Jay Z Blasts Critics Of His Barneys Partnership

Jay Z says that he's waiting to get more information regarding the racial profiling allegations leveled against Barneys before he decides whether or not to end his relationship with the company.

Jay Z released a statement today (October 26) saying that he is waiting on facts before deciding how to address his business deal with Barneys, as per Jay Z’s lifeandtimes.com website.

In September, Jay Z revealed a partnership with Barneys titled “A New York Holiday,” which will consist of limited edition pieces by high-end fashion brands and interactive window displays for the holiday season.

This week, the New York Daily News reported two separate incidents in which Barneys committed discrimination against two African American customers. Trayon Christian, 19, and Kayla Phillips, 21, were questioned by New York Police Department officials as suspects of credit card fraud.

After the New York Daily News report, Brooklyn resident Derick Bowers launched a petition requesting Jay Z to end his partnership with Barneys New York. Bowers said he wants Jay Z to cut ties with Barneys because the retailer’s actions show that “they have no connection with the young, black Hip Hop community.”

In an interview with allhiphop.com, Bowers says, “I’m not personally attacking Jay Z. This attack is really at Barneys. What I’m asking from him is to withdraw that partnership to let them know we have that power, and you can’t take that from us.”

Jay Z’s full statement on the matter is as follows:

“This collaboration lives in a place of giving and is about the Foundation. I am not making a dime from this collection; I do not stand to make millions, as falsely reported. I need to make that fact crystal clear. The Shawn Carter Foundation is the beneficiary and the foundation is receiving 25% of all sales from the collaboration, 10% of all sales generated in the store on November 20th and an additional donation from Barneys. This money is going to help individuals facing socio-economic hardships to help further their education at institutions of higher learning. My idea was born out of creativity and charity… not profit.

“I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys. Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately? The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn’t want to make without the full facts. Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn’t hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education. I have been working with my team ever since the situation was brought to my attention to get to the bottom of these incidents and at the same time find a solution that doesn’t harm all those that stand to benefit from this collaboration.

“I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgements, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles? I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change. – Shawn ‘JAY Z’ Carter”

How do you figure? He is not making a dime of this partnership and the proceeds are going to help fund education for low income families

    • adasdas

you a fool fam. It really aint that hard to get a few trustworthy people and get their cheddar together and create a business. There are plenty of black entrepeneurs in the US especially down south in places like Atlanta. Stop making excuses for ignorance and lack of business acumen, how do you think immigrants to the US set businesses up so fast??

Jay Z's biggest hits are: Empire State of Mind(Alicia Keys) Bonnie and Clyde(Beyonce) Run this Town(Rhianna) Niggas in Paris(Kanye) And he's currently trying to ride Timberlake's coattails not mention Umbrella and Crazy In Love were way bigger hits than any of his own songs. 03 Bonnie and Clyde was the only top 5 Hit after nearly 10 years in the game Jay isn't shit compared to someone like Nelly who was far more successful and never resorted to piggybacking!!!!!!!!!!

JAY Z HAS TURNED INTO THE WHITE DEVILS PAWN

  • KV

Jay by far the smartest rapper ever.

  • blame jenkins

    lol....Jay didnt write this

  • Anonymous

"My idea was born out of creativity and charity not profit." not buyin it.... When has Jay-z ever NOT wanted to make some kinda profit off of anything hes done??

  • Sensaye Sixkiller

Jay's response was well written and I expect nothing less, because he's a smart and respectable guy. With that said, Jay-Z has more power and money than any rapper ever, and because of that he has leverage and influence that no other rapper has ever had. I'd like to see him use that leverage and influence to start swaying young people towards NOT blowing their money on material bullshit. If these kids didn't feel like they had to buy a pair of 240.00 sneakers in order to keep up with their idols, they might not sell crack or blow some other kid's brains out for his kicks. When Stephon Marbury came out with the Starbury sneakers that costed 25 bucks, everybody clowned him for that shit when it was an honorable and unprecedented thing he was doing. That's how backwards all this shit is. Mothafuckas puttin' their 6 month old baby in a pair of Jordans, imposing their ignorant ass material desires on their kids. Then that kid grows up and goes to school and makes fun of the other kids who's parents couldn't afford Jordans or weren't willing to risk their lives for a pair of sneakers, or maybe their parents were just smart enough to tell the kid to fuck off when he asked for a pair of 240.00 kicks. The thing is, you rarely see rich people make fun of poor people, but you always see poor people make fun of POORER people, and unfortunately it's largely a black thing.

