50 Cent Says Eminem & Dr. Dre Friendships Led To Release From Shady/Aftermath/Interscope

50 Cent says that his new deal happened only because he's still under the Universal Music system.

50 Cent says that he was able to leave Shady/Aftermath/Interscope with one album remaining on his original recording contract because of his friendships with Eminem and Dr. Dre

“I’m a special case and situation,” 50 Cent says during an interview with FORBES. “It’s also because of the leverage of having the strong relationships with Eminem and Dr. Dre. They don’t want to me to be uncomfortable. They value our friendship to the point that they would never want [to jeopardize] it over that little bit of money.”

Yesterday (February 20), Eminem released a statement regarding 50 Cent.

“I’ve developed a great friendship with 50 over the years, and that’s not going to change,” Eminem said. "We know 50 will have success in his new situation, and we remain supporters of both him and G-Unit.”

50 Cent and G-Unit Records signed an exclusive worldwide distribution and services agreement with Caroline/Capitol/UMG. The arrangement keeps 50 Cent with the Universal conglomerate, another reason why he was able to leave Shady/Aftermath/Interscope.

“If it wasn’t all under the Universal umbrella,” 50 Cent says. “It wouldn’t work.”

50 Cent says his new deal provides him opportunities different from his previous situation.

“It’s freedom to invest in your own ideas,” 50 Cent says. “If ever I had a horse that I was betting on at the track, I’d like to be the horse. Let it be me, goddammit, because I’m going to run as hard as I can.

“It’s having the ability to do that versus, ‘It’s out of the question,’” he added. “Now those options have opened up.”

"But you're the omnipotent one who thinks artists under contract execute their release dates" Half a man. You keep fighting logic to the point where I'm about ready to front the bill for you to get your life dissected by a shrink. You scream single parent home. Tell me I'm wrong. Anyway, 50 Cent has spent his entire career telling the world how he called the shots, and when he repeatedly told outlets when his album was going to drop and it didn't, it made him look bad.

"pre-order on March 18 and get 2 free songs" If I recall Fif was saying for the past four years STK was coming out. Animal Planet was supposed to drop in January. Now it's June? lol While your at it, pre order Detox.

loL, like we didn't know you would be sashaying all thru here like a scorned bitch who got revenge. But you're the omnipotent one who thinks artists under contract execute their release dates. I didn't realize I was talking to Russell Simmons. Come on genius. Tell us how much 50's making up front. Then list the album's budget, and how much he's going to have to sell to see another dime. You aren't mentally equipped to list these facts, so go play while the adults discuss business 101.

50 Cent has the same deal that artists get at Koch/E1. Artists at Koch/E1 have worldwide distribution and their own creative control without being on a major. 50 has a Joe Budden deal right now.

    • Anonymous

the major flaws in your argument are: 1. Koch is not like Universal, so for you to even try to compare the 2 says you don't know what you're talking about. 2. Cash Money Bros has had a P&D with Universal Music Group for years. Y'all have NEVER said that's a "Koch" deal. This is a conversation where your opinion does not matter, be advised.

    • Anonymous

Fiddy does not need Major Label attention, he can do it like Joe Budden does now that they have the same type off deal. Major labels are for artists like Eminem, Jeezy, Kanye, Kendrick, J.Cole, Nas, Wayne, Drake and JayZ. Fiddy has a new deal now thats like the ones that Camron, Fat Joe, Styles, and Ja Rule have.

    • Anonymous

OP has no idea what hes talking about i wonder what kind of deal OP has?>

    • Anonymous

That type of deal works well for someone like Budden. He's not going to sell alot anyway, but 50 needs the major label doing it for him, which is fine. Someone with his past sales shouldn't have to downsize. I bet he's getting next to nothing up front.

"how you figure that when he got a major distribution deal?" I realize he's your hero, but this deal is equivalent to a sports franchise paying a former star to basically sit on the bench. It's been what, four years since an album? 50's done. He's got zero leverage and this announcement, ironically made the day Interscope took away his parking space, proves that. He's playing with you hoping you think he's still the man.

    • Anonymous

loL, look at how the PUSSY seeps out of his words Quote-Man wants you oh so desperately to believe his words while he thrashes yours, but ask him to provide proof to back his statement? you'll wait for years! A REAL adult with knowledge doesn't expect a 50 Cent to be what he was in the beginning to know this is creative control, freedom, and said artist already achieved within a corrupt system what many try to, within and without, aka "independently" don't YOU live this "marvelous" life where you're so rich and great that you can IGNORE 50 Cent's press? You on Kendrick's dick now, the consummate hater. Why should we EVER believe YOU? lol

  • Anonymous

"50 got one of them Birdman, Jay-Z deals" Only difference being his album won't be coming out anytime soon.

  • Me

50 might not be relevant right now but I believe what he's going through is going to catapult him into a conscious (MalcolmX) state of mind.. When you get older you mature naturally and when your paradigm shifts that's it.. If that boy was around me I'd have him reading, watching documentaries, learning not just Black History but African History.. 50cent has an American mind only, and that's his problem.. 50 don't know Marcus Garvey (born in 1887) and his philosophies and opinions but once he does learn that this guy who came to America from Jamaica had 6 million members with no internet or cell phones his eyes will open because he's naturally a boss.. So be patient people because we all know that this dude is no dummy at all but when he figures it out he's gonna need security for other reasons.. Get yo hand out of my pocket type security..

50 is one of the last hardcore east coast MCs from that legendary early-mid-nineties draft class. As much as everyone bitches about the moves he makes business-wise and musically, he's one of the only dudes still holdin' down NY, and still makin' dope music by the way. I got respect for 50, he's a unique character in Hip-Hop. He has the rare combination of being hardcore but still having a sense of humor and fun. That's what Hip-Hop is supposed to be.

