Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 3/30/2014

Pharrell Williams' "G I R L" rises to #5, YG's "My Krazy Life" drops to #7, and Rick Ross' "Mastermind" falls out of the Top 10.

Following appearances by three Hip Hop/R&B albums on last weeks’ Billboard 200 chart, Pharrell Williams’ G I R L and YG’s My Krazy Life were the only two Hip Hop/R&B projects in the Top 10 on the chart this week. Rick RossMastermind, an album executive produced by Puff Daddy, dropped out of the Top 10 to the #11 spot, while ScHoolboy Q’s third studio album, Oxymoron, dropped even further this week. Q’s album found itself at the #33 spot on this week’s Billboard 200 chart. And with its third week on the chart, Aloe Blacc’s Lift Your Spirit remains at the #19 spot with a little over 14,000 copies sold this week.

Pharrell Williams’ G I R L Climbs To #5

After falling to the #6 spot following the entrance of Compton rapper YG’s album, My Krazy Life, Pharrell’s G I R L has once again found itself in a Top 5 position on the Billboard 200 chart. The self-produced album from Pharrell sold 25,000 copies this week and managed to work its way to the #5 spot despite selling nearly 9,000 less copies than last week. With singles including “Happy” and “Marilyn Monroe,” G I R L is described in a HipHopDX review as boasting songs that are “very safe, barely scratching the surface of anything deep, personal or revealing.” The album received a 3.5 out of 5 in a HipHopDX review posted in early March.

YG’s My Krazy Life Falls To #7

Following a debut at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart last week with 61,000 copies solid in its first week, YG’s My Krazy Life has fallen to the #7 spot. With 23,000 copies sold this week, YG’s album moved nearly a third of what it sold during its first week of release.

Described by DJ Mustard as this generation’s The Chronic, My Krazy Life received a 3 out of 5 rating in its HipHopDX review and was referred to as “a well sequenced and cohesive package.” The album serves as YG’s debut studio album and includes guest appearances from a number of Hip Hop notables including Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and CTE World founder Jeezy.

Aloe Blacc Maintains #19 Spot, Rick Ross Falls Out Of The Top 10

With its fourth week on the Billboard 200 chart, Rick Ross’ Mastermind has fallen out of the Top 10 for the first time. The album sold 19,000 copies this week and as a result dropped to #11 on the chart. Last week, Mastermind clenched the #7 spot on the Billboard 200, a spot that’s now taken by YG’s My Krazy Life. In total, Rick Ross’ sixth studio album has sold approximately 275,000 copies.

One artist who managed to maintain their positioning on the Billboard 200 chart was Emanon wordsmith Aloe Blacc with his album, Lift Your Spirit. The rapper fell to the #19 spot on the chart last week and remains at #19 with 14,000 copies of Lift Your Spirit sold this week. A HipHopDX review from last month, in which the album received a 3 out of 5 rating states that Aloe Blacc’s Lift Your Spirit “showcases a wide range of influences,” but also “feels impersonal at times.”

"all the smart indies get major label distribution so they are in more stores and can sell more records which will make them more money because they cut out the major label for everything but the distribution" Roc Nation still falls under the Universal umbrella. No way Jay is going to use his own money, and that was my point. Roc Nation may be his entity, but he has people he answers to. Also, most indie artists can't convince corporations to buy a million copies of their album before release.

no where near GOLD....not even close. sold only 19,000 last week. out of the top 10....bu byee!! phat boy #AnimalAmbition" He almost shipped 500k copies though so its gold. It's even unlimited diamond if you consider a never ending supply of digital copies of mastermind.

    • Numbers Nerds.

Nerds love numbers, lol, if Millioanire rappers cared about Gold/Platinum as much as the nerds do then these Millionaire rappers would be buying digital copies of their own albums just to say they went Gold instead of buying Mansions and Maybachs.

Man the music Industry is Dead you can count on two across all genre's of music the artist that go platinum still. Its hard to go gold now. If music isn't dead the sales surely are. I understand now why HMV's are slowing dropping off one by one.

he not mad he happy as fuck gibbs is indie he made about 250k last week its not like he on a major its supply and demand he good its these major label artist that's hurting they gotta recoup pay managers pay other labels for artist features producers don't get paid on time major labels is the old way of putting out music if you hot enough you can do it yourself.

