ScHoolboy Q "Oxymoron" First Week Sales Projections

ScHoolboy Q is expected to land in the #1 spot on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart.

ScHoolboy Q is expected to land in the #1 spot on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart, according to Billboard. Oxymoron, ScHoolboy's major label debut album may sell between 150,000 and 160,000 copies by the end of the tracking week, the report says. Official numbers are set to be announced March 5.

Oxymoron is not ScHoolboy Q's first project to enter the chart, but it is expected to be the rapper's highest charting effort to date. 2011's Setbacks peaked at #100 and has sold 17,000 units, as per SoundScan. The rapper's 2012 project, Habits & Contradictions, peaked at #111 and has sold 48,000 copies, according to SoundScan. Habits & Contradictions also earned a 4 out of 5 rating on HipHopDX

Oxymoron is the second album released by Top Dawg Entertainment/Interscope Records. The first from this partnership was Kendrick Lamar's major label debut, 2013's good kid, m.A.A.d. city. Lamar's album, which earned a 4.5 out of 5 rating on HipHopDX, has sold 1.2 million copies, according to SoundScan. The project also earned the Compton, California rapper several Grammy nominations

Oxymoron earned a 3.5 out of 5 rating in its HipHopDX review. "Ultimately the good moments are on par with what will be considered 2014’s high-water marks, and if held they weren’t held to the high standards of Setbacksand Habits & Contradictions, Q’s low points would be acceptable from another rapper," the review says. "Given TDE’s ever-increasing appeal, Oxymoron isn’t quite an elite offering, but it meets the difficult task of attracting casual fans without straying too far from the formula that attracted ScHoolboy Q’s core audience."

Recently, Q spoke about this album and his past releases

“Honestly, this album—if you look at all my albums, even the titles, SetbacksHabits & Contradictions,Oxymoron, they play off each other’s meaning,” ScHoolboy Q said in an interview with NPR. “You get what I’m saying? If you look at the covers. They all black and gray. Like all my albums is all—if I picture a color in my head of my albums, I would picture black and gray. For example, Kendrick last album. I would call that purple. Purple and like yellow almost. You know what I’m saying? But all my albums I feel like they always dark. It has that eerie little feel to it. But with this album—'cause Habits & Contradictions is like the prequel toSetbacks. Like I had all these titles already in my head. Like before I even dropped them. Setbacks I knew that was gonna be the first. I knew Habits & Contradictions. I knew Oxymoron. I got two more albums that I already have the title to and I know how I’mma play the theme.”

Very happy for TDE as a whole and wish them much success BUT.. I'm not paying for that album. Q has really regressed lyrically; yeah he was never a great lyricist but now it's just swag, weed, and bunch of "yawk yawks". Too much hype, not enough substance.

man its good to see that he'll sell well considering he got great features on there, especially suga free, that'll give him more deserved attention as well.

"I guess we should believe you since you got a crystal ball" He wasn't even on the brink of blowing up back then.

  • Champagne Papi Life

Drake's album is at least 4 times better than Q's therefore it's only right that Drake sold more than 4 times as much as Q opening week.

    • Anonymous

You can't even back up that lie. Schoolboy's roots are not fake. He was a poor kid growing up in South Central LA and was a part of the Crips. You're just describing Rick Ross.

    • Anonymous

Q's roots were fake though. He was never a gangster, he was a rich kid living a nice life and wanted to pretend to be a gangster. TDE signed him.

    • Anonymous

Q's staying to his roots, too, and he gets personal.

    • Anonymous

What's wrong with pop rap? It's more personal in lyrics than gangster rap. Q is just acting like a gangster while drake stays true to his roots.

    • Anonymous

No, it ain't. Besides, Drake is a pop rap artist while Schoolboy is gangster rap, so of course Drake will sell more.

  • Drastik Alkoholik

wow am suprised by the numbers, which are quiet high, dude can def go gold and maybe plat if the singles and promo are done right, funny how he doing Montanas album sales in one week lol

  • Ricky Rozay

Ross has paved his way in the rap game you know your doin something right when people start hating on you and you still keep putting up good numbers and drop number one albums and he keeps getting better with every album i dont think anyone can deny that and he has done something big or pac hasent done and thats take his own label to the top of the game mmg is the biggest label in the game right now and he has also already made more money than big or pac made when they were alive and that is just facts! Bawse!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

"Is this a serious question?" If Big L were still alive today he'd be more of a chart hermit than OC. His beats were always suspect. Typical NY cat obsessed with wordplay with limited mainstream appeal.

