20 year anniversary", the shit will be an even bigger classic than it is today #bawse

  • DJ Khaled

I wanted to see what type of trees was growing in March project. What type of water Jay-Z was drinking.

  • YOUR BABY DADDIES DADDY

How are you a 'Mastermind' if you can't even go gold and you claim to be the best mc in the game? LOLLL.. I mean even new rappers like J Cole and K. Dot are selling me than this fat greazy, peazy headed bastid!

"Cole and Kendrick had white hipster girls singing on their albums so they appealed to a bigger audience." How does having white hipster girls help appeal to a bigger audience? The mainstream audience hates hipsters.

THERES ONLY 3 RAPPERS KENDRICK CANT OUTSELL IN 2014 WHAT A LOSER!!!

    • Anonymous

Cole only goes gold too, and Kendrick can't even outsell Drake or Eminem.

    • Rozay O'Donnell

FYI You dont necessarily need a platinum plaque to gain true success. Some of Rap's finest records remain gold (i.e. J Cole) He manages to do 200k - 300k every first week. Successful.

    • YOUR BABY DADDIES DADDY

Excuses!!! Ross has been out for a minute.. He should have a bigger following with all the so called hits he's dropped. The reason he doesn't is because he puts out the same garbage over and over.. All the songs sound the same.. He says the same garbage over and over.. it's okay man, you can still wake up to his poster on your wall..

Cole and Kendrick had white hipster girls singing on their albums so they appealed to a bigger audience.

  • YOUR BABY DADDIES DADDY

Ha Ha Ha ha.. "It's only so long fake thugs can pretend" I love that the fake, fat, wanna be Biggie MC is flopping.. All his talk and bragging and he can't go gold? He drops another single with Weezy (how original) and he still can't sell? LMMFAO!! Pathetic!!! I guess shining flashlights in a dudes ass only has but so long of a shelflife

  • LOL

LOL Look at Iggy pushing units!!!! Im sorry i dont give a fuck who you are or what you think but thats solid as fuck for her Props.

  • Anonymous

ross will max out at 355k that's about it

  • Chi-Ill

Does the scoreboard still saying that Ross is winning?! lol

    • Anonymous

Ross is not a flawless lyricist, he's the opposite.

    • Anonymous

he never was...he was just being an arrogant ass knowing he really scared of 50. pretending to be tough...

    • Anonymous

Who cares whether he's last or not? Ross is by far the most flawless lyricist in the rap game. He's earned whatever success he's garnered. Don't judge a man by the amount of albums that he has sold.

    • Anonymous

number 1 albums don't mean shit look at skate board p he moved more units than ross

    • YOUR BABY DADDIES DADDY

"5)was voted MTV's hottest emcee twice." What an accomplishment.. This has to be a 5 year old who just got a smartphone

    • YOUR BABY DADDIES DADDY

Looks like Anon is getting butthurt.. Awww, dont worry your favorite rapper will always have his night stick to fall back on when raps is tired of him

    • Anonymous

Rick Ross will always be a top tier rapper in the industry. Name another rapper who: 1)has 6 number one albums 2)wins a feud with a formerly famous Queens rapper. 3)crashes his whip into a building and come out unscathed 4)owns a multimillion dollar restaurant franchise 5)was voted MTV's hottest emcee twice. 6)cancels his shows because gang members have the gall to threaten him because they're afraid of the harm he'll bring them

    • YOUR BABY DADDIES DADDY

That fat clown is done! Says the same nonsense in every song.. it's about time people woke up
