Trinidad James Says Atlanta Runs New York Rap

Trinidad James mentions Kendrick Lamar and Juelz Santana during his rant about New York City Hip Hop.

During a performance at the Converse Rubber Tracks show in New York City, Atlanta rapper Trinidad James didn’t hesitate in sharing his opinion on the city’s place in today’s Hip Hop. The “All Gold Everything” creator even went on to state that the South runs New York City musically and rappers in the area might as well claim the city of Atlanta as their hometown.

“I remember when New York ran this shit, dog,” said Trinidad. “When Dipset was fuckin turned the fuck up. Oh my God. I gotta wear my bandana on tilt like Juelz. What the fuck happened, dog? What happened? I remember when New York rap was the shit. And us in the South, us bammas, we was like ‘what the fuck’ and we just did our own thing. But now we run y’all musically. That’s crazy. That’s crazy. That’s crazy, my nigga. That’s crazy. I’m not trying to start nothing, but if you want to do something we can do something cause I don’t give a fuck. I looked up to New York music. And now every nigga that’s really poppin’ out of New York, you might as well tell they from Atlanta. ‘He from Atlanta. He from Atlanta. He from Atlanta.’ I’m just putting it out there. Y’all got more bloggers—y’all got niggas interviewing more popular than niggas that’s rapping.”

During his conversation with the audience, who responded with occasional words of approval and disapproval, Trinidad referenced Kendrick Lamar’s “king of New York” mention on “Control” and questioned why the Compton rapper is just now getting props for his music.

The Def Jam signee also touched on his upcoming studio album and revealed that the album is better than most projects out.

“I feel like my album is better than all this bullshit that these niggas is feeding you,” said Trinidad. “It’s bullshit, man. It’s bullshit. If it was some real shit I’d tell you it’s some real shit. But it’s some bull-fuckin-shit. Straight up, man…You can’t tell me, anybody out here that’s a real fuckin Hip Hop fan, can tell me that Kendrick Lamar supposed to be platinum just this year. He been that fuckin good. He been that good. He been that fuckin good, dog. He been that good. But now, the nigga that we been knew now he’s coming and saying shit like he the king of New York. What is that?”

With last year’s release of the Motion Family-directed “All Gold Everything” music video, Trinidad James quickly garnered viral fame thanks to millions of views on YouTube and even enlisted the help of fellow Atlanta rappers 2 Chainz, T.I., and Young Jeezy for a remix to the Don’t Be S.A.F.E. record.

Don’t Be S.A.F.E. serves as Trinidad’s debut mixtape and will be followed by the release of a studio album from the rapper, which is currently slated for release next year.

    1. Hip Hop started in NYC. 2. Rakim is from NYC. 3. Wu Tang are from NYC. 4. Nas is from NYC. I don't know if this kid is speaking strictly on recent sales of ringtones or what, but the Wu tang/Wu fam album collection alone > All of my absolute favorite southern hip hop tracks (there's a lot) on a giant compilation. I mean seriously, who from the south has actual talent (lyrics, delivery, flow, and creativity) like the artists I mentioned? Nobody. Like some southern stuff, but please!

    Enjoy your 15 minutes

  • NY BK all day

I got love for the south str8 up but NYC started this rap/hiphop shit therefore everyone learned about how to do this shit from us and that means everything from dressing to styling to stunting, everything. And I dont even give a fuck about fashion thats one of the reasons the industry is so homo'ed out. Shit I remember when the south itself had distinguishable music, everyone didn't sound the same. Nowadays everyone sound like the next artist, particularly because y'all use the same tracks all day. But overall I mean I still got love for southern rap got love for Trini too. I know what he's saying but also ppl out here as well as the stations don't support the artists at all. You don't have DJ's willing to break a record on mainstream radio anymore. Also, back then you had to work your buzz up through the street to get co-signed before your music would get any spins. Nowadays everything is through the 'net so its taken that element away.

