Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 1/12/2014

Beyonce remains in #2 slot while Kid Ink breaks into the Top 3 with "My Own Lane" and Aloe Blacc's "Wake Me Up EP" sees a surge.

This week, Beyonce holds on to the #2 spot on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart. The singer's self-titled release continues to fall behind Frozen's official soundtrack. Meanwhile, Kid Ink has a Top 3 album with My Own Lane, and Aloe Blacc sees an increase in sales to land in the Top 35 with his Wake Me Up EP

Beyonce Remains #2

Beyonce continues her time in the #2 slot this week, still running behind Frozen's official soundtrack. Bey's self-titled release, which has sold 1,510,763 records overall to date, sold 78,881 units this week. Last week, Beyonce sold 130,490 units. This week, beyond selling more than 78,000 units of her new collection, Beyonce's "Gender Is A Myth" essay was also released. "We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality," Beyonce said in a piece published in the 2014 Shriver Report. "It isn’t a reality yet. Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes. But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change. Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters earn more—commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender. Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect...If women received pay equal to their male counterparts, the U.S. economy would produce $447.6 billion in additional income."

Kid Ink's My Own Lane Lands In The Top 3

Kid Ink, who is a Los Angeles native, has released a Top 3 album on this week's chart with My Own Lane. The album, which sold 50,445 units in this, its opening week, was recently reviewed by HipHopDX. My Own Lane earned a 3 out of 5 X rating in the review. "My Own Lane bridges the mainstream appeal of last year with a stylistic presence that could possibly set the tone for 2014," HipHopDX said of the release in a piece published yesterday (January 14). "Its musical influence pretty much stops there. Kid Ink will certainly have more opportunities in the future to prove why his lane is the movement to move with. For now, that lane is going 35 mph, and Ink is comfortably in cruise control."

Aloe Blacc's Wake Me Up EP Surges To Top 35

Aloe Blacc's new EP, Wake Me Up, has landed in the Top 35 on this week's chart. The project, which was released in October, saw a jump in sales this week going from #195 to #32. His Wake Me Up EP, which sold 6,269 units this week, has sold 27,104 units overall. In a recent interview with LA Weekly, Aloe Blacc, who is also one half of Emanon with Exile, spoke about his jump as a solo artist from Stones Throw Records to Interscope. "I started with Stones Throw in 2005 and released a single and an album in 2006. Between 2006 and 2009, I was making a lot of music, turning it in and trying to release my next album, because I signed with them for only two albums. By 2009, the owner of the label [Peanut Butter Wolf] wasn't really interested in anything I was turning in. He thought it sounded too commercial. I guess in a way the label likes things a little bit gritty and underground, and it didn't sound underground enough. At that time I was recording at professional studios. The manager of the label told the owner of the studio, 'Let me take over Aloe's project so we can get something that the label wants.' They sent me to New York to work with a soul music production team, and I ended up recording Good Things with them. When I brought it back to L.A. to play it for the owner of the label, he said, 'No, I don't want to release this music.'

"I thought, 'Well it's been three years since I released anything. I'm an underground independent artist. This is how I pay rent, and until I release something, I'm going to be basically struggling,'" Blacc continued. "It was just really a push and pull between Peanut Butter Wolf and the manager of the label at that time, Eothen Alapatt, or Egon, who has since left Stones Throw. I don't know if they've repaired their relationship, but it was a lot of 'I don't like your idea, so I'm not going to let it happen,' and I was caught in the middle of it. I had to have a heart to heart with Wolf and say, 'This is my livelihood and I've got to release music, and if you won't release anything, at least let me off the label or something.' Eventually he relented and released Good Things and 'I Need a Dollar' [in 2010]. Luckily, we got the attention of the music supervisor of How to Make it in America who wanted to use 'I Need a Dollar' for the theme of the TV show. That gave some traction and movement to the album. Stones Throw never asked to option another album from me. In 2011, I ended up signing with Interscope. In the years prior, Stones Throw never approached me and said, 'We had success with Good Things, would you like to come and record another album with us?' which would have been great. I probably would have, but I think they waited a little too long."

"last one hasnt sold 600k in over 1.5 years" Doesn't matter. Still went gold. The issue is hype and right now Ross doesn't have alot of it.

"so no one was talking about g-unit cash money or grand hustle" I was hater, and like always you fail to come back with anything resembling a point. Labels often sign a gang of people with the intention of only pormoting a select few. The rest are tax write off's. MMG knows what their doing. Clearly you don't.

"Who the fuck is kid ink and how did he sell more albums than Birdman's Rich Gang and DJ Khaled's Suffering From Success?" Are you serious? You really need to get out more and stop using HHDX as your main source of music information, but I doubt you are from the West Coast anyway so maybe you are just ignorant.

Kanye sold less than J Cole but they just certified Yeezus platinum after only selling 633k? Thats weak

    • Less than 700,000 for a major backed by Jay is a flop

J Cole didn't sall no 656,000 copies. Hold up, are you acting like there is a big difference between 613,000 and 656,000 lol. Both numbers won't never reach platinum, so stfu stan lol!