  • blackshun

rap music is going out of business - these sales are pathetic. it's a combination of the internet, label consolidation and dumbed down artists causing this. Even if a track is kinda hot why would you pay to hear someone pop a bunch of negative self-absorbed nonsense when you can just torrent it for free? the problem is these big corporations that own the labels have other more valuable interests that make more money keeping people ignorant and divided (banks, weapons, private jails, etc) than they would by selling artists who might have something worthwhile to say. until fans (especially those under 25) knowledge up, boycott major label artists and start supporting independent artists by buying their records the situation will not improve!

    • Anonymous

it ain't gonna happen because their newfound target demographic not only has disposable money, they have disposable mentalities don't ever forget that their "best" album lately, 'The Heist', took 2 years to be noticed! they were paying attention to Lil B, Kreayshawn, Odd Future, what the INTERNET PRESS was following (because many of them don't know where to even find underground music), all while that Macklemore album was sitting there getting no play an issue like that says they are even more dependent on what the labels present, WITH internet in their faces

"yeah next week only 11k no gold for masterflop damn all of 50 albums certified" Certified crap. Ross could quit tomorrow and it wouldn't change the fact he had a nice run. 6 albums. 3 compilations. Appeared on scores of songs.

not looking good for mmg when your boss cant go gold its a problem meek album flopped the 2nd one wont do any better. GUNPLAY album will never come out NEVER.

    • Anonymous

"1. Ross will go gold again. It's 50 who can't go gold." all of 50 albums certified he only has 1 gold album

    • Anonymous

"Even more pathetic when your former boss is now indie, releasing singles wildly to generate buzz, all for the end result of 40k 1st week come June" 40k actually would be good money wise he don't have a recording deal with the label they just press up copies and ship them what can they charge him 3 dollars a cd maybe less avg cd 15 dollars after tax and this is 50 he pays for his beats and features up front so any money made from the project is all his he cant lose but he will do more than 40k

    • Anonymous

"Even more pathetic when your former boss is now indie" uhm jay-z indie haha nothing but idiots online

    • Anonymous

"releasing singles wildly to generate buzz," Because he can and how else you suppose to get buzz by saying wildly your use to the major label set up where they beat you in the head and tell you months ahead about one single 50 indie he don't need majors telling him what to do all of ross major label videos for mastermind have been low budget trash he been pumpin devil was a lie up and jay didn't even do the video ross album did good for the first week but he has no singles out that's doing anything.

    • LMAO

"Even more pathetic when your former boss is now indie" Indie is doing things for yourself because you can afford to 50 is not like these other indie artist he don't have RECORDING CONTRACT with a indie record company he a DISTRIBUTION DEAL the indie you talking about is totally different haha game is indie so why he looking for a major deal as a recording artist he has a label but he cant afford to support his label.

    • Anonymous

meek album a hit? wtf DAMN how low can standards go these days lol 50 will do way more than 40k remember he is indie he has the bread to press up enough copies to sale they have to be SHIPPED not sold just like GFID shipped gold but really didn't go gold.

    • Anonymous

"1. Ross will go gold again. It's 50 who can't go gold." You got that backwards. It's Ross who won't go gold since the hype is dying down. "2. Meek's album is a hit, going no.2 with 175k sold opening week. Lloyd Banks, on the other hand, can't get one out since his last one bombed." Meek's album is a flop. "3. Gunplay will put out an album this year. Where's young buck's album at?" Where's the buzz? Gunplay got shelved.

    • Anonymous

40K is how much 50 will do in pre-order numbers.

    • Anonymous

40k is what 50 cent will do most opening week. If 50 cent beats out mastermind's opening weekend, I will give you $100. If 50 cent doesn't match that, you give me $100.

    • Anonymous

"releasing singles wildly to generate buzz," Is this supposed to be a bad thing?

    • Anonymous

"Doesn't matter. Where's young buck's album at? For all the shit you talk about gunplay, young buck is doing worse." Young Buck is younger than gunplay and has already released 2 albums and recently just got out of prison after 18 months. "Even more pathetic when your former boss is now indie, releasing singles wildly to generate buzz, all for the end result of 40k 1st week come June." I dunno mane, they got him headlining Summer Jam, gonna be a hot summer, 40k will probably be the pre-order numbers.

Things have never been better for MMG, Rozay just opened up about 7 MMG themed WingStops in the South at about 400K a pop with 1.5 million insurance on each one and their Champagne Belaire Ros is one of the fastest growing on the market. I know all this because I am the ultimate groupie. Rick Ross once let me hold his fries at Wingstop.