    • Anonymous

Okay, I guess we should believe you since you got a crystal ball in your room that shows you what a certain rapper's career would've been if they were still alive. FOH! Suspect beats? The beats on LIfestylez suited L's style perfectly. Dark, street lyricism equals dark, grimy beats. What were you expecting, happy sounding beats? And he about to make a deal with Hov, so he might've gotten some mainstream appeal. But unfortunately, his death didn't make it happen.

The artists they hate can sell a million and they will still try to find ways to call it a bomb. Meanwhile they say low totals like French are good and start defending it. Let q earn his spotlight.

  • durkendi

Oh my gosh, you guys are idiots. 150k-160k first week is insane. Habits and contradictions sold well considering it was only iTunes. Section 80 sold 100k up till now which is impressive iTunes only. Big Sean, Bob, kid ink, wale, meek mill even Chris Brown all these artists had hits yet their albums sold less first week than this or around the same amount e.g. wale, Chris Brown and meek mill. You are all just taking credit away from him. considering q is still semi underground you cannot expect him to do drake, eminem, or Rick Ross numbers.

  • Anonymous

Ross's third album sold 158k first week. Q's third album is projected for 150-160k. Nice argument. Q is pop rap though so he should be selling more. It should have done at least 300k. Drake even did 650k and hes dope. Q is bombing. Rick Ross is hip-hop rap and they don't tend to do as much

    • Anonymous

Keep making up bullshit. It doesn't change the fact that Ross is not and was not a gangster and those were official singles.

    • Anonymous

What evidence shows that ross never was a gangster? Also, they were announced as official singles, released as promo singles, a change in strategy.

    • Anonymous

Doesn't mean he was, either, and all the evidence say he's not a gangster. Also: "On October 23, 2013, Rick Ross announced that the album's first official single, which will feature Jay-Z, will be released in early November 2013. The following day, Ross revealed that the song is titled "The Devil Is a Lie". He explained that song saying, "Were pushing the envelope once again and its just one of those records I cant wait to hit the streets. We went in another direction but its just one of those records thats gonna speak for itself and everybodys gonna have their opinion of it, but its most definitely what the streets need." On December 19, 2013, "The Devil Is a Lie" featuring Jay-Z was released for digital download. It was sent to urban contemporary radio in the United States on January 21, 2014. On January 24, 2014, it was announced that the next single would be titled, "War Ready" and would feature Young Jeezy." They're official singles, period. No ifs, ands, or buts.

    • Anonymous

And just because all of that happened doesn't mean he wasn't a gangster. There are some who get away with everything. And they were not official singles. If they were, they would have charted a lot better.

    • Anonymous

He's from a nice neighborhood, went to college to study criminal law, became a CO, lived with his mama, and has no criminal record outside of a weed charge. He ain't a gangster, stop believing everything he says on records and interviews. Those weren't promo singles, they're official singles, stop making excuses for your hero.

    • Anonymous

Why, because ross was a co? Doesnt mean he wasn't a gangster. Find me proof that he wasn't a gangster. They were promo singles retard. Kill yourself.

    • Anonymous

No, he released official singles, the one with Jay Z and the one with Jeezy. Ross is not a real gangster, only a retard believes that. Why don't you hop off Ross dick and realize he sucks?

    • Anonymous

Go choke on a dick fag. Ross only released promo singles. No games isnt even on the album. Ross is a real gangster. Hop off qs dick fag and realize hes wack.

    • Anonymous

Ross has not hits form his albums, either. They ain't promos, stop using that excuse. Q's official singles did better than Ross' official singles, which didn't even chart. You got it backwards, Ross is fake while Q is real. Ross is only a gangster in his delusional mind.

    • Anonymous

That's the jhiliarious thing. Q has NO HITS from his album. Ross hasn't put out any official singles. Just promo ones. Q's put out official singles that bombed and didn't even make it to 80 on the billboard charts. Also, Q is fake and Ross is real. He may have been a co but he became gangster later.

    • Anonymous

There's nothing pop about Q's album. It's impossible for Q to do 300K 1st week since he has no radio songs and he doesn't make pop rap. It's gangster rap just like Rick Ross, only difference is that Q ain't talking about moving fictional kilos of coke.

teeth-boy acting like Quote-Man today while Quote-Man is here lol

Quite impressive sales especially considering he had no hits, lol at TDE saying he needs to sell more than GKMC first week to show growth though. I bet second week sales will be horrid because of all the time this album was available for preorder and how long it's been talked about, but those first week sales are good enough to carry the album.

