Kelis recently addressed her relationship with former husband Nas during an interview with the New York Times. During the interview, Kelis was asked how Nas incorporated part of the singer’s wedding dress in his Life Is Good cover art

“It’s not even the dress,” she says. “The joke behind that is that it’s the slip to the petticoat to my dress. I think when I moved out I just left it. That’s all he had, poor thing.”

Kelis says she was warned that the slip would be in the cover art “two days before it was released.” When asked why, the singer replied that she has “all kinds of ideas of why, but I don’t really care.”

In the interview, the New York Times says the cover art likely conjured memories that the singer likely was “hoping was in the past,” but Kelis denies this. “Maybe for others,” she says, “but not for me. I don’t really listen to his music anyway.”

In July 2012, when Life Is Good was released, Nas spoke about the cover art’s concept and how it was presented to Kelis

“I think I told her about two weeks before it went out,” Nas said at the time. “Work was done. Two weeks before it went out. At first, she was like, ‘Are you dissing me?’ I was like, ‘Come on, man. We grown. There was a time when it was turmoil but I’m not trying to play you and just showing what people know. They know we split.’ The divorce was public. People knew about it.”

During that interview, Nas also addressed his relationship with the singer and how some criticized her for being unfairly criticized by some after the couple filed for divorce.

“Honey’s a good girl and she just caught a bad rap in the whole thing,” he said at the time. “It wasn’t fair though. I love people that ride with me, because people had to split sides. Her friends had to go with her, my friends… But at the end of the day, I think they were too harsh…It’s in a better place. It took a while to get there. Of course, you only see what the media put out there. We had some of the biggest divorce lawyers in L.A. It shouldn’t have happened like that. We didn’t know any better. I wanted to handle it outside of court, and when you’re dealing with divorce, sometimes and there’s a lot of anger and hurt, you don’t want to hear what the next person is saying. You just think that person is trying to take you down, so you go and get the best representation you can get. What we realized later, we didn’t have to go at it like that. We in a much better place, thank God. We’re in a much better place.”