"I get it, people incorporate different sounds into their music to attract and appeal to different people from different demographics." Exactly, the less intelligent ones are just useless eaters and mindless consumers but there are a select few who dialogue about the culture, politics, and workings of the industry without and have no desire to make it a personalized intimate experience with an identity....dudes ain't that starved for attention. But yeah man it's not a difficult formula, you add a chick to a rap song and chicks start digging the song because they can relate and it appeals to them. You add a rapper to a chick song and all of a sudden the niggas want to listen; Nas did a Reggea album with Damian Marley and introduced Junior Gong to rap fans who didn't know him and vice versa, it didnt sell as well as JayZ doing a Rock collab with Linkin Park but then again Nas and Damians music didnt connect with white consumers as much as JayZ and Linkin Parks. If I wanted to attract white females to a project I would include white females, I wouldnt get Madonna or Adele I would get an average ass white female like Skylar, Pink, Fergie, or Hayley Williams....or better yet some folk chick like Anna Wiise from Sonnymoon who can give you that white hippie chick feel without the overt pop sentiments. Make sure you follow @Bugsyonthebeat & @ItzPOKA

We got a ugly ass white bitch on my esse homie song that nobody has ever heard of but the ugly white bitch sounds like a white bitch so white bitches be feeling that song and putting money in my homie pocket. We exploit weak white people by selling them music so we can fatten our pockets.

We control the minds of these white zombies, I can plant a seed in their weak little minds and they start "noticing" shit in our music. LMFAO, you can turn them gay, you can make them give people shout outs and even make them go on treasure hunts for worthless information. E-puppets.

I'm confident that he will have a major hit single this time. At the very least, it should outsell GKMC.

    • ^

I don't know about that. Unless he gets a huge hit single, I can't see that happening.

    • Anonymous

Im calling at least 650k1st week and 2 million total.

    • Anonymous

hell yeah if J Cole can sell 300k FW it shouldn't be a problem as long as he gets a white hipster to sing some backup vocals he should be platinum again for sure even though she can't even go halfway gold herself.

  • shimmyshimmyyo

october 22 2012 - april 4 2014... 1.226.000... if theres not dl leak.. the sales would be around 3 milion... But this is hoq it is.. If album is good people would buy,if album was total trash and fantasy stories it even didnt hit gold... this trap sound is boring,i mean if you on the east coast your sound cant sound southern and if you west you cant sound southern... We need someone who can hit the chart like the rappers do in 80s,90s and early 00s... like NWA,Dr.Dre,Snoop Dogg,2Pac,The Notorious BIG,Jay Z,DMX etc. we need some energy and true stories and originality... Theres some good dudes, but they cant rose to shine because they not have a right label and promotion... Peace to all you,be true be what you are, dont act if your a bad lier...

If JayZ was involve with signing Ross and Jeezy while he was one of the executive heads at Def Jam what does that have to do with their success as artists? Diddy got cool with Ross when he relocated to Miami but of I was Ross I'd keep that snake under close watch.

    • Anonymous

Wrong. Ross crawled to Def Jam and Jay Z, and Diddy is Ross' business partner.

Glad to see Aloe Blacc still on the charts. His single is really tearing shit up. Its good to see him getting other recognition for his work throughout his project as a whole. Ups to YG. Doing well. Gonna hit 120k I think. R.R= played out alter-ego/ Hope he hits 310k and not gold. Liked his work with Common and wale, though I don't like his shit at all really. Rise Of an Empire=throw aways. Doesn't show the the potential of many artists and lacks unity to me. GEEEH

Funny, weren't you just bragging last week about how she has 15 million YouTube views and featured on a #1 Dance album, and saying that "whites" see her name featured on Cole's album and it makes them buy it?

    • Anonymous

"One of the whites is so confused that it makes me giddy with excitement knowing that consumers of HipHop are this naive." your life sounds pathetic man. thats why you write so many long comments responding to geeks online. you're a geek just like them.

    • Anonymous

I get it, people incorporate different sounds into their music to attract and appeal to different people from different demographics.

    • Anonymous

"they think Amber Coffman is there for her "popularity" or her "fame", they are too ignorant to realize that she is there for her SOUND." Newsflash: Amber Coffman's SOUND isn't that popular. Do you see her songs anywhere on the Billboard charts? Do you hear her songs on the radio? Is she on any magazines? Is she on any award shows? NO. She's just an unknown indie act, not a pop star.

