Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 3/9/2014

Rick Ross's "Mastermind" and Pharrell's "G I R L" appear as the top albums on this week's chart with ScHoolboy Q's "Oxymoron" dropping from last week's #1 position.

This week, Rick Ross and Pharrell hit the top of the Billboard Top 200 albums chart with Mastermind and G  I  R  L, respectively. The two albums, which have been anticipated by many of the artists' fans, make their first week impressions with the #1 and #2 slots. Meanwhile, ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron takes a drop in sales in its second week, with the Top Dawg Ent. rapper's sales figures decreasing by 78 percent.

Rick Ross's Mastermind Strikes At #1

Rick Ross's Mastermind appears as the #1 album on this week's chart. The project sold 179,215 copies its first week of availability. Recently, the album earned a 3 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "There isn’t anything really compelling about Rick Ross’s fictional tale anymore," HipHopDX said of the album. "It has become stale. There is no real wiggle room for his kingpin fallacy. There’s only one angle of interest left to explore: the truth. 'The truth will set you free, son. The truth will set you free,' executive producer Sean 'Diddy' Combs shouts smugly on 'Nothing,' assumedly at opposing rappers pretending to be something they’re not. How ironic. Ross could’ve used that kind of advice himself years ago. Perhaps he’ll take heed before the next mastering."

Pharrell's G  I  R  L Enters Charts At #2

Pharrell's G  I  R  L enters the chart this week at #2. The project sold 112,534 units in its first week of availability. The disc, which features the hit single "Happy," earned a 3.5 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. "While G  I  R  L is too surface-level at times, it hits the target it’s aimed for," HipHopDX said of this release. "Pharrell wants summertime airplay, and any of these songs could survive on the radio. It’s also a nice tribute to feminine vigor, adding another notch to Pharrell’s ever-growing list of achievements. He has plenty to be happy about these days."

ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron Drops To #8

ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron appears as the #8 album on this week's chart. In its second week, the album sold 30,168 copies, a 78 percent decrease from last week's 138,630 units sold. Overall, Oxymoron has sold 169,118 copies. Yesterday (March 11), ScHoolboy Q spoke about his current deal with Aftermath Entertainment/Top Dawg Ent. “I already did wrong by signing a rap contract,” ScHoolboy Q said. “I’m not talking about TDE, but how we ventured off with the majors. I wish we would have still stayed indie. I don’t care about being on like 100 radios or shit like that. I love Interscope, but I wish I could have just stayed with TDE.”

Just bought #MasterMind today. Listened to it top to bottom. Its not Rozay's best Album (Deeper than Rap,Teflon Don were his best n are in my personal Classics->Port of Miami? had some classic tracks tho however those two albums were Rozay's Best-my opinion)But the album is dope. The album flowed from start to finish.Exceptional Tracks were Rich is Gangsta, Nobody, Devil is a Lie, Mafia Music 3, What a Shame, and Blk n Wht. The Album could hv done with more productions from the Usual suspects->Cool n Dre, The Inkredibles, Justice League, The Runners,DJ Toomp, JR Rotem...u know the usual producers whose productions work well to Rozay's Rapping style.

He failed to deliver and had to resort to remaking old Biggie and ODB songs because he's not creative enough to come with some original ideas to make his own timeless classic records." Ross has MMG, Diddy has Bad Boy and JayZ has Roc Nation while Kendrick and Schoolboy Q are label mates on TDE/Interscope, they are also a part of the collective known as Black Hippy. Dont be envious because a Gold selling rapper is capable of getting Platinum artists to feature on his #1 album. Nobody remade a Ol Dirty Bastard song you snow dog they used the phrase on an Ol Dirty Bastard song. Rozay has a catalog with 200 songs and none of them are remakes so kill the no creativity mess.

Mainly about his struggles after haters tried to shoot him. Tha rally fucksy up. J Cole hasn't gone platinum either. Don' act like he's jay z.

When I think about platinum I think about YMCMB and when I think about Gold I thi k about J.Cole, and Lupe Fiasco.

    • Anonymous

J Cole came out in like 2011 while Ross been out since 2006 when all his peers were still going plat. No one tried to shoot Ross, not one bullet hit the car, no one has aim that bad... it was a warning or a publicity stunt, we will never know.

