Miles Scott, better known as Batkid, is a five-year-old boy from Tulelake, California who has battled leukemia for more than three years. Now in remission, Batkid recently made a television appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” where he saved Pitbull from The Joker.
Scott’s wish to become Batkid was granted by the Make-a-Wish Foundation earlier this month. More than 13,000 volunteers helped make his dream come true as he helped save “Gotham by the Bay” in San Francisco, California. The city was transformed by volunteers to appear like Gotham and Batkid saved a damsel in distress and the San Francisco Giants’ mascot, arrested The Riddler and Penguin, and received a key to the city by San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee.
During his appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Batkid saved Pitbull from The Joker. Pitbull thanked Batkid for saving him and for allowing him to perform on the show.
Taking on the Batkid persona has been helpful for Miles, says his father, Nick Scott.
“It’s kind of been a way for him to fight through everything he’s been through,” Nick Scott said on the television program.
The Batkid story gained national attention when people started supporting Batkid through social media, including President Barack Obama, who posted a video for Batkid on Vine.
Pitbull has worked with children in the past. In August, Pitbull announced the opening of SLAM (Sports Leadership & Management), his new charter school in Miami, Florida.
“I can speak from the heart when it comes to charter schools for the simple fact is that teachers have changed my life,” Pitbull told The Washington Post. “I had a second grade teacher that taught me that there is a way out and then I had an eleventh grade teacher who taught me to believe in myself and the talent that we didn’t even understand that we had at the time. So, that’s the same thing I want to do with the kids. Sometimes what happens is that education is no longer sexy. It’s no longer cool. I want to tell them or help put together either curriculum or schools where it does entertain them or engage them. One way or another [I want to] just make it fun again to learn. There’s no way that you can tackle any obstacle or any issue around the world if you’re not educated. My mother always told me that the biggest diseases in the world, the most dangerous, [were] ignorance and greed. That’s why we have to educate. That’s why I fight for it. That’s what I feel is the real revolution.”
