Pharrell was named GQ Hitmaker of the Year 2013 by the publication today (November 19).

The rapper-producer’s year included several hits, including Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” a selection that also features T.I.

Pharrell said these songs were important because they allowed people to relax and enjoy themselves.

“Both songs are for people who need a break,” Pharrell says in the GQ profile. “There’s a lot of fucked-up travesty in the world. Sometimes you just need a Hallmark card. Sometimes you just need to shake your ass.”

Pharrell became the twelfth artist in Billboard Hot 100 history to hold the #1 and #2 spots at the same time this year thanks to “Blurred Lines” and”Get Lucky.”

“Blurred Lines” was also a selection at the center of legal discussions between “Blurred Lines” creators and Marvin Gaye’s family

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of “Blurred Lines” makers in a California federal court in August.

“Plaintiffs, who have the utmost respect for and admiration of Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic and their musical legacies, reluctantly file this action in the face of multiple adverse claims from alleged successors in interest to those artists,” the lawsuit states. “Defendants continue to insist that plaintiffs’ massively successful composition, ‘Blurred Lines,’ copies ‘their’ compositions.”

Pharrell was also involved in a legal dispute with will.i.am this year over Pharrell’s company, i am OTHER.
