Ice Cube Calls Macklemore's Grammy Win Over Kendrick Lamar "Typical"

Ice Cube says Hip Hop needs its own Hall Of Fame and discusses a "Ride Along" sequel.

During a recent interview, Ice Cube was asked about his take regarding 2014's Best Rap Album Grammy going to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' The Heist over Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d. city.

"It's typical," Ice Cube says in an interview with the Associated Press as published by Billboard. "It's the Grammys. What do you expect? But for them to pass up true skills for what could be fly-by-night success...I don't want to dis anybody, but seriously."

After this year's Grammys, Macklemore, who won 4 Grammys at the event, said he felt Kendrick Lamar deserved to win instead. Macklemore posted a text message conversation where he told Kendrick Lamar he felt the TDE star was "robbed." Macklemore also said that he and Ryan Lewis had an unfair advantage at the Grammys "due to race."

Ice Cube Says There Needs To Be A Hip Hop Hall Of Fame

Cube also discussed how he feels regarding N.W.A being overlooked as a nominee for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

"It sucks," Cube says. "But it's understandable. We really only had one album together. They had two albums as a group. I'm sure that groups that have been together longer can make a better argument. But this just lets you know how much we need a Hip Hop Hall of Fame of our own."

Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are reportedly working on an N.W.A biopic. Cube recently made comments regarding the film. He said he is pushing for one of his sons to play the role of Ice Cube in the film

Ice Cube Announces Ride Along Sequel

Ice Cube, who has also had success in the film industry, is also planning a Ride Along sequel, he says.

"When the studio saw the preview numbers [for Ride Along], they were excited, so we are in good shape," Cube says of the sequel. "It was something we weren't expecting, but we have a script and we might be ready to shoot in June or July. The film has also done well in Egypt and Lebanon. Hopefully we'll go to other territories, like hitting Australia with it."

Earlier this year, Ride Along was #1 at the box office for several consecutive weeks

Drake should have won against these 2.

Much like how you hate Rick Ross, and countless others.

  • Anonymous

It's not hate. I give most albums a chance. There was one song I liked, The Recipe, but other than that it didn't grab my attention.

  • Anonymous

"You're joking, right? Even you don't believe those lies." Then why didn't he win if his songs are all so great? Then ask yourself why your cheerleading this guy so hard. In the scope of debut albums, Good Kid is average at best. To be fair, so was Drake's. Only difference was Drake had more success, and people bought into it.

"You just described Wale's albums. Any album with songs like M.A.A.D City, Compton, Money Trees, Backseat Freestyle, Swimming Pools, BDKMV, etc. is far from boring." Wale's album was boring too, but Kendrick is overrated and you know it.

  • benben178

On the real as Curren$y said, "Who cares I'm platinum on the streets." Rewards don't mean anything for real anymore.

I'm going to cut through the bullshit and just tell yall' how this shit is: We say: fuck you, you're guests in our house and if you want to remain as our guests you'll shut the fuck up and play by our rules. You say: Thank you for allowing us into your house, we apologize for overstepping my boundaries, we will correct our behavior and play by your rules.

  • Dollface

No one should give a crap about this. Let them have their award, no one is out there bumping their stuff for real. Macklemore is alright and everything, but Kendrick is on another level and even Macklemore knows it. Look at him kissing up to Kendrick through text messages and shit, it's clear that even he acknowledges the fact that this was bullshit. Like I said though, award is just worthless material, all that matters it that Kendrick keeps doing his thing and getting paper.