    • Anonymous

No, he doesn't. Ross mainly talks about drug-lord fantasies.

  • Jolly Rancher

LOL, Ross is such a troll whenever he wins they get so mad that I just sit back and watch them pound their keyboards and say Def Jam copped all his records or Eminem sold more or 180K is a flop after a year where Kanye and Wayne failed to go Platinum for the first time in their careers blah blah blah...... It's so fun to watch the 50 Stan's try to downplay his moves it's like the entire industry conspires to torture the 50 Stan's by embracing Ross and co-signing him. I love Rap.

he said a police officer was more respectable than a c.o., not that a cop wasnt respectable. theres nothing respectable about having an honest job and lying about it to convince people you were actually a criminal when you weren't one and actually held down a regular job.

White bitches online be so clueless and fucked off in the head that one wrote that somehow Police and CO jobs are not "respectable"....these bitches brains been scrambled by rap songs. I know a C.O. is less respectable than a cop. A C.O. requires similar training to a cop but less intelligence and physical abilities. Ross was studying criminal justice with dreams of becoming a police officer but couldn't pass the physical test.

OMG, J Cole's got the bigger shlong here. I so want to see what his dick is like. It's bigger than Ross's dick. J Cole's may taste like shit while Ross's taste nice but at least J Cole's is bigger. I feel the need to talk about J Cole all the time.

J Cole is a hip-hop artist like Ross and Born Sinner's sales for a hip-hop album are good. Cole never claimed to be a gangster at all, he just talks about his life while Ross always claims to be a gangster when he never experienced that life.

The 50 Dickrider never uses logic he just spews half-truths in order to get a response he thinks being a boss is about record sales and not about running a label of artists, J Cole is signed to another rapper he is not a boss yet.

    • Anonymous

Still terrible for a pop rap album. 500k is basically platinum for gangster rap.

    • Anonymous

"J Cole's album sales fell off the cliff though after the 1st week while ross has decent legs" Actually J Cole 84k second week selling more than Yeezus, he's at over 600k which is more than Rick Ross can say about his last release!

    • Anonymous

J Cole's album sales fell off the cliff though after the 1st week while ross has decent legs. Also, Ross is hiphop while J Cole is bitchmade. J Cole acts like a gangster yet never experienced that life unlike ross.

J Cole don't claim to be the biggest boss and on top of the rap game, its funny how he sold so much more. Being humble and real goes a long way, apparently further than big name friendships.

    • Paul Wall.

@Anon5 J Coles music is more mainstream and I like his music and production he isnt going to give you the club bangers and street anthems but he makes thoughtful music you can zone out to with your DreBeats. The guy above seems jealous that Jeezy fucks with Ross.

    • Anonymous

J Cole hasn't gone platinum either. Ross has nothing to prove at this point since he isn't a crossover artist. J Cole does since he's signed to jay z.

    • Anonymous

J Cole is more mainstream than Rick Ross? SUREE!!!! Whatever you gotta tell yourself. Truth is people ain't fucking with that fraud like that whether the album is good or not. That's why he consistently tops out at gold.

    • Anonymous

I love how Ross trolls the 50 Dickriders with his success, they are so disturbed that he gets high profile features and support from his friends that they feel the need to compare him to J Cole who is much more mainstream. Ross has never been a big seller he is not a crossover artist but he is a consistent artist.

    • Anonymous

180k is amazing for a studio gangster who never lived any of his raps.

    • Anonymous

You copied and pasted that j cole bullshit again. Features don't mean shit anymore since people can buy them individually. Executive producers aren't selling points. 180k is a good sales total for a gangster rapper. 290k for a bitchmade rapper like j cole is a flop since he sold out. Get some new material instead of resorting to j cole bitch.

    • Anonymous

I dont listen to 50 Cent but 180 for Rick Ross, who's supposed to be one of the biggest artists in the game is not very good. Look at all those features he had (Jay-Z, Kanye, Lil Wayne), the hype of re-uniting with Jeezy, Diddy backing him and executive producing the album and he still sold 120k less than J Cole first week who had half the promo and features!