    • Andre

You're argument is so stupid, Material things? what else is there in the world to work towards if it isnt for House's, cars. shoes, tvs, technology, etc. What do you want? people to live in a box, wearing jesus sandals, living day to day bullshitting. Sure we dont need these things to survive, we dont need Jordans, we dont need iPhones, we dont need any of this shit to survive, but that is what separates us from the rest of the Animal Kingdom, we dont need any of these things you classify as "Material" or "Perishable", but we as Human beings arent here to just survive we are here to thrive & anyone not down with that will die, sort of a darwinistic approach. If you dont like it then hop out of the rat race and go into the forest and throw away all these perishable items and die a slow lonely death. Simple & if you dont like what Jay-Z is doing with his influence how bout you work hard and gain that influence? That's right, because the way the system works is that your the victim of consumerism and you and your people will never thrive as long as Jordans are the priority. You think Drugs dealers go out to Sell drugs and blow each other heads off for some Jordans? Really? if you believe that you are a fuckin' clown, Drug dealers do what they have to do, to make a living. I can afford Jordans on a Minimum wage job, and never had Jordans as a child because my mother couldnt afford them, Im sure people made fun of how I dressed, matter of fact i know they did because when they see me now they tell me I looked like a homeless kid in grade school, but what kept me from giving a shit was my parent (singular cause i was raised by a single mom and a absent alcoholic father), she taught me the wrongs from rights and taught me the value of things & that no matter what there will always be someone better off than you and someone worse off than you. So to worry about what you have is moot, because guess what it could always be worse. the only thing you can worry about is working hard to get what you want out of life. To blame Jay-Z for the problems of people not being able to prioritize their lives is the exact problem with this world. Stop being the fucking victim, You are basically saying one person can affect millions of lives, so I guess if he wants to call himself GOD (HOVA), I think he should be able to, because by your opinion he has that kind of power. The truth is that the real issue is the parents, the upbringing of these children and truthfully there is no saving a child raised in ignorance, no matter how many times you want Jay-Z to preach responsibility it will never reach the people that need it the most, because the people that need it the most are also the one's that are incurable of the disease IGNORANCE. so shut your self-righteous fuck face ass up and jam to some more Immortal Technique thinking that world is out to get you and that everything that hurts you is indirectly societies fault, Like Jesus did take the Burden and stop being a little bitch, accept the possibility that maybe everything that has happened is a direct result of your failures and that you should constantly work towards getting better instead of blaming the things in which are out of your control.

    • Anonymous

See, but that's not on Jay Z's agenda. This is about money. He's not responsible for teaching kids about what matters most in life. If he tried that, he'd get clowned harder than Marbury did. It's all about credibility and as long as there are parents and kids out there easily swayed by the bull these artists/businessmen are peddling, it'll be business as usual. It's just the way of the world, even though one day Jay will see the other side of things and wish he had done alot of things differently.

    • Anonymous

"The thing is, you rarely see rich people make fun of poor people, but you always see poor people make fun of POORER people, and unfortunately it's largely a black thing." ^ lol you don't get outside much. Ever hear a rich person say they don't speak to the help? Ever heard of the label "white trash" or "trailer park trash"? You've never seen Asians treat their poor like garbage. Hindus have a caste system, you stay broke forever. You must don't shop because there's a thing called a "sale", where goods are discounted. And you got Tbrown cosigning that nonsense too.

    • HHH, that's me

He said a) the foundation get 25% off of ALLL sales from the store, and b) they get 10% from ALL the sales in the store, ON THE DATE NOVEMBER 20:TH. Meaning that on that specific day, they get 10% from every single thing the store sells, and aside from that, the foundation gets the average of 25% from all the proceeds, for the entire project period. Learn to fucking read and understand basic percent.

Lol, anyone thinking Barny's NY is racist has obviously never been there. I'm sorry but this is one instance when the race card need not be pulled and you just go on about your days. They think they are special because they were wrongly accused of credit card fraud, and they happen to be black? News flash Its a fucking high end retail store. It happens hundreds of time a year, especially nearing Christmas time, and sorry to burst your bubbles, they could care less what race you are. Any ones card could be red flagged.

black people need to understand and realize that most of these rich black icons that you fools idolize like jay z beyonce and even oboma dont really give a fuck about you black people. They only care about their money and why would jay z stop his partnership just because of a few poor irrelevent butthurt black people that are insignificant.

    • Ghostly

Are you fuckin retarded??? He just stated that the partnership with barneys if for his foundation, which helps poor people. I'm sure there are a lot of blacks benefiting from the organisation. You are one of those fools who knows nothing and makes a lot of assumptions without fact. LOL fuckwit.

    • bewitness

The truth does hurt, and I work and retail and you know who does the most stealing? Young black males. I work in all all black store and when a group of black kids come in we automatically think they are about to steal something...and most of the time we are right. The truth that hurts is that we as a people need to find out why does are youth have nothing better to do than petty crimes? Most people who want Jay-Z to no longer do business with Barny's don't even shop and Barny's . I love how so many black people would rather get pissed at a symptom of a disease than to actually address the disease itself.

jay-z is being smart about this. he's not trying to play the race card too soon without knowing everything. hes not trying to be one of those ignorant niggas that takes every single opportunity to call someone a racist (even when they might be wrong), and for those who take offense to my statements, chances are you're probably one of those ignite ass niggas im talking about.