    • Anonymous

for an outsider, an award will be a sign of success, they weren't there for the experience to have the knowledge, they have to trust the source of information as they read the h-i-s-t-o-r-y that's why one like Cube is calling for a HOF, the history needs to be preserved correctly and we won't have to worry about how they'll try to make it like Macklemore was the one, and Kendrick was some guy who was around don't be so quick to dismiss

What I learn most about white people from reading these mostly white comments, is that they have a massive superiority complex. They're very self righteous and think they're somehow "above" the things a lot of 'black people' choose to rap about. "How dare they talk about the struggles they had to deal with at the hands of white people, how dare they rap from the perspective a person from a white created ghetto, how dare they rap about having a better life after being deprived of anything and everything their whole lives. They should act like hipsters or pick up a dictionary and use big words to impress us. We control this shit and we should dictate what they do, even though they invented and we're just guests" lol That's what you guys sound like to me. White people have forgotten that they're just guests in our house. They have gotten WAAYYYY to bold and comfortable with this shit, look at these comments. They're no longer just buying rappers music for what it is, or accepting it... They actually think they can control it. They feel entitled to our music, as if it's the natural order of the world for them to take what we have. It's kind of unbelievable to me!!

    • Anonymous

Goddamn this nigga Nick T went IN

    • Anonymous

we tried, we tried hard but the reality is capitalism doesn't require integrity

    • Agreed

Co-sign 100%!! The mouthy ones on these boards tend to have a very holier than thou complex as well like "How dare you have an opinion in opposition to mine & back it up with facts". Then when they've been called on bullshit they try to harp on petty shit like grammar or set up straw man arguments in an attempt to distract from the real argument at hand, which by then they're losing. It just goes to show there are alot of half-Steppers & Culture Vultures in Hip-Hop these days. Worst part is we only got ourselves to blame, we should have nipped it at the bud and thrown these phoney ass bitches out the fucking art form instead handing out passes like informational pamphlets!

  • Heat357

The funny part is Ice Cube saying a rapper has "True skills" 10 years ago we all thought rapping was a difficult task. Now every rap fan over the age of 16 has made cd's on their computers and everyone knows its super easy, It just takes funding... If you can become noticed through social media and have the funds to back it you'll get a record deal. Album sales and grammy nominations will be a direct reflection of your label. If you're label knows how to build grammy artists you just might get one. Kendrick is on a dying label. The only reason that label had any success was because of blue eyes. And Ems time is over so Aftermath falls with him. Macklemore actually went Indy. so for him to win a grammy he must be a talented businessman and a smart player. Kendrick just did what Dre and jimmy told him to do.

    • Heat357

Word play is easy. Most 12 year olds can string together a compound syllable rhyme. Good flow? every rap has a good flow.... Rapping is without a doubt the easiest form of music out there

    • benben178

I don't know about all that easy stuff man. You might be talking about stringing some words together is easy but when you look at it. It's complex you gotta have a good flow and dope word play or you just gotta be a hype type of artist. That's why rapping is difficult.

Grammys don't mean shit to me, a white persons opinion on Black cultural artforms means nothing to be and most times their opinion will help you know what not to listen to.

  • Sensaye Sixkiller

The fact that all of you even lend credence to The Grammy's as a legit barometer of how good an artist is is ridiculous. Look at the list of motherfuckers that have won grammys over the years. Hip-Hop is judged by Hip-Hop listeners and artists, who don't give a flying fuck about the Grammys. If your shit is even in contention for a grammy then your album was too soft and safe, straight up. It's just like Movies that are made specifically to win an Oscar, they're gonna cater to the wide audience and that alone compromises the quality of the art. Peace.

  • Anonymous

None of the albums nominated for grammys deserved to be nominated, but as someone who listened to all of them, I can honestly say, they all were better than Macklemore.

"Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City at least told a complete choerent narrative in an era when nobody is doing concept albums" Don't pretend his story was original in any way. There were a few ok songs, but for the most part it was a boring album. Macklemore wasn't much better, but from a hustling standpoint, and judging how his singles did, he easily deserved to win. That's what the grammys represent. Success, and while Kendrick had success, it wasn't to the degree Mack's was.

    • BACARDI

      You just described Marshall Mathers.

For Ice Cube to call Macklemore's Grammy "typical" is typical. Who would have thought Ice Cube would want the kid from Compton to win?

  • poop

I don't see why everyone thinks Macklemore is "fly by night success" the dude took 4 years to make his album. If anything I'm anticipating Macks next album slightly more than Kendricks because of the surprise factor Macklemore brings. Kendricks album might've have had the doper tracks on the radio, but Macklemore made real music, with real meaning; not to say Kendrick didnt aswell, but Macklemores album didnt sound like every other hip-hop album out now, and that is where the appeal for him came from.