You know what I've noticed. The people who see right through this kind of music are usually self-aware, have some common sense and get tired of the same formula. The people that eat this stuff up usually say one of two things "This bangs" "This goes hard" If that's all it takes, for a song to sound "tough" to impress you, or move you, then I feel sorry for you. I can't judge you or people like you since I don't know you, but I can make a reasonable assumption that authenticity and lyricsm doesn't mean shit to the average, so called "hip-hop" fan out there today that seems to worship money, lies and the sound of the beat over everything else.

The foundation of rap music is the damn MUSIC, if you want lyrics so bad then go listen to spoken word poetry, all that stupid talk about "lies" is just a manifestation of your warped views on art because you are too stupid to understand that lyrics are just a form of poetry open to the imagination of the creator and the listener, stop looking for truth in Raps and just enjoy the poetry. Let the club people enjoy their 2-Chainz and you enjoy your Aesop Rock.

Ive never seen a rapper benefit from production and features more then Rick Ross but thats just me. All I hear is "he picks great beats", "he picks good features", "this bumps in my trunk".

  • Rick Ross

Just goes to show these niggas how easy it is when you got the right connections. See what happens when you hate on a nigga who had a respectable job in the past, but ACTUALLY sold drugs afterwards because the pay wasn't cutting it? Maybe the next time you nerds decide to do research on me, get your facts straight. Just because I grew up in the suburbs don't mean you know EVERYTHING.

"I could sit here and express my hatred for 50 because he beat on a woman but what does that have to do with beats and rhymes?" I would bet money this is the negro writing essays about how 50 is a crab on every one of his articles.

I know DX page is just full of people with hate in their heart, but with the current enviorment, and a lack of hits, Ross's album sales are pretty god damn good. Which leads to the question: how is his fanbase that loyal? Is the Jay-Z-in-a-fat-suit routine actually working?

No one even talkng about 50 we talkng about how it may or may not have taken Ross 9 years to go platinum once and the only proof that it happened it from a video from Ross himself that also claimed Deeper than Rap was gold.. LOL Deeper than Rap did go gold. POM went platinum. The video's proof. Let's not forget how he put out a promo video for Mastermind that showed a clip of him in 2003 getting interviewed and he put 1999 on the screen to trick his fans. That's because it WAS in 1999 dumbass.

for someone as big as ross and someone who has the backing of the entire industry bloggers websites etc and is put in our faces 24/7 that is terrible, no excuses. you go on worldstar all his videos are at the top you go on rapradar its like his own fansite he got elliott wilson Shaheem Reid and more all promoting him on twitter along with all his friends khaled etc and all the promo videos interviews stories etc you would expect a lot more. but in the real world people dont really like or respect this guy so they aren't gonna give him their money

  • Rozay O'Donnell

Ross has the nicest boobs in rap. I love the beats he picks. If you ever see him live you would be mesmerized by the way his breasts bounce all over the place alone to the songs. I think of it as art.

  • Huli

His sales numbers are decent nothin spectacular but a #1 album is a #1 album anybody tryna downplay that is hatin .. In terms of Rick Ross's relevancy tho its shows that alot of people dont buy into him no matter how much Def Jam promotes his projects ... He had wayy more promotion then Q Wale Cole etc but his numbers are never anything to go crazy over .. Its certainly not enough for all the boss shit Rick Ross talks but that's a different story ..... I like him but i wish they would stop tryna make him into a rap superstar when he's clearly not one

