Michael Rapaport "Concerned What Happened To Jazz Will Happen To Hip Hop"

Michael Rapaport: "This is Hip Hop. It's not Techno. It's not Electro. You have to keep that boom-bap spirit."

Michael Rapaport, who directed Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, recently spoke about his concerns regarding Hip Hop.

"I get concerned that what happened to Jazz music will happen to Hip Hop, where the only person you know about is Kenny G," Rapaport says in an interview with Complex.

"It's just garbage," Rapaport continues. "This is Hip Hop. It's not Techno. It's not Electro. It's gotta...You have to keep that boom-bap spirit. It has to be there. There has to be a balance between growth and keeping it grounded. I don't know. It's challenging. I always feel like I wish I could rhyme. I could be like the emcee coach. Hip Hop Phil Jackson. I would be like, 'Yo, that shit is wack. Don't do that.'"

Rapaport is promoting When The Garden was Eden, a documentary about the New York Knicks team of the 1970s. The film is part of ESPN's 30 For 30 series.

So, he's concerned that white people gonna jack rap from us just like they did with jazz???

  • Hip Hop head.

Everything changes and that's a good thing. If it didn't, rappers would still sound like Kurtis Blow rapping over disco breaks.

We need Kendrick Lamar like we need a remake to Battlefield Earth.

There's no boom bap without samples and there's no samples because major labels ain't gonna clear them no more when they see that keyboard music gets them bigger returns than sample based music ever could.

    • Steeelo

You don't need a sample to have a boom bap sound. Plenty of records from back in the day were boom bap joints and didn't have a sample per se.

    • Anonymous

plenty of cleared sample music out right now, you crazy if anything the labels want those samples because they own publishing rights too learn more about the game, stop theorizing off of a couple of sample lawsuits because a study will tell you Sony & Universal just got a whole bunch of new publishing to sell

You don't know what House is? House comes from Chicago. It gets its background from Disco but was popular among the black and latino communities and was big and pretty much an inclusive style of music that grew and now what we have today is electronic dance music which is just a jazzier version but the 80's of yesteryear was great when House came out. Also House and Juking/twerking/grinding go hand in hand because the Juke originated in Chicago.

I'm 39 years old and I still don't know the difference between techno, house, dance and electronica

My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My neighbour's sister has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do =================== WWW.WORKS12.COM ===================

good actor, i really like this guy

  • Anonymous

thats when you know hip hop fans of today are dumb they dont know who this guy is smh

  • Yessir

I agree hip-hop has become pretty watered down but it's more people just following what's paying the most money instead of doing it for the love. Let's not forget if it wasn't for electro music (to the troll who commented saying there's no such thing as electro, kill yourself) then hip-hop wouldn't have skyrocketed in popularity. Mr. Herbie Hancock at the Grammy's with his electro hit Rockit brought hip-hop to the mainstream with Grandmaster DST bringing scratching into suburban homes. But I digress all I'm saying is hip-hop has HEAVY roots in electro and disco and that's not the problem. It's lack of originality and money hungriness. And if anyone argues that Rockit isn't hip-hop a. I'm not gonna bother to reply and b. drink draino

  • WeirdIrishMan

Sweet jesus christ, Scarface was saying the exact same shit as this dude ages before this guy, and the amount of abuse he got in the comments was unreal, yet I see nothing but praise for what this dude has said. is it because this dude is white, and scarface is black? scarface has contributed to the culture, i don,t know who this dude is, maybe hes cool, I dunno. regardless, way too many racists, thin-skinned white people, and clueless people comment on this site

  • drake runs rap

who the fuck this guy and why the fuck do we care what he thinks. Drake is mastering hiphop before drake came to the hiphop scene hiphop was nothing just trash. Drake made hiphop relevent and cool with out drake the only people listening to hiphop is those nerdy ass niggas that have no hopes of getting pussy.

    • Young Guwop

Nigga you ride Drake dick so much ya ass should be pregnant. You Drake fanboys are so delusional.

    • Sweet Drizzy Drake

...pause. cuz I'm not gay...I'm happy, Okay.

    • Sweet Drizzy Drake

Sorry guys. I don't run anything but my mouth. Besides, I don't even consider myself to be a rapper. I love R&B... I just happen to rap. Really, 3-Stacks or Cee-Lo would eat me ass up if they wanted to. Ya dig. I only beef with rap legends[like Common or Jay-Z] to stay relevant. Now go watch Boondocks or Beats, Rhymes & Life or something:... Peace, Love & Grace

    • Sweet Drizzy Drake

...I mean, eat my ass... Yum!!!! get my point

    • Anonymous

  • HipHOpdx my dick

I agree with this bitch made mofo.