    • Anonymous

Incorrect information dog. J. COLE - Born Sinner : 656,000 So they got 370k Yeezus albums sitting on the shelfs somewhere but Kanye got a plaque meanwhile J Cole sold more first week and total

    • Anonymous

J Cole has sold 613k so get your facts straight. Theyre talking about how many he shipped as for his platinum status. The record stores pay the labels a wholesale price for RIAA reports and sell to the consumer for Soundscan reports.

  • ROZAY

most of these rappers aint REAL niggas. Word, Nas bankrupt never was a drug runner, Lil Wayne aint no blood, Jeezy aint no BMF, 50 a snitch, Game a stripper, 2pac a ballerina, Drake was gay. somebody please verify this for me.. on other websites yeezus has been certified platinum but on this site it says 633 000. are they talkin worldwide sales maybe ??

    • Anonymous

when you ship out a million copies they call it platinum. the truth is there is 370 000+ yeezus albums sittng on the shelf somewhere

    • xxx

Kanye's sales are correct, he is around 633k sold in the US - not sure what his worldwide total is, but I believe it's less than 1,000,000 - it should be close to it, though... He did not make the cut in the United Global Chart 2013 Year-End list: http://www.mediatraffic.de/year-end-albums.htm But in any case, whatever you read was wrong, since there is no 'worldwide' platinum, these are country-to-country certifications :)

    • ETK

Wow MMLP2 is falling off bad.

    • Anonymous

Really? It's been two months since MMLP2 came out and 1.8 million are strong numbers. It'll keep selling past 2 million. Also, Recovery's been out for almost 4 years, let's see how much MMLP2 does in 4 years.

    • Anonymous

I just thought the sales were pretty poor considering Recovery is sitting at 4.5 mill + and I doubt the MMLP2 is going far past 2 mill.

    • 2Gunz78

How you figure it's only been out for about 10 weeks and those numbers are only U.S. sales, Worldwide sales are over $3 million. EM will another 2 million in the U.S. alone in this next year if he drops a video for Bad Guy, Headlights and Legacy. If anyone fell off bad it's Kanye and Jay Z look at there sales Jay barely went platinum in 37 weeks and Kanye didn't even go platinum in even a longer time hell Kendrick out sold them fools and his album dropped in 2012 and Drake even outsold them guys. It's gonna be harder for older artist's to sell records like they used to compared to a new artist but globally EM is still going 5-10x Platinum with having 15 years in the game and will do so for years to come!!

    • Anonymous

      How? It's still selling good.

Hold On and SFTB classics? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!! Those repetitive pieces of shit are not classics. One's a terrible rap song based on a lie and the other's a terribly sung/written pop song. Age doesn't even matter. Eminem will wash away Aubrey without even trying.

    • Johnny Blayze

Drake has hold on we're going home and starting from the bottom as classics. He can't be washed up because he's far younger than eminem.

    • Anonymous

You're kidding, right, Johnny? Eminem is still killing other rappers and making better records. Drake is not fresh or innovative at all, he's the actual tired/recycled one. His album is typical R&B/pop rap crap, nothing special about it. At least Eminem has classics, something Drake doesn't have.

Beyoonce nor Jay Z can beat Eminem's sales. Both of the Caters had to go overboard with so called "new rules" marketing campaign tricks, while Eminem barely even advertised. Good music doesn't need slick new ad campaigns.

I felt like that too. She is my favorite new white artist. I like her. Beyonce is going to reach new heights as a white artist. Suburban moms that cuckold to black males have another ally.

    • Anonymous

Her skin tone was gradually becoming white but has she really declared she is white? I hope so. I really want to buy her album but my parents won't allow it if you know...

    • ^ Link Proof

Everything that you just said means nothing without a link lol

    • Ben Dover

Beyonce did officially declare that she is no longer in appearance African-American. She is still genetically African and Indian but she is white color now. Blue-Ivy is a mixed baby in various ways. She changed her race a while ago. White people feel more comfortable now buying her music just like they do with eminem over black artists. Even in her music, listen to the way she says certain lines. In Drunk In Love, she says "That surfboard" completely in a caucasian vernacular showing she is embracing her new whiteness.

    • ^ Tell the truth next time

Beyonce never said anything about changing her race and Drake never said anything about he is white. Funny how crazy people who are fueled by hate, type such lies without any links with proof.

    • Anonymous

Um, actually Beyonc e very publicly made the switch to white when her album dropped, she is now Caucasian, that's fairly common knowledge at this point as it has been all over every news outlet. She is the 1st artist of that caliber to make a race switch, you are correct that she is married to a black man though. Drake is Jewish & has been white all of his life, unlike most mixed people, he claims white instead of the common fad of choosing to be black. I hope this helps you better understand.

    • Anonymous

this is racism u hating the fact a white person is on a chart "u know that right"

    • Anonymous

Eminem is the Bill Clinton of rap and Justin is Al Gore, so pump your breaks with the hate. Beyonce is black and his married to a black man. Drake has a black father from Memphis and he only dates dark skinned black women. Get your hate straight!!!!!!!!11