  • DA BIG HOMIE

About 3 years ago, a very well dressed Asian man (not the MIT geek types), some fucking bushido warrior type smacked his bitch a few times in the street and jacked her up in a busy clubbing section of my city. Now, I learnt a long time ago, 99.99999.....% of the time, it's the woman's fault. All of a sudden, some white liberal mangina decides to get off his bike after drinking his Starbuck's faggachino and "intervene" on behalf of this bitch. Rightly so, this man gets his ass beat to the ground. But that's not even the fun part, the police were called by all of the politically correct club-goers and shocked white liberal women, that "only" one man came to that Americanized Asian cunt's rescue or attempted rescue. When the police show, the guy's gf emphatically denies he ever hit her, saying he did nothing wrong, in addition to saying this white hipster attacked her man! Only the witnesses testified on behalf of the beta, but let this be a lesson, a bitch will never fucking come to your aid! Even if you defended her unto death, she'd never, ever fuck you if she smelled weakness. In addition to the beta hipster mangina getting his ass bloodly beat, he summarily went home with no pussy, while the Asian guy probably got the best pussy of his life. Hell he probably conceived his first child that night. Lesson to be learned, never aid the Western cunt. She isn't worthy of it, men use to defend virgins and nuns, and now they defend whores with tramp-stamps who probably have had 20 abortions by 19. Men, learn your worth.

For those comparing ross to kendrick, kendrick is selling the fuck out. Now he's doing songs on soundtracks. Divergent has him team up with a female hipster and amazing spider man 2 has him pair up with the wack pop singer, alicia keys and the gay neptune, pharrell.

    • SMH

Bashing a rapper for doing movie soundtracks, something many rappers, Ross included, always do. That ain't selling out, that's just business.

    • Anonymous

      How is it hypocritical?

    • SMH

OP, do you even realize how hypocritical your comment is?

Kendrick never sold out at all. Every rapper does songs for money, Ross included. If they didn't, they wouldn't sign record deals.

I never said Amazing spider man 2 is some teen girl shit. That was divergent. Kendrick sells out and does songs for money while rozay carefully considers every offer.

    • Anonymous

By your logic, Ross is also selling out since he did a song for the soundtrack of Django Unchained.

    • Anonymous

Kendrick ain't selling out at all. Doing soundtracks is not selling out. He worked with an indie rock band, not a female hipster. Alicia Keys is not a wack pop singer, she's a dope R&B singer and Pharrell ain't gay.

Don't ever let these Ofays steer you wrong lil Bruh. It's of the upmost importance to incorporate your own imprint and establish your own label and publishing company. They want to keep us blind deaf and dumb so we end up like Tony Yayo, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and the rest of those prostitutes that got pimped by white men because they didn't establish their own shit and get booted once they can no longer pay their pimpdaddy. Sales don't mean much when you split that shit 10 ways to the highways but once you establish your own label/imprint you are entitled to a share of the royalties but...... Tony Yayo never established his own imprint/label so when he dropped his album they split that shit like a pie with Universal/Interscope/Aftermath/Shady/GUNit so the nigga Yayo sold over a million albums for $10 and all he got was a million in his bank account and a BMW. Yayo budget might have only been 1-million but the label can recoup that off of hot singles selling for 99-cents and whatever publishing percentage they may be getting off you so you might generate 12 million and only see 500,000. Once you incorporate your own imprint you not only get a percentage of all albums sold but you can seek a distribution deal from outside sources so that if your parent label goes defunct you can still distribute your product if your contract is up or you are a free agent.

    • Anonymous

That's no excuse. Their labels are gonna fail anyways.

"I consider Kendrick, JCole and Ross as rappers but Kendrick and Cole are more mainstream and appeal to a broader audience. GKMC had Anna Wise and JMSN on it Born Sinner had Amber Coffman and Cults on it Mastermind had Keith Sweat and Sizzla on it If you throw pop features on your album then you have a better chance of doing pop numbers but you dilute your music and lose your core fans and end up like these rappers that cant drop an album." HAD TO BRING THIS TO THE TOP TO SHOW HOW MUCH OF A BITCH THIS NIGGAS IS! None of those artists make pop music first of all, none have had any real commercial success. Jay-Z is a pop feature, Lil Wayne is a pop feature, Big Sean is a pop feature. French Montana is a pop feature. Kanye West is a pop feature. Those are the artists you will hear if you turn on your radio, not Annie Wise, Dirty Projectors or Cults...

Damn I aint even gonna read that essay BruthaDee wrote about white people and hipsters I assume LMAO. Get a life mane. 95% of the people who bought K.Dot and Cole's albums never heard of those people or even knew they were on the albums! I know I didn't until you pointed it out in a jealous rage about them outselling Rick Ross!

