The Top 10 Most Popular Hip Hop Singles The Week Of 12/16/2013

Last week, Beyonce stunned fans and critics alike with the unexpected release of her self-titled fifth album. With accompanying visuals matching each of the album’s tracks (and more), this week’s Top 10 is again topped by the husband-and-wife duo of Jay Z and Beyonce on “Drunk In Love.” Jay scores another hit feature and an appearance at #2 with the awaited release of Rick Ross’ Mastermind single, a follow-up to the Def Jam rappers’ summer smash from Jay’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, “FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt.” Future teams up with Drake and Juicy J on the remix to his single “Shit” to secure a spot in the Top 3.

The rest of the list is rounded out by more Beyonce with both the track and accompanying video to the song, “Mine,” which features Toronto emcee and singer Drake, appearing on the list at #7 and #4 respectively. Kendrick Lamar’s cameo in Dr. Dre’s Beats By Dre commercial lands itself at #5 for yet another week on the list and both versions of Kanye West’s “Bound 2” video reemerge in the Top 10 after last week’s South Park spoof. Songs by Kid Cudi and The Game—featuring a posse of Jadakiss, Styles P, and AR-16—round out DX’s second-to-last Top 10 of 2013.

Beyonce And Jay Z Team Up On “Drunk In Love”

Described by the singer as a “visual album” given the accompanying videos to each song, Beyoncé prominently features a follow-up to the couple’s “Crazy In Love” hit with Jay Z’s appearance on the similarly titled “Drunk In Love.” With Jay Z’s verse as a closing feature, the video, which is directed by Hype Williams and can be streamed below, finds the singer sporting a bikini on the beach and lugging around a beauty pageant trophy from her youth.

Jay’s verse includes clever references to expensive cognac and modern art. “Foreplay in a foyer, fucked up my Warhol / Slid the panties right to the side,” he raps. “Drunk In Love” was produced, alongside Beyonce, by Detail and the relatively unknown artist Boots.

Besides features from husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy, Bey’s latest also features Drake, Frank Ocean, and words from Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche.

Rick Ross Recruits Jay Z On “The Devil Is A Lie”

With one of the biggest hits of the year already attributable to Rick Ross and Jay Z in the form of Hov’s Magna Carta Holy Grail single, Jay pays back the favor with a verse on Ross’ recently released Mastermind single. With a reference to their summer success, Ross kicks off the song with a spoken introduction and tells his label mate, “Jay, I got it, I got it.” With continued mentions of their ultra wealthy lifestyles, the song finds Ross dropping off two verses before handing off the third to Jay. “My money goin’ on the deep end / Talkin’ half a milli for the weekend,” Ross spits in the second verse, “Contract like a nigga play defense / Curtains in the Maybach bitch peek in.” With another third verse mention of cognac-maker D’ussé—Jay also brings up the brand on “Drunk In Love” and even more famously drank the stuff out of his Grammy earlier this year—Jay Z also addresses his often-speculated relationship with the Illuminati on the song. “Devil want these niggas hate they own kind / Gotta be the Illuminati if a nigga shine / Or we can’t be a nigga if a nigga rich / Oh we gotta be the devil that’s some nigga shit,” he raps.

Rick Ross’ upcoming sixth album, tentatively titled Mastermind, is now scheduled for a 2014 release. Of the latest single, Ross told Fuse News about the nature of following a previous hit. “After you make a record as big as ‘FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt,’ it has to be on that level,” he said. “I feel that’s what this record is. It’s a dope record.”

Future Adds Drake And Juicy J To “Shit” Remix

After releasing the original earlier in the month, Future’s Mike WiLL Made-It produced single, “Shit,” gets an assist from Drake and Juicy J on the remix. While the song was popular to start, the addition of Drake’s verse, which seems to possibly address a recent tift with Kendrick Lamar, has helped the song into the Top 3 this week. In his verse, Drake makes several references that hint at the Compton emcee that brought his name up earlier this year on Big Sean’s “Control.” “I hear you talkin’ ‘bout your city like you run there / Then I brought my tour to your city, you my son there,” Drake raps. Later in the verse, Drake addresses his name being brought up by other emcees. “If a nigga say my name he the hot shit / But if I say that nigga name he still the hot shit.”

CEO of TDE, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, addressed Drake’s possible response with a Tweet on the day of release.