  • Master P

I use to do these numbers from the trunk of my car

  • Anonymous

Haters love sales talk so they can brag about an artist they hate who drops what they call a flop. It's not that simple, a flop is a flop only when you dont recoup your budget. Now if your album is in the Top 20 for Rap sales During a calendar year then it's hard for me to call it a flop. Frenchie did 151K units which puts him at #18 for 2013, right behind Pusha T and ahead of Big Sean, the features on Frenchies album don't mean shit because features don't sell albums if they did then you would see more compilations like what Khaled does. French didnt have any high priced videos so he most likely recouped his budget and if he didn't he is still signed to the richest man in rap who wipes his behind with 50s.

    • Anonymous

Dude, you're wrong about everything. French flopped hard. All of those big features, videos, buzz, etc. and his shit barely sold 150K.

  • Anonymous

Anybody who can release their first major label album in the 150-160k range should be congratulated. His music sounds horrible to me, but TDE is generating buzz, something you aren't seeing from many camps these days.

  • RC

150K the first week is a solid figure, plus they guy is going on a 70+ date tour cross country & overseas to promote the album he ain't going hungry he's earning his keep. Plus TDE has pretty loyal fanbase that wont jump ship to the next big trend unlike the 'fans' of alotta other emcees that have been named dropped on these boards.

  • JRich

Lol just stop with this flop bullshit. TDE and Q probably knew a ballpark range of what they were gonna sell first week a few months ago, it's not like they were hoping for a million pre-orders. Use some common fucking sense and a little math and it's pretty clear that this isn't a flop

  • Anonymous

What made Big L so special?

  • EvenOdd

A lot of trolls in these comments. 150k for Q is a solid effort. I see people comparing him to Drake and the only logical explanation is that they just don't understand the culture. Drake and Q are making music for totally different demographics within Rap/hiphop. I personally prefer Drake to Schoolboy Q, but opinions are subjective. Q's content isn't very relatable to me. That being said, he still makes quality music for his fans and I respect his movement and hustle.

"Do you think any of these rappers would be releasing music if it wasn't for sales? It's a blessing and a curse but absolutely necessary." Have you ever heard of a free Mixtape? This is 2014 where rappers are touring off of their free Mixtapes, getting paid for guest verses and getting endorsement money without a single album being sold. A rapper makes pennies off actual sales which is why so many go bankrupt and have tax issues despite selling millions.

because this is CLEARLY the guy who finds fault with anybody who supports what he doesn't like. the internet revolves around these guys. if Q had put his shit out free, he woulda came with "he can't even get an album out!" Prolly on the toilet looking up 50s old home address to hate on the fact he lived in QUEENS so that makes him one. mixtapes artists that tour in theatres will never be as known or as prestigious as those with solid albums under their belts. there is no mixtape of the year category at the grammys. open your mind up and listen to what i'm trying to explain to you. just ignorance. how you gonna tell the man to sell himself short to appease you? i don't even fuck with q like that, you're just the 3rd worst type of 12 year old.

"What do you think cost more to make? Big name features like Drake and Wayne don't come cheap..A lot more people get a cut of that platinum single besides French and his label." French is signed to diddy and ross. MMG features and Bad Boy features are already free. Since Ross is friends with birdman, the ymcmb features come at a low cost of maybe a thousand for a ymcmb artist. The rest of the artists fees also came in low due to diddy. Q had to pay for most of the features except for tde.

    • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

Most of those guest verses are exchange, give one get one if its kept in the family with crews that are cool. French has so many connections and is so loved in the game that he wouldnt have to charge Wayne 100K for a verse or charge Ross 75k a verse, its family.

********************BREAKING NEWS*********************** Curtis Jackson WILL finally releasing the 'Black Magic' album on March 4th. If you pre-order it you would get 2 signed copies 'Street King Immortal' for free. Curtis was going to drop the album as a surprise like Beyonce but we decided to let yall know in advance. Then Animal Ambition coming out June 4th. Retail price $4. As Head of Accounting for Universal Records (also YMCMB). I can say that the retail price has been dropped low because Curtis doesn't have to pay Eminem, Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine from every album. So yall go out to cop the albums when they get out.

I think the worst thing that ever happened to music is SALES. Its puke worthy watching music nerds argue over sales like they have an actual monetary investment in the CD outside of their purchase half the debates you see on here are about who "flopped", who went platinum or who will sell more than so and so. Rarely do you see people give detailed insight and info on the actual music itself but I guess this is the TMZ/Gossip era. All sales aside the album was average.

  • N3MBERZ

Drake's EP sold 70,000 copies in it's first week, his first album moved 445,000 units, his second album sold 630,000 and NWTS pushed 655,000 pieces first week. This is Q's third album and he moving 160,000, so I'm not too impressed.