    • Sham

those are good points about the marketing, but annawise is a lead singer of an indie rock band that kendrick said he had started listening to and liked her sound, so he put her on the album. makes sense since he copies her electric style inflections on Bitch Dont Kill My Vibe. and you can call K dot And J Cole mainstream, but only because their albums were extremely good that they rose to rap headlines. Rick Ross on the other hand...

Nobody believe those conspiracy theories full of lies. You're just talking out your ass while bashing white folks. I'm not white and I'm not a 50 fan. PS, K-Dot and Kendrick are the same person.

    • Anonymous

White boy sound naive as fuck like he never took a marketing class silly bitch can't understand why Atlantic records might ask T.I. to put a white bitch on a HipHop album...delusion. The guppie calls it a conspiracy theory but everybody that's ever been anywhere near a Major record label will call it cross-promotion and demographic targeting. Sometimes I use the word "pop" becomes its a shortened version of "Popular", and Popular music is predominately white because white people are the predominate consumers in American society by over 80% and the music they consume in mass is considered POP music, Popular music, just look at the charts that Billboard shares for a better understanding if that wasn't clear enough. So if 85% of the consumers who purchase rap CDs are white consumers then wouldn't it be within the best intest of the record labels to generate interest from white consumers? White girls in videos, white girls on album covers and white girls on the features? Thats simply smart marketing and the reason they add token Blacks to white movies or white TV shows. Marketing 101. How naive when the 50-Troll thinks its a conspiracy when I point out the FACT that both KDot and Kendrick have white bitches on their albums on sophomore projects while Scarface and Nas have 10 album catalogs without a single white human being on their albums outside of an Amy Winehouse sample so call that shit a conspiracy or all that shit like I see it and say they never needed to.

    • Anonymous

lol, when was Keith Sweat white?

    • Anonymous

Do you realize how retarded your conspiracy theory bullshit sounds? What makes "white music?" Music has no color. The only people who have heard of these people are the indie, college music crowd. No one in the industry knows about them and no one puts them in their albums to appeal to white people. They're not even noticeable.

    • Anonymous

I don't listen to white music so I don't know those names those singers are known in the white community not mine, they are those whiteBread Hippie singers that the A&Rs want you to put on your project to add an "eclectic" element so white critics and white people can see themselves in the music and be more apt to support it.

Solid shit lol Kendrick went platinum while his boy is about to go wood. That throws a monkey wrench in TDE's plans and puts that much more pressure on Kenbore's next album which ironically might be 100% instrumental.

    • Brother De

The object of every rapper is too get fucking rich and in position to provide opportunities to your people so handle your business young brothers, I got white bitches signaturing my words with "BruthaDee" and I'm not even related to them and that ain't my name but that's the effect the words convey. If you sell 600K with a white bitch on your album like JCole then we Won my Nigga and if Kendrick sell a million with a white bitch on his album then we won my nigga and of Ross sell 500K without a white bitch on his album then we won my nigga because no matter what we gettin to this money Nd these peons are paying for these beats and rhymes. Open up these revenue streams and make the Peckawoods mad at the move, one Peckawoods got heated when I talked about DJs and Videographers because now we got minority owned businesses like Maybach Films with them Latino boys cranking out them visuals and getting that bread without our vision being compromised by them outsiders. Let's get it. When the Peckawood says "Oh my god dude why would they put an unknown indie white gal on a HipHop album instead of a well known negro gal", just laugh and say it's because us Black rap fans buy the majority of albums and when we see Indie white chicks featured on a HipHop album we feel compelled to purchase it because we can relate to that demographic. Let's get this money they still sleep on the game, break they ass like glass every single one of these guppies and then let's pop some bottles.

"Shit, I would put a white bitch on my album quick fast and in a hurry especially if they were those indie/hippy white bitches that the Hipsters love so much, white people want to feel like they are a part of the music and can "relate" so I would manipulate their asses with plenty of white faces and plenty of white samples on my shit.....laugh all the way to the bank after they buy your shit. " The point is them white bitches ain't very well known at all and contributed nothing or very little to the success of those albums. So stop trying to download play Kendrick and Cole's success you sound like a fucking racist crab which we all know you are!