Gotta give 50 credit he has so much power over his geekbase that they enter discussions about NY HipHop and add nothing of substance but bitching and complaining about the discussion itself. That my friends is why he went from 8 million fans to 500,000 fans in a span of 4 albums.

    • Anonymous

It was a normal HipHop convo untill the 50 Dickrider got emotional.

Dipset hasnt been a factor since they ditched Cam to hang out with 50 Cent.

    • Anonymous

Gotta give 50 credit, he brings out a lot of hate. He got people who hate him clicking on his stories and typing up 10 sentences about why he sucks and who's better. Some of them seem to care more than the fans do which is sad if you think about it.

"JayZ & Diddy are holding NY down on the business tip behaving like Bosses and making Boss moves for the culture." Holding down NY by exploiting Biggies legacy with cheap ass remade BIG songs by a southern artist??? OKAY....

    • Anonymous

The normal people that dislike things simply ignore those things but weird people have to bitch and moan like whores about every little thing they dislike. The mentally disturbed people spend all day long hating on artists they don't like and having endless arguments with their fans about who's better. If you look thru these comments you will see a lot of sad and lonely people like the guy above... 50 must have fucked his girl or exposed his fav rapper.

    • Anonymous

"Dipset are holding it down for NY making that NY music without the overload of Southern influences" THIS GUY CANNOT BE SERIOUS. THERES NO WAY YOU TYPED THAT SHIT WITH A STRAIGHT FACE.

50 is a POP tart. People that want hardcore NY music from the earlymid nineties listen to Styles, Jadakiss, and Sheek. True hardcore NY lyricists who don't sing on hooks or make sugary pop records about Candy shops and Amusement Parks. 50 is NOT holding NY down and he never did, he doesent live in NY and he was never signed to a NY based label or had a signature elite NY producer oversee any of his albums. Dipset are holding it down for NY making that NY music without the overload of Southern influences JayZ & Diddy are holding NY down on the business tip behaving like Bosses and making Boss moves for the culture. The young boys ASAP Mobb are holding NY down with the youth movement. Check out Troy Ave doing his thing and Uncle Murda making noise. Just like Fabolous said it was 50 who made NY so divided and disjointed because instead of bringing NY together he attacked all the NY artists and allowed the South to take over with their united movement.

"He says his deal is structured similarly to Cash Moneys arrangement, which in which Bryan Birdman Williams label doles out a mere 7% of wholesale per album to Universal in exchange for distribution and support."

  • Anonymous

Curtis 50 Cent Jackson spent much of his early life yearning for a record deal with one of the major labels. After a run with Universal-backed Interscope that began in 2003 and saw him sell over 30 million albums, hes spent much of the past few years itching to leave. Yesterday, he got his wish: hes departing the label that launched his career to forge ahead as an independent artist. He has signed a worldwide distribution deal with Caroline/Capitol/UMG for G-Unit Records and his own releases, beginning with Animal Ambition, due out on June 3rd. Its freedom to invest in your own ideas, he told FORBES in his first interview since the news broke. If ever I had a horse that I was betting on at the track, Id like to be the horse. Let it be me, goddammit, because Im going to run as hard as I can. He says his deal is structured similarly to Cash Moneys arrangement, which in which Bryan Birdman Williams label doles out a mere 7% of wholesale per album to Universal in exchange for distribution and support. In conjunction with Eminems Shady Records and Dr. Dres Aftermath label, Interscope will continue to release and market 50s lucrative back catalogue, including his 2003 multiplatinum opus, Get Rich or Die Tryin. 50 Cent is, and always will be, a marquee artist for us, said Steve Berman, Vice Chairman of Interscope/Geffen/A&M, in a press release. We respect his decision to pursue this new venture and the next chapter in his career, and wish him nothing but the best. He will always be a part of our family. The timing of 50s split with Interscope comes as a bit of a surprise, given that he still owed the label another album. Artists rarely get out of their deals early without paying some sort of feefive years ago, Jay Z famously bought back the last album he owed Universal for $5 million (and later sold it for $10 million)but 50 says he didnt have to fork over any cash. Im a special case and situation, he explains. Its also because of the leverage of having the strong relationships with Eminem and Dr. Dre. They dont want to me to be uncomfortable. They value our friendship to the point that they would never want [to jeopardize] it over that little bit of money. Added Eminem, in a statement: Ive developed a great friendship with 50 over the years, and thats not going to change. We know 50 will have success in his new situation, and we remain supporters of both him and G-Unit. Of course, another big reason the split between 50 Cent and Shady/Aftermath/Interscope has been amicable is that all the labels involved have the same parent company (If it wasnt all under the Universal umbrella, it wouldnt work, 50 admits). The move gives 50 greater flexibility to pursue the sort of unusual release tactics employed by some of his peers latelyfor example, Jay Zs agreement to release his last album via a Samsung mobile app in exchange for a guarantee that the company would buy 1 million copies at $5 apiece. It also allows 50 to dictate his own schedule for recording and releasing music videos. The latest example: he was able to offer FORBES the opportunity to debut the video for Funeral below. Its having the ability to do that versus, Its out of the question, he says. Now those options have opened up.

They just shuffled him to their sister staff, when they distribute his album or put it out digitally it will still say Universal. Haha at all the haters that said FIF got dropped, nope he just took a downgrade so he could have more control.

    • reply to this comment

partially true.. in theory, 50 will now have most, if not all, creative control over what he puts out, as Caroline is a distribution company. Yes they're under Capitol, who is under Universal, so yes that makes him not completely independent.
