Talib Kweli & 9th Wonder Hope Collaborative Album Is Conscious Equivalent To Dr. Dre's "The Chronic"

Talib Kweli says there has not been a "thematically positive album that has struck a chord like 'The Chronic.'"

Talib Kweli and 9th Wonder are set to release a collaborative album, a project that Kweli recently compared to Dr. Dre's The Chronic album.

"The idea is that you have an album like The Chronic," Kweli says in an interview with San Francisco radio station 106 KMEL. "The Chronic is a beautiful, powerful, excellent piece of recording that everybody likes...You can't front on The Chronic. There hasn’t been a conscious or...thematically uplifting...album that is a compilation that has struck a chord like The Chronic and that’s what we are trying to create."

Kweli says that there is no official title for the album, but says a tentative crew name they have is B.A.D., which stands for Build and Destroy Gang.

Recently, Kweli released his most recent album, Gravitas. "It's a stellar piece of art," Kweli says of his solo effort. The project earned a four out of five in its HipHopDX review.

Gravitas was very forgettable. I'm excited to hear this project. Talib does well with soulful production. His album with Madlib was like the conscious equivalent of Jay-z's "The Blueprint".

lmao, these to wouldnt even go wood

  • Anonymous

An album full of Talib is boring and soooo monotone! 9th better switch up his drums on this project

Diamond D's Stunts, Blunts & hip Hop was the East Coast's Chronic.

here hasnt been a conscious or...thematically uplifting...album that is a compilation that has struck a chord like The Chronic and thats what we are trying to create." N!99AS YOU CRAZY! What about M.O.P.'s Firing Squad, First Family, Warriors!!!! FIIIIIIIIIIIIYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

This guy is a fucking embarrassment.

What?!?! This fool is sleeping on his own catalogue! The first Reflection Eternal and the Black Star album are pretty damn solid and still sound good 15 years later. I also agree with the dude below that It Takes A Nation and Midnight Marauders are classics too.

lol this guy just doesn't stop kissing ass for mainstream dollars and to get a few more radio spins so he thinks he can recreate the chronic from his perspective and says there hasn't been an album to make an impact since and that was 92 so there hans't been anything better than that in all the yrs after? ok kweli put down the drugs or stop hanging with lamar odom cause you are wack right now and have been for some years so how about you just stop and wish you still had the same fan base you did when reflection eternal came out retire and spend more time with your seed to keep showing her what lyrics are by playing real hip hop artist and not some manic depressive white boy with anger problems from his dad playing with his booty music.talib kweli = WACK RAPPER

oh and Only built for Cuban links by Raekwon does smash the chronic as a thematically album along with a long list of albums after that

  • Anonymus

That's dope combination, but there's no Chronic ingredients, you need a new fresh face and sound combined with an established producer to make a Chronic-like impact on the industry, 9th wonder is the latter, TK is a vet in the game not exactly a fresh and new face like Snoop, Rage or Kurupt were when the Chronic dropped.

  • Mario toney

I disagree that there has not been a conscious equivalent...I feel Common Be was as good as the chronic in my opinion.Public enemy it Takes a Nation. Brand nubian one for all. Dead Prez first Cd...Tribe called Quest Midnight Marauders. in my opinin chronis was dope but not one of my all time favorites to measure by...hell you could of said Only built for Cuban links Raekwon or Mobb Deep Hell on Earth

This motherfucker just doesnt stop. WTF is a "Conscious equivalent"? Never knew the chronic was un-conscious. Two lamer dudes couldnt come together to make a project. It'll go dust, and only fake hip-hop listeners will check for it.

    • PAhiphopFAN

Are you trolling or are you just that stupid? Chronic was the 90s version of trap music. No conscious on that record.