I give Anna Wise a major salute she not only got a feature credit on GKMC but she did background on 5 of the songs adding that special ingredient of sound that they wanted consumers to "feel". Shit, I would put a white bitch on my album quick fast and in a hurry especially if they were those indie/hippy white bitches that the Hipsters love so much, white people want to feel like they are a part of the music and can "relate" so I would manipulate their asses with plenty of white faces and plenty of white samples on my shit.....laugh all the way to the bank after they buy your shit. Do you. Drop the music you want for the people that you want. Im glad all three of those Black men are getting money and I hope Kendrick and Cole can get in position to build their empires so they can give employment opportunities to our producers, DJs, videographers, hypemen, eingenieers, rappers, singers and other aspiring music industry professionals.

I've honestly never heard Anna Wise, Cults or Amber Coffman on the radio unless I tune into a college rock station but I hear Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Big Sean, Kanye West, French Montana almost every single day.

    • Anonymous

he thinks being a white indie musician makes you a pop feature when none of those artists even have 1 gold album... meanwhile Lil Wayne and Kanye are not pop features? CMON SON

    • Anonymous

Keith Sweat isn't even featured on Mastermind.

    • Anonymous

he caled Amber Coffman, Anna Wise (who doesn't have a wiki page) and Cult's pop features!!! Meanwhile Ross had LIL WAYNE, KANYE WEST, BIG SEAN, MEEK MILL, JAY FUCKING Z, who are all a thousand times MORE POPULAR!! No one went out and bought Kendrick's album because "Anna Wise" sang some back up vocals and most J Cole fans don't know who Cults is.

    • Anonymous

No one even knows who Anna Wise, JSMN, Amber Coffman, and Cults are. GKMC had Jay Rock, Pharrell, MC Eiht, Dr Dre, and Mary J Blige on it. Born Sinner has Miguel, TLC, Kendrick Lamar, James Fauntleroy, 50 Cent, and Bas on it. Mastermind had Jay-Z, Jeezy, The Weeknd, Kanye West, Big Sean, Meek Mill, Lil Wayne, French Montana, Diddy, Sizzla, Mavado on it. Neither GKMC or Born Sinner had pop features. Also, they're more introspective and talk about life unlike Mastermind which is just over-exaggerated drug-lord fantasies.

    • Anonymous

NIGGA GIVE IT UP WITH THAT BS. THEY PUT OUT BETTER RAP ALBUMS WITH OUT WITHOUT SOME UNKNOWN WHITE GIRLS SINGING BACK UP THAT NO ONE EVER HEARD OF. YOU BEEN BRINGING THAT SHIT UP FOR MONTHS.

    • Anonymous

I consider Kendrick, JCole and Ross as rappers but Kendrick and Cole are more mainstream and appeal to a broader audience. GKMC had Anna Wise and JMSN on it Born Sinner had Amber Coffman and Cults on it Mastermind had Keith Sweat and Sizzla on it If you throw pop features on your album then you have a better chance of doing pop numbers but you dilute your music and lose your core fans and end up like these rappers that cant drop an album.

Impressive numbers from Rozay he moved nearly the same amount first-week when he dropped Port of Miami about 10 years ago. Loyal fan base and another #1 album to bring the total to 5 which is the most of any rapper from 2006-2014....not bad my friend the hustle continues.

The thing is that "biggest hit in the world" already sold over a million copies so why would they buy the album if they only know the 1 song so far? only good thing i heard about Mastermind is his choice of beats and features. he gets outshined on all his songs. I was thinking the other day he should just fall back and put out compilation albums of dope rappers over the beats he picks like DJ Khaled.

    • g-sus

Yup. Ross been making the same album for the last 8 years. The biggest topic of all his albums is always his beat selection and big features. Nothing he says on the mic is worth discussing.

"Ross puts effort and creativity in his music." I find it to be the opposite. Ross is not creative at all. He's talking the same junk subject matter on every single album. Every song mentions what car he's driving, bitch he's f#%king and how many kilos he's pushing. Then there's the lack of effort. He rarely ever does his own hooks...see Mastermind. Plus every album he is is carried by at least a dozen big features. That's lazy to me.