    • Anonymous

BruthaDee wrote half of a novel full of logic holes and nonsense.

    • Anonymous

One of the whites is so confused that it makes me giddy with excitement knowing that consumers of HipHop are this naive. Let me address my brothers on here: My brothers...what could ever be more "appealing" to white people than other white people? Is it an accident that Marshall Mathers has more white fans than any other Black rapper on the planet? We can manipulate these people with ease because they are entirely clueless or maybe they just enjoy a good marketing chat, they think Amber Coffman is there for her "popularity" or her "fame", they are too ignorant to realize that she is there for her SOUND. What could sound better to a white mans ear than the singing of a white woman? Music is about ingredients, look at Yeezus, that's some shit the average brother can't even listen to but white critics gave it Universal acclaim and said it was one of the best albums of the year.....ingredients Bruh, add a lil Daft Punk, add a little Rick Rubin, add a little Amber Coffman and white people like that SOUND. A lot of tricks can be used to get your music heard across different demographics and generate interest in other genres but in this era of dwindling sales it's important to appeal to white peoples ears if you want to brag about going platinum...and if you can't capture them with your music then use your image, ride a skateboard, play a guitar, date a white gal, use their slang, adopt their dress and mannerisms.....get money I can't be mad.

    • Anonymous

Nah son, you're still an idiot for thinking an Amber Coffman feature is more appealing to white audiences than features with Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, The Weeknd, Diddy, French Montana, Big Sea, etc.. all who sell more records, play bigger shows and have larger fan bases than Amber Coffman.

"Anonymous: i dont think weezy had any white features on the last couple of albums he released unless drake counts." Wayne had Shane Heyl rapping on his last album and Wayne modified his entire image with skateboards and guitars to appeal to white consumers. So ask yourself when was the last time a a straight up Black African American dropped a Gold/Platinum album that does not have a white artist feautured on it in the credits:

    • Anonymous

already said, Ross, Jeezy, Ludacris, Soulja Boy, I could go on but dont feel like it. DO you know who Shane Heyl is? He is not respected by anyone more people purposely didn't buy that album because he was on it.

"You're right. Ross compromised and worked with Lady Gaga to appeal to white skinned geeks." How much do you think jumping on a remix with R Kelly & Lady Gaga effected the sales of "MasterMind"? If that was Ross best attempt at crossing over into pop music territory then the fat boy will never be successful. If you want to appeal to white people then just add a white artist to your album that either has an Indie buzz or a pop base or a vagina.

How many of you White American rappers can drop a gold or platinum album without a black feature?

    • Anonymous

I know for a fact Eminem could drop an album with only two features from people like Skylar Grey and Nate Ruse and still go multi-platinum. How many Black people do you hear bumping Macklemore or Eminem and they still sell millions of copies digital and hard. But yeah to answer your question maybe 2 or 3 which is a lower percentage to Black rappers doing the same thing due to the fact that Blaxk rappers outnumber white ones in the mainstream 100-1.

    • Anonymous

theres only like 2 that sell and they both black features.

I would think you're way better off getting verses and features from some way more popular artists like The Weeknd, Jay-Z, Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Kanye West or Big Sean but that doesn't always work out for some artists so their fans will blame white people.

    • Anonymous

Plus, J Cole's audience is bigger than Amber's. If anything, this is her trying to gain a bigger audience with working with Cole.

    • Anonymous

you think dirty projects fans rushed out to buy J Cole's album because the singer from that band sang a chorus or background vocals on one of his songs?

    • Anonymous

yeah dude you're delusional. youtube views do not translate to record sales, especially through different genres like that.

    • Anonymous

You are still wrong, Bruthadee. Amber Coffman is unknown to the mainstream world. She has no hit songs, her fanbase is small. J Cole already has a big enough audience and has nothing to gain with working with this unknown indie chick. Power Trip featuring Miguel hit the Top 20 and went platinum and Crooked Smile with TLC made the Top 40 and went gold. There is no sounds that appeal to one race, no guests, and no formula.

    • Anonymous

J Cole knew what he was doing by putting Amber Coffman on his third single off his sophomore album "Born Sinner", he wanted some of her sound and some of her fans. Amber has approximately 35 million views not counting the 4.5 from the J. Cole song/video. In order for us to manipulate whites into buying our music we have to give them "sounds" that appeal to them and "guests" they can relate to.....50 Cent is the king of this formula.

    • ^

And fuck you, too. Background vocals don't count as features.