  • southwestATLien

to quote the late great Pimp C... "Dis Aint no hip-hop records...these country rap tunes....and you can separate us from the rest like I told yall the last time" I see all these comments and i remember when Outkast got booed @ the source awards in 94...now we run hip hop with our own style and we dont even call it hip hop...its country rap tunes!!! Now for the dumb fuck that said the south killed hip-hop...we didnt kill it it was already dead...we just remade the mold

  • rap is wack

ATL WAS ALWAYS R&B HIP HOP..IT MADE $$$ NY NIGGAS JUMP ON THE BANDWAGON. HE NEEDS TO DO HIS HOME WORK AN LOOK UP SHY D FROM THE BOOGIE DOWN BX... ATL LEGEND

  • Shoshen

Hip Hop is supposed to be based on creativity; fuck it: not just HH, but MUSIC in general. Back in the days, before Tha Carter 3 (that shit kinda began that all shit even if it started a lil while back), Dre gave the West that particular sonority , the east had DJ Premier n Just Blaze make it sound like "New York, New York"...Timbo was doin it n so Mannie Fresh in the south. I remember the first time I listened to "This Is Why I am Hot", I could have sworn that nigga Mims was from ATL: surprise nigga, he aint. Now, well Jay-Z has a song called FUCKWITHMEYOUKNOWIGOTIT (pseudo Hip Hip King), sounding so...Rosey, Snoop Dogg made "That's Da Homie", Busta Rhymes, legendary MC got signed by YMCM...Every single niggaz on earth sound southish*.That's the reason the last real Hip Hop Classic Song was ONE MIC by NAS. And yeah, the south runs New York that's why Hip Hop is dying. For the dummy who mentioned niqqas rapping in Africa, just remember that it is legitimated.

  • rap is wack

HE STARTS OFF WITH J SANTANA???? YOUNG ASS MOFO (Trini J.) NEEDS TO GO Back an do his hip hop history... IT WAS CATS FROM NEW YORK THAT WENT TO ATL AN PUT ATL ON...

Nobody from NY hates the south... We're just tired of rappers from NY rapping like they're from the south. Everybody should have their own sound. Instead it's nothing but dick riding and hating going on.

As a New Yorker who is directly from the era TJ is talking about--running hip hop, I think TJ is right-on with his statement, I USED TO LOOK UP TO NEW YORK AND WE WAS BAMMAS. Personally, I think its beautiful that the south is doing its thing (Fathers should always congratulate their children's successes)! A lot of former New Yorkers (live in the deep south), and have been influenced by southern culture anyway, just like we've influenced the world with New York hip-hop culture (including the south). Its a cyclical relationship. Man, even people in Africa are rapping now, who cares, its about the talent. In the Motown days most of the major musical talents came from outside of New York! Its about the talent. TJ suffers from sensory overload. He can't see that the birth-place of Hip-Hop is showing the south its acceptance of their talent(The south has been seeking that acceptance for a very long time)/There are a lot of fire southern rappers-- All inspired by NY Hip-Hop culture, That's why NY will always run HIP-HOP!!!

    • NYNY

NY START SUPPORTING NY RAPPERS AND STOP SUPPORTING RAPPERS WHO DON'T SUPPORT YOU!!! IT'S A SIMPLY FORMULA!! ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!! THE SOUTH STOPPED SUPPORTING NY RAPPERS DURING THE EAST WEST BEEF. THEY GAVE THIER SUPPORT TO THE WEST COAST YEARS AGO.BUT WE KEPT THE TOURCH BURNING BECAUSE WE SUPPORTED OURSELVES!!!

    • Anonymous

They got no respect for the city and you're typing a whole story and still dick riding? That's exactly what is wrong with the city!

  • barrydavillain

  • Aceston Foxworthy

What has occured in NYC with rap music (not hip-hop)has more to do with radio conglomerates and dumb it down cookie cutter playlists than the talent of rappers like Trinidad.

  • Anonymous

Trinidad spoke the truth, Maino getting mad cuz he knows it's the truth, the fact he was even able to say all that on stage in NY should tell u where NY is right now, back in the days he would've been dragged off that stage before he could finish that little speech, NYPD would've had to come get that nigga n his entourage, matter of fact he wouldn't even have played himself like that, u go down south whether you're in the club or on the radio u don't hear no NY artists unless they feat. a nigga from down there, but turn on Power 105 or Shit97, all u hear is out of town niggas 24/7, nd this ties in with all LJ was saying but I don't blame white ppl. I blame us, the powers that be totally owns Hip Hop now lock, stock, nd barrel, that's why all those radio stations which are corporately owned have to follow orders like the good workers they are, niggas never learn from our past yo so we're always gonna repeat it, we create nd they take nd turn us into workers, we own nothing b/c we can't stick together, niggas is so used to not having, we can always be bought, Trinidad James spoke the Truth nd that's coming froma NY hiphopper

    • room2roam

100% agree. To NY, just make your music. it will catch on but you gotta stop trying to diss other n1ggs for attention. just let it be about the music