  • Anonymous

its the fans they accept the trash

    • Anonymous

I don't think it's accepting so much as realizing they don't control the content of music. It seems people want hip hop to return to the old days, but that's not going to happen.

    • Anonymous

and it ain't gonna change because they are happy to be pawns

  • mane

There are bitches like 2 Chainz in the game, who could give a fuck about art and skill. They're in it for the money like clowns, and you idiots buy that shit by a thousand. THAT is the real problem.

    • Say Word

Most of the cats on here have no idea what hip hop is or what it stands for....I said this before hip hop has always embraced the electronic sound, Afrika Bambata did it with Kraftwerks who were from Germany, Mannparish & Mantronix used that Euro sounds as well.... Cats give credit to things that are recycled...Kayne's shit was garbage but still sold units because he's pop not hip hop.... If your on the radio you are not hip hop sorry !!!!!!! Rappaport has always been apart of the culture...Check the movie Zebra Head !!!! Most blacks don't support hip hop anymore... Keep it 100 they like lil wayne, drake, 2 chains.... I'm black and all the shows that I go to that have black artists perform, the crowd is always 90-10 as far as white to black.... That is what Rappaport is talking about, jazz was a creative black artform that turned into kenny G playing in your local elevator.... Jazz, R&B & now hip all but destroyed by the man....

  • JUSROMAN

Michael Rapaport definitely gets a lifetime ghetto pass so to speak, because he is more animate about the history and preservation of the hip-hop culture than most black people that are in the industry. So big ups to you Mike!! Keep real Hip-Hop alive!!!

    • JUSROMAN

@Anonymous1- You missed the whole point dumb ass. People like you are the reason why REAL, I stress REAL, Hip-Hop is dam near non-existant. All you want to do is troll and aurgue. Nobody said anything negative about that stuipd ass shit that you wrote. So just do us all a favor and shut the hell up if you don't have anything constructive to say.

    • Anonymous

  • Doubl Negative

"...do it for white power Remy!"

WTF IS ELECTRO n TECHNO MUSIC?

  • Anonymous

already started being like Jazz, the culture vultures are here trying to rewrite history so it fits their existence, not to keep the integrity of the craft

  • Shamu

Doe B was the spirit of the new vision of the streets a real story of hip hop.

  • Anonymous

nothing wrong with synthesized music with an am... just dont call that hip hop. its disco.

    • Anonymous

Sorry to nitpick but do a little research on hip-hop history and you'll see it started with them chopping up disco records at parties. They'd spin it and mix in some drums or whatever on another album. Then a little later cats would emcee over it and that's where we got rapping. Hip-hop grew from other genres and that's why it was so popular so quick because of its accessibility

    • Anonymous

a lot of that music is the genesis of Hip Hop rookie what you're trying to say is artists are following the "what's hot" fad

  • Anonymous

Thank you for echoing Scarface and many others

  • Anonymous

This dude is smart. We need more white execs. Like him lol

    • Chris Meade

      Pretty much.

    • Anonymous

say the truth, once they decided to cater to suburb/white 14-29 yr olds the decline started that demographic has no connection or obligation at all to want to maintain the craft, it's a status quo thing to them and that's why you see the disrespect, disregard, theft, and mockery of it and it's the same thing that happened with Jazz, and look at how they abandoned that

    • Same war, different battle...

Word... ignorance is bliss, right? I've grown to not expect much from this generation. Can't tell 'em ish... A bunch of smart, dumb-asses. It's the era of the crack-babies, and the culture's starting to reflecting it.

  • anonymus

It needs a balance everything always goes from one extreme to the other in hip hop. We need MMG as much as much as we need Bootcamp click.

  • Young Guwop

He's correct and saying the same thing others have been saying the last few yrs.

  • anonymous

All the what I call "BRED" muthaphuckas don't know shit about hip hop. Rapaport knows his shit. Kids nowadays need to do their homework and realize that hip hop grew up on Vinyl and not a macbook.

  • Anonymous

this guy is like the white lord jamar when it comes to this rap shit, and i mean than in a good way.

  • Anonymous

Hes Right, Outside Influences Have Been Ruining Hip Hop Under The Guise Of "Experimentation"

  • decomzi

agree with this nigga. fuck that electro crap, it has no place in Hip-Hop. there are ways to advance a sound without incorporating wackness like EDM

  • Anonymous

Michael Rapaport is 100% right with this. Hip-Hop needs to stay away from EDM and all that crap. It's not Hip-Hop. All these hipster faggots wanna try and say that it's progressing Hip-Hop and all that bullshit when in reality it's diluting it and making it into something wack

  • tha OG

Fuck Michael rapaport!!!!bitch dont know shit