    • Anonymous

Yea it just sounded like every other Pop album right now trying to sound like a Hip-Hop album. Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City at least told a complete choerent narrative in an era when nobody is doing concept albums & telling stories anymore. The Heist is a mediocre album at best with several songs that were popular almost exclusively amongst the pop crowd. GKMC was practically a film on wax, a compelling story that could be played from beginning to end without skipping, and single handedly lit a fire under Hip-Hop and got things interesting again. If that isn't superior music with real meaning then I don't know what is. Culture>Everything

  • COME_ON_SON

I still can't get over that bullshit heist album beating GKMC. Kendrick clearly should have won it an in my mind deserves it more. But i guess Wacklemore is safer for the suits to accept. The grammies are seriously outdated when it comes to rap they still can't tell what's a good rap album from a horrible rap album.

No where in Cube's comments does he mention Maclelmore's ethnicity. As usual, the racist bigots who frequent this site to unleash their venomous, uninformed opinions do so without reading or understanding the article. These assholes aren't even genuine hip-hop fans, they're just looking for pictures of Mackelmore and Eminem to jack off to, and spew bile about a culture they have no connection to. Mr. Manson's Helter Skelter prophecy seems to be edging forward, but these imancipated bastards can't step to Brothers in person, so all of their pent-up rage and hatred manifests itself in the vile, cowardly missives that are a daily accurance on DX. Keep speaking the truth Cube, never let poltical correctness dictate your thoughts, unfortunately though, Ride Along may be a success in the States and a few other territorities, but there's no chance in hell it's gonna make a penny in the most important non-domestic territory - Asia. They hate us just as much as the whites.

  • DETROIT SLIM

Wacklemore shoulda won for a pop album or sumthin. All that shit him and his homo sidekick make is radio pop music. Just cause hes rhymin words don't make it hiphop. Lolryan lewis aint no hiphop or rap producer. Aint no niggas tryin to collab with him or getting a beat from him

  • DETROIT SLIM

I love cube but shit, if you had a rap or hiphop hall of fame, the cutoff would be like 5 years ago. Everybody is garbage now. What, you gonna be honoring these weak ass niggas like'rich homie' or 'future' or 'gucci' sheeeit lol

  • Dvillan

Wacklemore and Cryan Lewshit are distributed thru ADA, which is Warner Bros' indie distribution arm. When "The Heist" first came out it didn't pop until "Thrift Shop" started to get some burn; then after that, it became strictly The Machine from Warner Bros', which is why a supposed 'indie' went platinum. If this shit had been released on say eOne, you would have never heard anything else after Thrift Shop.

  • titooo7

I'm so tired about this Macklemore and Grammy's thing. Only mainstream artists care about it.

  • Anonymous

Skills and dropping a classic album don't mean shit to the Grammys, they see a white guy making a Gay rap song and have to reward him, that's just how shit is and it will never change.

    • Anonymous

True, just looked it up and Grammy's solely nomimate and award off popularity in evrey genre of music. they've been doing this for decades and don't plan on changing after many artists have opposed, boycotted and tried to have the masses ban the award show. So I guesss if you watch the show just expect the most popular artist in the country to win, nuff said.

    • Anonymous

Nigga U lost. Grow up its deeper than that. the Grammy's r off popularity, not skills, classic albums or skin color. it's a big popularity contest in the music industry, who do people like more, who gets more radio spins, etc. when will people realize!!! smh

macklemore is blatantly telling you lemmings that there is a "white factor" and you still can't see it "white factor" you ask? if talib Kweli did "The Heist" y'all would have ignored it, probably 40k tops, and the gay song would have got minimal play, macklemore does it and, well you see y'all didn't make that album hot, warner brothers money did, y'all ignored it for almost 2 years because many, many, of you are not Hip Hop fans that look for music, you're popular culture followers you don't even know many of macklemore's songs are repetitive topics, like vintage clothing, "can't hold me back/no stopping us now", a car and cruising "rollin' in my 64...", you declare he's making "social change" music we've even seen this before, the popular culture choice gets the nod while the longevity mainstay gets overlooked why should we believe anything you clowns say, especially when y'all were here saying "we took over, rap is ours!" because macklemore was selling and eminem was selling "white factor" is a part of your lives, of course you don't wish to discuss it

    • Skool 4 Klownz

True. That was the realest comment I seen in a while. The 3rd eye sees through the bullshit.

