Late last month, Los Angeles rapper Ty Dolla $ign released the Lupe Fiasco-assisted “Snitches” and according to the West Coast emcee, he has quite a few collaborations with Lupe lined up. While speaking with Fuse at South By Southwest this week, Ty revealed that he’s recorded five songs with Lupe, one of which will appear on his upcoming album, Free TC.

Ty also commended the Chicago lyricist on his ability to record an entire song, verses and hook, off the top of his head.

“I linked with Lupe through my homie Busy,” Ty said. “He works at Atlantic and he also works for Lupe’s project. That was probably like the fourth song we’ve done. But I got one for my album that’s like ‘Oh [shit].’ I got one on his album that’s like ‘woo.’ So, that one we were like ‘Let’s just do something and drop it for the people right now.’ So, I just made the beat real quick. He actually wrote the hook. I just sung it…He is amazing. He’s definitely now in my Top 5. He’ll get in the booth and just literally say the whole verse, the whole hook, and do a second verse just all off the top of the head. Then come back and just change a few words.”

In addition to Lupe, Ty says fellow California rapper Kendrick Lamar will also be featured on Free TC. Before speaking on his collab with K-Dot, Ty spoke on the significance of the title of his upcoming album, which he says was inspired by his brother who is currently in prison for murder.

“TC is my little brother. He’s locked up for murder,” he said. “Everybody in the hood knows he didn’t do it. You know. So, I’m gonna bring awareness to that…I’m definitely gonna try to like sell some records this time. You know what I mean? To free TC. That’s the whole purpose of it. So, I’m gonna give the people like a super quality album. And use that money and get him an incredible lawyer…So far, I like this song I got called ‘L.A.’ with Kendrick. It’s like equivalent to Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ ‘New York’ [‘Empire State Of Mind’]. You know what I mean? We made it ‘L.A.’”

During his interview with Fuse, Ty recalled meeting Snoop Dogg, Quincy Jones, and the late Tupac Shakur through his father who used to occasionally work with those at Death Row as a musician.