I agree, but Q didn't have the hype and expectation that Drake had. He's basically following Kendrick, so nobody expected him to match him in sales.

French Montana only did 56k first week under MMG/Bad Boy with a platinum single and the entire industry featured on his album!

    • Just copped that FRENCHMO!

really though. learn how to do math before you make calculations of any kind from this day forward. let's go to 3rd grade when i learn my times tables. 1 million copies x $1.29 = 1.29 million dollars split between interscope (rapists), bad boy (rapists), 4 writers other than FM and 2 producers (let's be "realisticly," and say everyone was smart and wanted their percentage, not the pennies he offered them up front). He probably made the least amount of money out of everybody involved in that song. Ross got paid more for that song just for being French and Diddy's boy. Q is only signed to one rapist (Jimmy Io) has a much wider fanbase than French. and out-generated FM in cashflow. Let's go with 140k first week. 140k x $12.99 = 1,818,600 Let's say he gets 1.30 off each album (kendrick - free, rock - free; needs the exposure, chainz and MWMI - flat fee, etc. 10% is the lowest typical end, 140k is lowest end in this case) 1.30 * 140k = $182k first week alone. Forget about generating money, Q has that easy. Add the singles in which did at least 100k each obviously and Q's first week looks better than French career thus far. Thank you for allowing me to quench your thirst for logic andwhat is it trolls eat again? hmmmmmmmmm

I'm a big fan of everyone in Black Hippy, but I'm really not feeling this album. It might be because it took so long to release that it could never match the hype, but it's just not great. The beats on just about every track are awful. Oh well, bring on Ab-Soul...

I disagree that he's only good for a feature here and there, because that almost puts him in the same zone as that dickhead 2chainz (how the fuck did he make it on this album by the way???). Hid independent albums and mixtapes have been great, but this one just didn't do it for me.

Q is good for a song or feature here and there but I never really expected much from a full album oh his work.

You stole my opinion, but anyway.. +1.

You sound like a real fan and not a gutless Dickrider who forces the, selves ro like some shit just because you like the crew or the label or the consign. oxymoron was a disappointment but Q has never really been a superior MC or the type of MC to put together consistent hot songs but everybody was hyped after the classic GKMC so they expected more.

  • Not on Kendrick level

150 1st week? thanks to Kendrick he sold that much, because people thought dude was going to release a classic like GKMC, BUT AS WE NO NOW, that aint happen, lol, Mastermind intrumentals alone is better than oxymoron. Only dope songs on oxy are,the one song with that suga free dude, man of the year(cause of the beat),collard greens, studio, hell of a night is aight, that song wit tyler and kurupt alright, and that's about it, the album was all over the place.

      what is Ho Hum

    • Anonymous

Cosign the OP except for Collard Greens. The concept of the album was sloppy and vauge and the lyrics were average, the features were Ho Hum and the beats were just not layered enough but I really liked Studio, man of year, and the Suga Free joint.

the album leaked and has been available to stream for free all week. no one is being forced to buy something they didnt want to or because they expected another GKMC.. "Mastermind intrumentals alone is better than oxymoron" so far the only good thing i heard anyone say about Mastermind is the beats...

The album is beyond trash. The only good song on it is the one alchemist produced. But I guess garbage like this is what younger hiphop fans call "classic" these days.

    • Anonymous

no1 is calling this a classic. lol

" I aint taking nobody seriously who was introduced to rap after hearing "I Wish I was a Little Bit Taller". Sorry bro" Damn nigga, I'm sorry I was born in 1996 and I'm not a seasoned hip-hop historian like yourself. I didn't realize I had to be 40 years old to have an opinion about a hip-hop album.

DollyParton just released a album Go listen to that and get out of Hip Hop. There was a time when Tribe and Wu Tang dropped on the same day and nobody called the other album "wack". What does Hip Hop have to do? Cure Cancer? Explain ObamaCare? fight for equal rights? These Hip Hop fans on the internet had all the intentions in the world to dislike a record before they hear it. So your opinion shouldn't matter. Matter of fact. What you know about Hip Ho. I aint taking nobody seriously who was introduced to rap after hearing "I Wish I was a Little Bit Taller". Sorry bro

Enjoy what? The beats and lyrics are wack. Everything about this album is obnoxious and terrible.

    • Anonymous

It definitely has more than 1 good song. Cmon, you must have really high expecations, just enjoy the music.

Rick Ross should be able to do 250k min if Q is doing 150k. Remember J Cole sold 297k first week so anything is possible.