    • Anonymous

the idiot is the one who doesn't wish to touch on the real topic, for you are scared to learn some truths about yourself so you point to petty things, like a grammatical error to keep yourself right the truth of it is that Eminem has spoken about the "white factor", he wouldn't have sold as much if he was white, macklemore said just above that "he and Ryan Lewis had an unfair advantage at the Grammys "due to race." someone here even said "I'm sorry, I didn't realize that the Grammy committee was supposed to appeal to you before they decided on the award." when that same person knows nothing about who's on the board or what they feel about all music. y'all don't realize how deeply programmed you are, and it started in your very household, advocating the "white factor" talk to me when you're ready to have an adult discussion donnis mac

Remember when hiphop was good, and the entire hiphop community was salty that the Grammys didn't acknowledge hiphop? Then they sold out the artform to conform and became a part of the Grammys? Now they're bitching...pathetic. My whole life was molded and revolved around hiphop, and shamefully I'm almost embarrassed at this point. The Grammys are for popular music, Macklemore had more single and more exposure to popular music, which is why he won

  • fucku!!!

Im not hatin on Mack. I just dont fuck with him. I tried to give his album a spin or two and just didnt vibe with it. He won cause he's white and had super successful singles. where i give him props is that he did all of this independently, which is awesome BTW, but to say he deserved it over Kendrick is false

    • YouStupidFuck

Your argument for why Kendrick should have won over Macklemore is because YOU liked it better. I'm sorry, I didn't realize that the Grammy committee was supposed to appeal to you before they decided on the award. Newsflash shit head, not everyone has the same taste in/opinion of music as you.

  • Anonymous

man fuck right off with this shit already, im a fan of both and macklemores album won because it had a CULTURAL IMPACT, meaning it wasnt SELF ABSORBED.. you people need to wake up and realize music is more than rockin a mic..

    • fuccya

How bout some balance, as a fan of none of them, bet we wont be even hearing about these two. Theres still good rappers to come, tricks to get overhyped and more lame radiofriendly fucks to win irrelevant (to hiphopheads) grammies. So whatever.

    • Anonymous

Bigger cultural impact my ass. He won because corporate run radio found a rapper that had a 'safe' look & sound to him & had several songs they could play out the ass that wouldn't ruffle anybody's feathers. In 5 years nobody will talking about this album other than the fact it snubbed GKMC, I'm willing to bet in 5 years will be still talking about Kendrick though. Mass appeal doesn't equal cultural significance "Pop culture bleaches the soul of everything it co-opts" remember that.

It's obvious that most of Macklemore's naysayers haven't even taken the time to check out his music. This guy is no fly-by-night success - He's been grinding and perfecting his craft for over a decade and he FINALLY broke through and gained commercial success. I swear Rap fans are ignorant as fuck.

  • Yawn

It's 2014, let's stop playing the race card. Those who play the race card are just perpetuating their own hatred/stereotyping. Both albums were great, but Macklemore had more and bigger hits. Cultural impact trumps all. That was the difference, plain and simple.

    • Ant

I have listened to it. And it just is not as good as Kendrick Lamar album. Ryan Lewis is a pretty good producer and Macklemore does have some skill. It truly is a soild cd , but it is not the best of the year.

Man, you can't call somebody a fly by night success just because of their singles. Macklemore has BEEN spitting that conscious shit for a minute now. Macklemore may have won the grammys' because he's white and the panel doesn't know shit, but that doesn't mean that people should judge him BECAUSE he's white. Judge based on the skills and the content.
