Ryan Lewis Says Exchange Of Wedding Vows Was Grammy Producer's Idea

Macklemore calls performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards "magic," says he became emotional while performing "Same Love."

Seattle duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today (January 28) to speak on their performance at the Grammy Awards and a handful of other topics. Earlier in the week, the pair, joined by Mary Lambert and pop star Madonna, performed their The Heist record “Same Love” during the 2014 Grammy Awards.

During his appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Macklemore says he became emotional both during rehearsal and as he performed “Same Love” in front of those in attendance at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. During Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance, 33 couples exchanged vows as the duo performed their The Heist record.

“I got emotional during rehearsal. And I got emotional during the performance,” Macklemore said. “During the third verse I started rapping and that’s when the procession of couples started to come in. And everyone stood up at that point. And it just gives me goosebumps thinking about it now…It was magic.”

While speaking with Ellen, Ryan Lewis revealed that the idea of inviting couples to exchange their vows mid-performance was an idea the producer of the show suggested thanks to his daughter, a longtime Macklemore & Ryan Lewis fan.

“It was the producer of the show,” Lewis said. “His daughter has been a fan for a while. And she told him that over the last year a few different times we’ve had proposals on stage that people would email us and be like ‘Hey, is there any way that I can propose on stage?’ So, we’ve done that a few times and thought that that was a cool idea and then it just started building and building and turned into 33 couples.”

In addition to performing “Same Love” at the Grammy Awards, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also won Grammys for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance. Macklemore referred to their numerous wins at the Grammys as both a blessing and a curse during an interview with Hot 97 this week.

“It’s the blessing and the curse, a little bit more the curse,” he said. “First and foremost, Kendrick [Lamar] is a friend of mine. He’s somebody that I love his music and, in my opinion, had the best Rap album of the year. And knowing how the Grammys usually go, I knew that there would be a great chance that we’d win that award and, in essence, rob Kendrick. That’s what happened tonight. It kind of sucks. I think we made a great album. I think that Kendrick made a better Rap album.”

Macklemore also sent a series of text messages to Kendrick Lamar stating that he had “robbed” the Compton emcee of a win. He then went on to congratulate K-Dot on his successes this year.

  • ETK

no fucking shit it was the producer's idea. the only reason why Macklemore got all those four grammys was to milk the 33-wedding thing for all it's worth. I'm surprised that shit didn't close out the show

MACKLEMORE IS PROBABLY THE BIGGEST HOMO IN HIP HOP, EVEN THAT OTHER FAG FRANK OCEAN DIDNT EVEN GO THIS FAR. WHAT ON EARTH ARE WE COMING TO? THIS GAYNESS IS GETTING WORSE AND WORSE EVERY YEAR. SO YOU LIKE FUCKING MEN IN THE ASS? GREAT, JUST DONT TRY TO MAKE ME ACCEPT THAT SHIT BECAUSE I WONT AND NEVER WILL, AND GOOD LUCK ON KEEPING YOUR FAMILY TREE GROWING. HOMOSEXUALITY IS UNNATURAL PERIOD, ITS GENOCIDE.

"IS IT TRUE THAT GAY COUPLES ACTUALLY MARRIED ON STAGE DURING THE PERFORMANCE?" Yes. Queen Latifah also married straight couples, old couples, young couples, couples of all colors and religions. Macklemore's sister also got married to her boyfriend during the performance!

rap fans are mad at this but gave lil wayne and birdman a pass for kissin on the mouth multiple times... tell me whats gayer LOL

    • Harrison

Yes Queen Latifah the hip hop legend... name a song of hers without google. shit heel. She was chosen because she was gay too. Of course they did that so they wouldn't get the backlash, but it was obviously a misfire, Since when was weddings a part of the Grammys? Not really the place for a wedding is it? surrounded by nobody you know, just a bunch of vapid narccisits who want to be on tv. I spose that is perfect for a gay wedding, along with all the satanic rituals haha.

they had Queen Latifah, who happens to be a hip-hop legend and just happens to be gay (i think? did she ever come out?) marry couples that were straight, gay, old and young.....

    • wads

i didnt know down low gayness (at best) was the same as publicly marrying mass homos while you rap about how you thought you were gay.

  • Ddddd

When we allowed rappers who only care about money, and not the art, to blow up (biggie was the first large one to do it) we paved the way for this gayness.

  • wads

now yall know it wasn't just a sudden jump to gayness this shit has been set up for a long time before it was possible for this fucktard faggot to do this to hip hop.

    • Dave

gay people are the most discriminatory. if you arent following their world view they are worse than hitler. especially if they are white and young.

    • wads

the funny thing is homos want you to accept THEM but they don't accept YOU.

    • wasd

look here you brainwashed simpleton. this world doesn't owe you acceptance. do you believe in evolution? natural selection is the most discriminatory force in the world. so when hip hop comes out as the hardest and most discriminatory genre (what other music has diss tracks) we are pissed off at it being watered down.

    • call me li

Homosexuality is wrong. I don't hate any people, certain actions however are not correct. Gayness is one of them.

    • Anonymous

it isn't gayness its acceptance. people like you make me ashamed to like the genre of hip hop. grow up.

  • i love skinny jeans

the new hip hop is gay

  • Anonymous

i think this proves him being white didn't have as much to do with his success as the agenda he and the grammy folks push

    • wads

nigga theres lots of rappers who did gay songs this white bitch is racist as hell. proof that eating pussy makes u retarded male or female.

    • Anonymous

Take Murs for example, he did a gay song as well and no one paid attention to that.

    • Anonymous

Bullshit. If a Black rapper makes a same sex song it would be irrelevant but if a white guy does it he is worthy of a Grammy because he put out gay shit in the most anti-homosexual genre.
